Elantra MD (2010-15) :: Nasty Sounding Thump In The Rear
Feb 4, 2013
So I have a 2011 GLS with a little under 36k miles on it. Every time I drive over anything from a small to a big bump, there is a nasty sounding thump in the left rear of the car. I do have a sub back there, but it weights well over 90lbs so I can't think its that moving around. I do need new tires soon so i do not know if that is a factor at all.

I have a '74 Dodge B-100 van, 318 V-8, with a 3-speed A727 TorqueFlite tranmission (which was totally rebuilt about 20,000 miles ago). Overall, this old baby that we call "Blue Thunder" is in almost pristine condition. It starts well, runs great, and over the years has been highly reliable. It's been in the family for almost 38 years and is special to all of us. I've maintained it extremely well from day one.
Here is the big problem.....under very light acceleration at the 2-3 upshift, it makes a loud-sounding and aggressive-feeling "clunk" or heavy sounding "thump". Under hard acceleration, or accelerating on an upgrade (hill), it does not make this sound at all and I do not feel or hear it at all. There are no other accompanying symptoms such as whines, roars or vibrations. I recently took it to a reputable (in business for 35 years) transmission shop recently with the above problem description. He checked the fluid and adjusted the kickdown band. This same shop had serviced the transmission a year earlier. He recommended that I let him him take it to a general auto repair shop down down the street for a diagnosis on the "loud clunk" ....as he did not think it was a transmission problem.
I agreed for him to do so since, the shop "down the street" is also known for quality repair work. The written problem description was sent aong with the van. In a week or so, the auto repair shop called and said all they could find was a little wear in the spider gears in the rear differential. I gave them permission, since the differential was already open. to replace anything that looked like it needed to be replaced. It took a while to get the parts, but they replaced the spider gears, both side bearing cups, and 1 of the differential bearing adjusters. Of course the work included new gear oil and gasket for the differential cover. It was an onerous bill, but I didn't complain, thinking that the terrible "clunk" would be gone. I picked up the van and immediately noticed no difference at all. The loud "clunk" was still there under the exact same conditions.
I took it back and asked the owner to ride with me where upon I easily recreated the "clunk" by accelerating very lightly. He said, "Oh, that's in the transmission, because it's only makes the sound when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd gear". I called the transmission shop back and they want nothing to do with it....saying that a noise like that one is practically impossible to pinpoint. He said even if the transmission were rebuilt, he cannot guarantee the noise would not be there. Both shops say the U-joints, yokes, engine mounts, and transmission mount all look OK.

I just purchased my Elantra MD for just 2 years. Yesterday I went uphill (not steep) then decide to change from auto to manual, then I move the stick, it shows I am currently in gear 5 so i downshift to 4. After a few second the was a 'jerking' with 'thump' sound from the bay. My rpm came down slowly, i pushed the pedal but the rpm wont go up. it just glide. Shut down and up the engine changed nothing. When i try put reverse gear, it reversed fast as if i pushed the pedal, but i am not.

So this is the second winter I've had my GX (a 2014 purchased in Nov. 2013).
With radio and other accessories turned off, there is a rattling/grating sound that is quite pronounced at/near idle, especially when cold. Sounds like a rapid PRAPP-PRAPP-PRAPP. This occurs when the vehicle is in Drive, but stopped. Occurs most often at within the first 5 minutes of operation....i.e. leaving the house or office, driving to the end of the street, hearing it at a stoplight or stopsign.
I've posted videos/recordings of it previously, which I have also shown to the dealer. The dealer said they could sort of reproduce, but could not diagnose it. I have tried to crane myself outside of the GX to listen to it, but from outside nothing seems to be amiss.
At first I was worried that it was engine knock/the car eating itself, but if that noise was representative of that, I think the car would be blowing smoke or dead by now. I have not noticed smoke, adverse effect on fuel economy or the noise at speed/under load, as you would expect if the engine were truly knocking. So I'm thinking it may be a fan, some type of underhood accessory, etc. that is the culprit. Sounds almost like a plastic component (fan, pulley, etc.) could be off kilter?? Something that more or less goes away after the engine has fully warmed up and the car has been driven for 10 mins or so.

I've been hearing a quiet 'thump' when shifting. In particular, when first letting up the clutch starting out in 1 but also when shifting between gears when the clutch is fully down such as from 2->3.
I thought perhaps a fluid change was in order since I'm at 110,000 miles. It didn't make any difference. (I used Mobil 1 GL5 which according to independent tests is safe on yellow metals.)
So then I wondered if it's the engine mounts, but I'm not sure what it sounds like when they need to be replaced or if simply shifting between gears while driving as described above would cause a worn one to 'thump'.

