So I've noticed this alarming engine rattle when I first start car as if there is no oil? It only lasts a few seconds! Was it diagnosed with Hyundai? Maybe a quirk of the motor, but seems like over time would cause excessive wear on engine?
View 14 RepliesI saw some other threads lately other people having startup problems thought i would post mines as well. Mines sometimes would startup then rattle alot/Car shakes and spit excessive smoke from tail pipe. Then sometimes it would startup up at all, No crank No Check Engine Light either

Both my lowbeam bulbs went out at the same time on my 2011 back around 48k miles. I believe I read there is a TSB on this issue along with a strange engine rattle at startup.

My car started doing this about a week after purchase. It's been consistently doing this every morning. In high elevation, colder climate the sound is louder and longer. Car's been to service 4 times. Service Trip summary:
1) Returned as cannot reproduce
2) Replaced Starter (even though sound happens After start)
3) Replace belt tensioner
4) Service stop, tech said he would contact his rep - rep said no fix "it's normal- related to component in timing chain". (Huh?)
Service tech said he's heard a few of the 2012 Elantra's with this noise.
So I had my first oil change this past weekend at the dealer. I just noticed that the engine whine during my AM start-up is gone. They must have done something else to my car besides the oil change.

My 13' Elantra Sedan has around 3K on it and a weird noise comes from the engine at start-up.
Sometimes it goes away quickly and sometimes it will linger for a while.

It rattled very loud for 1 or 2 seconds on a cold start the other day too. Noise appears to be coming from the engine. It does it pretty much all the time, at idling, when I accelerate it accelerates too and when I slow down it kinds of do too slowly. Need another new short block or is it something else like the timing chain or a bearing?
Just started getting this noise recently when I start the car. It's coming from the engine bay and only occurs briefly for maybe a second, mainly when the engine is warm. It's a rattle sound. Other than the rattle, the car runs great..

View 14 RepliesI just bought a 2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS (Canadian model) with 44k km. When I first test drove the car, the dealer (Honda) had the car warmed up and ready to go. As a result, I didn't notice the loud engine or anything. All I noticed is the engine was louder on acceleration versus my 2008 accord. I already bought the car but today I asked to test drive the car again (I'm excited) and noticed a loud ticking on startup? I asked the Honda dealer what was wrong and they simply said Hyundais are louder than Hondas. My 2008 accord has a ticking engine already but Honda is rebuilding the engine. This car is ticking louder than my 2008 accord. However, the car does quiet down when the engine is warm.

When I start my car I hear this very loud noise. I think it is coming from the exhaust but not sure. This only happens when the car is cold(not weather) and after a few minutes the noise is gone. I have aftermarket lowering springs on the car, do you think that caused the problem?(I'm thinking no)...
View 4 RepliesI have a 2012 Elantra with about 47,000 miles, and I've noticed that the oil pressure light comes on for about 2-3 seconds at startup. It never comes on while idling or driving, and the car runs like a champ. I checked the oil level, and it's good, and I get regular oil changes.
View 14 RepliesMy 2012 with 5300 miles on it (oil change at 4400 miles) is now making a pretty significant lower end knocking noise at WARM STARTUP, as in when the car sits for about 10 minutes when I go into the store. It lasts for about two seconds, but it's significant and it's loud. It seems to have started about 500 miles ago and I can't say it was due to the oil change. Oil level is full and clean - I check it every weekend, even on a new car. Could this be a timing chain noise? Don't know. All I do know for certain is that this is very irritating and embarrassing for a new car. People around my car when I start it look at me like and seem to say "Really?"
Cold startup on my car is actually surprisingly quiet, compared to my Nissan Frontier V6.
I don't know what is causing this but I bought a 2012 elantra last week (500 miles on it so far). Yesterday when I went to start my car the clicker wasn't opening or locking the doors so I had to use my key to open the door. When I got in my car would start but was "stuck" in park and I couldn't shift past park (yes I had my foot on the brake). After about 10 minutes it just randomly worked... Today I was driving to work stopped to get gas and as I was stopping I realized I couldn't shift passed neutral to put in park (I could go back and forth between drive and neutral). While this was going on my windows would not go up or down. Again after 10 minutes the problem seemed to fix itself. What could be causing this?
View 12 RepliesI have had a rattle that lasts 2 seconds on my 2012 Elantra for the since about 2 oil changes ago. The car has 152,000 miles on it and I've changed the oil regularly per the maintenance schedule, although not always with a Hyundai filter.
I'm strongly suspecting that this is the timing chain tensioner, but I could be wrong. Other than this, the car runs fine. I tried having the oil changed by the Hyundai dealer with the OEM oil filter and the problem appears to be a little worse. It first started to appear on cold start up after the car sat for >8 hrs or so. Now, it appears on cold start up >2 hrs. I noticed that the dealer put 5W20 in it.
I'm wondering if lower viscosity oil makes the problem worse during hot weather. It seems when the weather is colder it takes longer for it to appear. I'm wondering what my options are here. I really don't know how much $$ it is to go after the tensioner and how critical it is - the dealer said they do replace them and that doesn't always fix the problem though I'm not sure what he meant. I have read a few other posts about tensioners here, but I'm also wondering if this is an issue with the new engine.
I am the proud owner of a 2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS. After I bought this car (used), I have been having an issue with the exhaust. When you first start up the car, it idles and sounds great! But then as you put it in drive, well, that is when, what sounds to me like exhaust, rattle starts. you only hear it when you are on the gas or have a load on the engine (like A/C) at idle. It sounds like it is coming from the sound the left side of the engine (if looking at the engine from under the hood). Is there a way to fix it without taking it to the dealership?

View 22 RepliesI have a rattle in the dash up in the middle of the dash kind of in between the two sides of the car and between the window and front so basically right in the middle of the dash, if I slap it with my hand I can make the same sort of rattle so something is loose, bad thing is I dropped by dealership and it didn't do it when I was in the car driving with the service guy but I slapped on the dash and you could here a something loose sound rattle same kind I hear when driving. He said that is normal for things to make noise in there when you tap the dash. About a week ago I had the dirty sock smell coming from my vents so I took out the Cabin Filter and sprayed Lysol in the intake the put a new filter in. This is about the same time the rattle started. I wonder if the Lysol might have made something come loose in the vent system.
View 3 RepliesExperience with rattling coming from the rear/trunk area. My 2013 1500km new limited with Nav have developed a very bad rattle coming from the back.
I have tried removing the rear deck and no luck, There are now nothing in the trunk except for my spare tire kit. the rattle gets louder when I fold down the rear seat. The rattle seems worse and more frequent when the car is between 10 to 60 km/s...
Currently have 85k miles. About 20k miles ago I noticed when I have the driver window down I would hear a rattle coming from under the car when accelerating. Doesn't happen every time but does quite often. Usually goes away almost immediately. I'm not having any other issues and with my warranty out I'm not anxious for a drip to the dealer.
