I recently purchased a brand new 2013 Hyundai Elantra and I have noticed that I sometimes when I brake fast but not fully slamming on them from going about 60-80km I hear a loud grinding noise. When this happens the roads are dry so I know that it is not caused by slippery or wet roads.
View 279 RepliesI bought a new 2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe this past August and this is my first car.
My first concern was that Hyundai advertises 27mpg in city and around 37(?) for highway. I acknowledge the fact that Hyundai recently had to lower their mpg estimates for some of their cars and provide reimbursements but however, these reimbursements are for 1-2mpg difference. My car after more than 6 months is still only getting about 14-15 miles on a casual drive in the city and only about 19-20mpg combined and about 24-25 on the highway! I am only getting about half the estimate for in city! I do not drive aggressively. In fact I am a pretty safe driver since I am a new driver and cautious about everything. I am also using premium gas on my car. I called the dealership I got the car from and they were trying to tell me about the reimbursement program which I already knew of... The reimbursement based of the 1-2 mileage difference is not what I want. I want to fix it and get close to the estimated mileage as I can. What is the best way to go about doing this?
The other issue is that sometimes when I hard brake, my car makes a loud grinding noise. My dealership's service center said they could take a look at this. I was mainly wondering if there is anything I should be concerned about for this?
2001 Hyundai Elantra, with an automatic transmission.
1. I am experiencing a "grinding" sound upon my initial acceleration from park? This only occurs when the car has been sitting for a decent amount of time and the engine is relatively cold. To give you more detail: I start the car, throw it in gear and begin to accelerate. The grinding sounds is almost instant and sounds horrible. It is fairly consistent how long it lasts and generally once the car shifts to 2nd or 3rd it goes away. I do not hear it again until I park, leave the car for a while, then start it up and begin driving again.
2. I am hearing a "tension" like noise, also a little like scraping, when I brake at slow speeds coming from my driver side front wheel. I recently had my brakes replaced so I know its probably not the pads and at the time the rotors looked fine too. It is not a constant noise during the breaking either meaning, I apply the breaks, i hear it for a second, then it goes again, then it comes back, then goes away. Again it sounds like a mix between scrapping metal and tension.
What it could be, what I could look at on my own or how to get it resolved?
The topic is as much as I can say to what my car's problem is.
2010 Prius II with 50k miles now.
Tonight I took out my 2013 Elantra for a spin in the ice/snow so see how it handled to see what limitations it had. I came to a stop on a fairly gentle slope that was pretty icy, and the ABS kicked in. It violently pulsed the pedal and made the worst grinding noise. I've never had ABS in any of my cars, but that sound and action seemed like it was breaking something. Is this normal or this car? Or is something wrong that I should have checked out?
View 10 RepliesWhen I leave the car in the parking space for a couple of days (in cold weather) and then start driving it, I notice that when I brake I hear noises (like thud.. thud...). Eventually as the engine warms up the noise goes away. I can never reproduce this at the dealer as I have to drive half an hour to the dealer and by that time the noise goes away. Should I be concerned?
View 3 RepliesI have a 2012 hyundai elantra gls 6speed manual. Every time I apply the brake and turn the car makes a ticking noise that appears to come from the front. It happens when I turn either way. I just had the car inspected, but forgot to mention the noise, and they didn't say anything was wrong with the brakes. It only happens with the brake applied. When I let off the brake the noise stops.
View 3 RepliesTonight it was a perfect 72 degrees and I had to run over to a friend's house and pick up my backpack as I didn't feel like riding my bike the ten miles home with that thing on my back. As I usually do when it's nice outside, I opened both front windows and the sunroof and immediately noticed a mid-level pitch grinding noise that comes and goes but is mostly noticeable at low speeds. Initially I thought it was the brakes dragging but it doesn't change with a brake application so I'm guessing it's the front wheel bearings. I'm calling the dealer in the morning to set up a service appointment.