Went out to run some errands this morning, and was alarmed to hear a loud, tinny-sounding banging noise from the rear of the car. It would occur on every bump. little or big; every time I braked; every time I started up from a stop; after each shift to a higher gear; and every time I turned a corner.
I was getting really concerned, as I had never heard a noise quite like this on any car, ever before. When I got home, I pulled the floor jack out of the garage, then went to the trunk to get my torque wrench with the wheel bolt socket on it.
When I opened the trunk, this is what I saw: ...

Overall, my wife and I like the car. It feels solid, and so far we have about 950 miles on it. Today though, something weird happened.
I was driving, and we were getting on the freeway after crossing an overpass, so it the on-ramp was one of those sweeping, downhill, 270 degree curves to the right. Nothing out of the ordinary.
So I let off the gas, and I'm taking the turn, and there was this "thump!" noise - almost as though the transmission was shifting. The car shuddered. Then it did it again.
It was disconcerting, almost reminiscent of our wacky dual-clutch transmission issues we had with our 2011 Ford Fiesta. Now granted, its a bit of conjecture since I don't know what could have caused it. I wasn't going quickly enough where any stability control mechanism (ESC) should have kicked in... so I'm not sure what else could have caused it. Undoubtedly I'll be testing it again to see if I can reproduce it, but its got me concerned.

Have a factory touch screen radio (not sure which one it is) no Navi, but its a 2010 Passat, mine sounds like crap, especially when playing though an IPOD. Put the same music on an SD card and it sounded much better. I literally have only had the car less than a week, and am contemplating going and taking out all the speakers and replacing them with aftermarket stuff.

What can I do about my car it's not shifting, it's stuck in high gear and when I go from park to reverse it makes a loud thump. The check engine light came on and the codes are transmission control module it's a 2006 and only has 30,000 miles on it. It's hard to believe it's the brain so we changed the fluid and cleaned the sylinoids but then when I drove it around the block I put it in reverse it didn't make the loud noise and it shifted fine for a minute before I got around the block and almost home it made a loud banging noise and went back to not shifting again. What the problem could be.

O.K. first of all I had an issue with the Odometer pointer being jumpy. Sometimes it wouldn't move. Now I replaced the input sensor at first and did not fix the problem. I replaced the output sensor and fixed it. "BUT", Now, I have a problem with the transmission shifting. I get an engine light while driving and the 2nd gear seems to take its time shifting and when it does it make the left side drive shaft kick in hard and spends my wheel to a screeching effect. Plus a thump on the transmission. I rechecked the sensor for connection and reinstalled. Drove the car still have the same issue?

I have a 2011 Elantra GLS automatic and have experienced rear end hop when hitting bumps, potholes, manhole covers, etc. It is quite disturbing to feel the read end slide sideways especially at highway speeds. Today I noticed similar feeling when I drove on snow covered roads for first time. I took it in to dealer who agreed it was a concern when he drove it, but couldn't find anything out of spec.

I just want a conformation on something.. I had a 2005 Elantra hatchback and when folding down the back seats the bottom part of the seat would first lift up and back so the rest of the seat would fold down nice and flat. I don't see that option with my 2012 Elantra..... That was a nice little feature on my 2005.

So I tried removing my rear deck but was unsuccessful. I removed 4 "screws" when folding the seats then the ones inside the trunk but it didn't come off. Did I miss anything that is holding it down?

So, last week I got my transmission replaced and they also had to replace the CV axle because it was damaged beyond repair when the Transmission self-distructed. They drove it after all the repairs and said it was driving fine, just that it had a belt squeak.
On my way home (30 min drive) about 10 minutes in, still in the city, my brakes start making a grinding noise and sort of a thump thump thump when I brake which sounds like its coming from the passenger side front, it makes me really nervous. It doesn't sound like any brake grindy noise Ive ever heard before and it wasn't making any brake noises before it broke down. (On a side note: it also made a weird noise maybe the first 3 times I drove it after getting it back and I turned the wheel hard to back out of a parking space, that used to be when I heard the belt squeak but I haven't made it squeak since I got the car back.)
Everyone I talked to said it sounded like it needed new pads so tonight I bought new brake pads and rotors for the front and got everything taken apart. The rotors didn't look bad at all, just some light surface scratches, nothing deep, no warping I could see, and the brake pads look almost brand new. I did notice that the inside brake pad on the passenger side was missing its little metal plate that is usually between the caliper and the pad, so I went ahead and replaced all of the brake pads hoping this lost metal plate was the issue.
I also turned the rotor by hand on each side while the brake pads were off and the only difference I could notice was when turning the passenger side one it made a little more noise almost like it was loose.
I got everything put back together and drove around the neighborhood with my boyfriend in the car to listen, the grinding noise was gone and it seemed to brake really well (never got above 30 mph.) However, on my way to return the rotors to advanced auto (45-50 mph) it started making the thump thump thump noise but without the grinding, still on the passenger side. I can feel it in the gas pedal and now it not only happens when I'm braking, but also any time I let my foot off the gas pedal. The only time I dont feel/hear it is when I'm accelerating.

