As I was driving today on the highway, I saw a whitish cloud of smoke come out of the exhaust.......the car seem a bit wobbly after that. It only happened once. the ring around exhaust tip is all black. I am not sure if it has damaged anything? What it could be?

I was at a 4-way stop sign. No other cars were around so I accelerated. Then suddenly, I hear and see a car coming at me REALLY fast, and well, I panicked. I floored the throttle (almost literally), and I heard something popping or maybe it was a farting sound... It happened so fast that I don't remember clearly...
Then behind me was a HUGE cloud of smoke behind me. I mean really, it covered up the whole street. It was 10 PM, so I couldn't really tell what color it was, but it seemed to be white... So I turned off my car. Checked the engine, no smoke from the engine. I started it up again, and instead to revving to about 2000 rpm at start up like it always does, it only went to about 1000, and more smoke was flushed out the exhaust.
I was close to home, and with no 24-hour mechanic shop around me, I drove home. As I drove home, I had quite a bit of smoke trail behind me which scared me through out the whole 2 minutes of driving. I got home, and I checked the exhaust again, but there was no more smoke. However, a burning smell lingered around the exhaust.
I was driving down a 2 lane road doing the speed limit and I found myself behind a car going much slower than the limit. It is one of those roads where every once in awhile the double yellow line is dotted so you can pass.
I finally got to the point where I could pass as there was no oncoming traffic, so I turned left to pass the guy, floored it, the tranny started to kick down into passing gear and then the car sputtered, didn't accelerate and blew out a huge white cloud from the exhaust and the cel light flashed on and off. The cloud was something like you would see in a James Bond film to get rid of cars following you. All of the cars behind me had to stop or slow up because you couldn't see. I didn't realize that until I looked in the rear view mirror. I thought the car just sputtered, I didn't even realize about the cloud until I looked back.
Our 12 elantra with 26,500 miles went up in a big cloud of smoke on monday. Driving along about 45 miles an hour and lost power and huge cloud of smoke. Engine still running but any attempt to accelerate and it falls on it's face. Smoke out the taipipe all the time. After about 12 dealer excuses they say it needs a new short block. The wife drives it all the time so it doesn't get babied and it doesn't get the snot run out of it either.
View 76 RepliesMy car just turned 20k miles. I haven't abused it and rarely tach it over 4k. I needed to cross a lane in heavy traffic so I put my foot into it, it tached up to maybe 6grand, dropped a gear or so and out the tail pipe comes a huge cloud of smoke. I mean huge. Looked like it burnt a quart of oil in a second. I had just changed the oil a few days before. Mobil full syn. I know the lvl was correct because i checked it the day after i changed it.
View 10 RepliesThis S10 has 4 wheel drive and the V6 engine and has 88,000 miles on it. Just about everything except the engine has been replaced because it was a work and plow car and took a beating. It is a great plow car, by the way. Recently a cloud of smoke comes out of the exhaust when you start the engine that has been sitting overnight. Mechanic says it is just old, but someone said that replacing the umbrella seals might do the trick. Stopped at my local auto parts store and they had never heard of umbrella seals.
View 7 RepliesOn cold start or when the cars been cool down for a hour or so, a huge cloud of smoke will come out. it smells plastic burn than a rich gas smell.
So far this is what i did, a oil change, add a no smoke oil treatment, replaced with an oem pcv valve (this fix my rx300 smoking issue years ago)
Video 1, Friday at 3pm. the temperature is ~60 degrees, less smoke after a pcv changed
Video 2, Friday after noon at 6p.m. ~50 degrees
Video 3, Next day 10 a.m. ~48 degrees
In person it looks white smoke, but the camera captures it more blue smoke. I have been constantly monitoring my levels and oil and coolants are just normal.
While driving my 2011 Elantra a few minutes ago I just heard a moderate noise much like I had just driven over an empty pop can. Then white/ grey smoke started pouring out of my exhaust to the point I couldn't see the cars behind me. Just had 15000 mile maintenance about two weeks ago. My hubby has a lot of knowledge regarding older vehicles but says he's never seen anything like it before!
View 13 RepliesMy Elantra is at 14k miles and it has happened twice now that the pipe has released white/grayish smoke when accelerating abruptly (pretty much forcing the engine) on the highway above 60mph. I can see in my mirror that it leaves a pretty big smoke screen behind me.
I took it for an inspection after the first time it happened and the mechanic said it might have just been steam and that I should not worry about it. Since my 15k maintenance check is coming up, I will ask that they actually check on it.
I'm also curious to know if this could cause me to get a ticket? I'm thinking I could get pulled over for "imparing the vision of drivers behind me and making it dangerous for them", or something like that.
How many of you have this issue with your 2010 5.4 puffs a cloud of smoke on start up I have 20,000 klicks on mine after 8 months....
View 7 Repliescar has 63k on her, bought it and end up having the fuel lines replaced b/c of a faulty line. they checked the whole fuel system ect...now its going through coolant, never over heats, nothing is wrong else where...just going through coolant and having some whitish smoke out of the tail pipes. 2006 2.0t
View 1 RepliesI have a 1999 Nissan Maxima that I am going to pass on to my soon to be 16 year old daughter. Her sister had it when she was 17-18 after I used it for several years. It has 240,000 miles, is in excellent condition and has had many of the vital components of the vehicle replaced. It now suddenly has started blowing a whitish smoke from the tailpipe. It has a very strong fuel smell while at idle or at a stop light or sign. It losses no oil, or coolant. The service engine light came on at the same time roughly that this smoke showed up. Under diag. hook-up it says bad o2 sensor. Should I assume that replacing the o2 sensor will solve this issue? If so, is that something I could do? I read online how to do it and it seems rather simple.
View 8 RepliesRecently replaced the valve-stem seals, along with the head gasket in hopes that would fix this, but no change. It is my 1985 B2000 that (sometimes) emits Enormous amounts of whitish, lingering smoke on a cold-start, enough to hide a Sherman tank or two. So far, the best way to avoid the smoke is by Not engaging the auto-choke (not depressing gas pedal at all before starting) and let it warm up, even though it runs roughly for a about 5 mins., and then smooths out, but, with no smoke.
Oil use is less than 1/2Qt per 3K miles. The smoke does not have the usual oil smell - but not anti freeze either, (only water in system anyway). And it seems that letting the engine idle a bit Before shutting down avoid the smoke... Problem started about 2 years ago, and after fiddling with it all this time with no good results. Tho' I have considered possibly something maybe coming down a vacuum line...? but have no way to confirm.