Last night I checked rear shocks.. and one of them seems to have some oil leakage I am not really sure, but it has... some wet lines above it.. so I guess that's oil...
Dealership tested the car around 15 days ago, but this weird noise wasn't present.. although they order new rear shock and springs...
My car has developed some intermittent noise but I can't pinpoint the exact source, though it seems to be coming from the front. I hear it in 1st gear when accelerating, and it's more audible if I have my windows down. A faint metallic grinding/friction/rotating noise is how I think I could most accurately describe it. I do have an oil change coming up in the next few weeks and will mention it then.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2013 Elantra. There is a rubbing type noise in the driver front when braking and turning right. It only rubs(catches) in one spot. Almost like a pulsation, however doesn't pulsate. Hard to describe. Has a new wheel bearing. There are new pads and rotors (two sets of rotors). Took to my Hyundai dealer today. They can't find anything visible. They said only option is to start adjusting/replacing parts as trial and error.
View 3 RepliesOver the past few months I'd noticed an intermittent grinding noise coming from my left front wheel at low speeds. I took it in once but it refused to play along so I finally managed to catch it on camera and let the dealership listen to it. They booked me for today, saying it sounded like a wheel bearing (to which I agreed) and I dropped her off around ten, not expecting it to cooperate for the second time.
I got a call from the dealer around 2 PM saying that they were able to duplicate the noise and that when they took the left front wheel off and ran the car on the lift with the rest of the wheels off the ground, the noise went away. Even stranger still, when they put the wheel on the tire balancing machine and spun it, gronch, gronch...gronch, gronch....gronch, gronch. It was coming from inside the wheel! I gave them permission to dismount the tire from the wheel and about ten minutes later I got another call saying they'd found a handful of tiny hard rubber balls inside the mounted wheel/tire assembly that were rolling down the inside of the wheel and causing the grumbling at low speed.
Here's the kicker: they were in all four wheels! The tech even saved them for me so I could take a look and they don't look like anything mass-produced; some are larger than others, some are round and some are oval-shaped but when I dropped one on the glass advisor desk, it made a very clear 'Clink!'.
I've read a few posts about the Prius braking system. Just wondering what other owners have done when they experience the metal grinding noise and when brakes need to be replaced. My car has around 67,000 miles. I was planning to take it to a Toyota dealer, although prefer to find a certified Prius or hybrid mechanic at an independent shop.
View 3 RepliesI just had new pads(ceramics, not sure of the brand) all around and new front rotors installed from a local shop that I trust. When braking while cold, there is a grinding sound and feel, I took the car back to the shop, they've acknowledged the issue, double checked their work, and are willing to replace the pads if it continues, which it has. Is there a break in period for ceramics, should I specify a different type of pad.
View 2 RepliesBought my Prius (2005, with 160K miles) about a month ago and since I've had it I am hearing a metal on metal grinding noise when braking at low speed. How loud the sound is depends on how hard I am on pushing on the brakes. One of my co-workers has the same model and said that his does not make that sound. Not sure if its just because it has after-market brake pads or something? This noise only occurs when braking at low speeds (below 10 MPH) so I assume its an issue with the front brakes.
Is this something I need to get looked at by the dealership? I had a local mechanic that worked on my old Honda beater take a look and he said that the rotors and brake pads looked new and wasn't sure why they'd make noise.
So my dealer diagnosed my 2007 Prius with a transaxle issue, but what bothers me is that it doesn't make the sound all the time. When I brake lightly, there is no sound and when I brake heavily there isn't either. It is only when I do a medium brake above 7 mph of course and around 20's mph range. I am hoping for something besides the transaxle...maybe a wheel bearing...anything.

I had this issue a year go and i took it to the dealer and they told me that i need to replace my rotors and my front brake pads.
A year later the noise came back and they told me that i need to replace my pads. I replaced my front break pads and a month later the noise is back. I went back and checked my pads and the pads were still new.
I only hear the sound when braking after driving in a heavy traffic or on a stop and go traffic. I don't hear the sound when i start to drive or driving in a non traffic condition.
I may be worrying over nothing but lately when I brake or accelerate I hear a grinding noise on my radio. I listen to AM. With my other vehicle it usually meant there was a problem somewhere.
View 1 RepliesMy car was making a weird grinding noise when braking above 7mph. I did the neutral brake thing and seems to go away sometimes. The dealership said it needed new rotors and brakes, so I went ahead and did that with them, then called me to let me know the sound did not go away. Now they are stating my grinding noise is coming from the "inverter generator" which is what they said was the transmission. I am just curious why this goes away sometimes and if it's related to my previous issues with the car.
View 1 RepliesThe downshifting while braking is very obvious during braking, I can literally feel the gearshifts going down from 5th Gear to 1st as I brake. I have driven a wide range of cars but haven't experienced this earlier. Is there any modification that can be done or added to change this and make it smoother like usual cars?

I found same issues on the Sonata forums but I just wanted to know if we elantra users had the same problems like me. Its annoying & I don't find it normal. What can be done ????