I just picked up a used 2009 LS 460 AWD last week with 45K miles. I have put about 1000 miles on it so far myself.
When I hit any small depression in the road at 10-45 mph I hear a thump in the rear. The bigger the depression and the more weight in the backseat, the louder the thump noise and even an occasional bottoming out feeling occurs. It hasn't happened at highway speeds so far.
The bottoming out feel occurs only with a medium to large depression. I am not talking about a pot hole, just pavement depressions where two sections are not of equal height or you are transitioning from a primary road to a side street and the is a depression to allow for water run off, etc.
If I have someone sitting in the passenger seat and the backseat and accelerate quickly from a dead stop, I get a similar rear thump and even a bottoming out feel. This occasionally occurs even without a without a depression in the road. With no one in the back seat it does not do it unless there is a big depression in the road.
Finally, when cornering on a 270 degree off ramp at 40 to 50 MPH the rear end will start to hop and bounce. If I slow down to 15-20 mph it goes away. Still, it is irritating and embarrassing. I have tried all comfort settings and get the same results.

I'm hearing a muffled thump in the center rear of my '97 Lumina about 2 minutes after I turn off the engine. It comes in a series of 2 thumps. This started about a week ago and now the thumping is occurring when I'm in a slow idle--just a series of two thumps. Maybe it's releasing pressure? What this could be?

The other day, I was coming home from work. After dropping off co worker, an old man pulled out infront of me. I applied the brakes. As car came to stop I heard a loud thump come from rear. Sounded like i was either bumped by a car, or maybe my entire rear end slid up 5 inches. But that's kinda what it was like. Then after the thump, I put my foot on gas pedal, and instead of car moving forward, the engine just revved. No movement, revved to like 3 grand. I let foot off gas pedal. And tried again. Car moved as normal. Then on the way home i attempted the same combo of rather quick brake and then gas. Same kinda thing happened. Not so hard of a thump. But noise from rear followed by the car no moving, just revving up till i stop and then try again. So even tho my story may suck n my explanation my suck more, whats going on? I just picked this wagon up. 01 glx 65k.

Took my car to a shop today after I'd been experiencing a "tinny clunking" sounding rattle. I was worried it might be my catalytic converter and after couple of bumps on the exhaust system while on the lift, the tech thought this was indeed the case. Replacing the catalytic converter could be a $1500+ job from what I hear if replaced by toyota.

About a month ago, I noticed a slight 'thump thump' at speeds under 20 and started thinking either tire or wheel bearing. Turns didn't seem to change the sound/feel but it always smoothed out over 30 mph. I could not see anything visibly wrong with the tires other than the front pair needed to be replaced. Wear otherwise looked normal. But Monday night, I needed to pickup my laptop computer at work and my wife and her two dogs came along.
It was midnight when we left but for good measure, I felt around the tires and could feel nothing. Overcast, storms were predicted and were on the radar west of us. We walked the dogs; got the computer, and; Holly said she'd like a nightcap. So we went to a local bar and had a good time. Got back in the car, backed up less than 2 ft and 'poof' a cloud of white power flew from the passenger side, front tire:
As I was getting the tire off, a brief 'sprinkling' occurred...

I just noticed during my recent road trip on vacation that my interior rear deck (behind seat) is very sticky to the touch. Had the car about 6 months but never noticed until I tossed a gray fuzzy blanket on it and saw a lot of dust and fuzz from the blanket was sticking to it.

Experienced an occasional (not always) rattle in the passenger rear area of the 2012 Elantra GLS. I have a video on YouTube of this specific rattle that I will post eventually, it says i have to wait a few days until I can post links on here.