When I got home from a long drive I noticed this white-ish smoke coming from under the hood. I opened it and found that the tube for the window wash was disconnected so I re connected it. Idk if that's what was causing the smoke or not. I also noticed That at the bottoms there was something leaking from the tube. See pics. Bottom tube with the silver connector. What do these go to? The smell was kinda sweet.

I have a 2005 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder, and I have been trying to figure out a hard cold start issue that also causes whitish grayish smoke to come out of the tailpipe when I first start the car.
When I first start the car after it has sitting at least 8-10+ hours the engine will crank over and being starting up but its almost as if it hesitates and then fully starts up. Once it does start the smoke will come out of the tailpipe for about 10 - 30 seconds and smells somewhat of burning fuel. I think the problem may be a leaking fuel injector. When I use my car during the day this issue doesn't happen at all after first startup

I have a 2004 F250 with 180K miles on it. About a year ago my truck would smoke pretty bad so I got on here and found I needed to take my FICM off and do some touch up soldering on it in a few places. Did that and everything has been fine until this past weekend when I noticed a little bit of whiteish smoke. Could it be the FICM again or something else. still have power and all gauges are normal. What to check next. Also, I do not have a scangauge, just the stock gauges.

Since we started getting colder mornings I have noticed a small amount of white, or blueish white smoke on start up for about 5 secs or so. Last week in Montana I did notice the light smoke for about 5 secs then looked like vapor for about 1 min (was about 30 degrees out)
Only during the first start of the day on cooler mornings (45 and under) have i noticed it, nothing while driving, no knocks or hard start, no codes. I am about due for an oil change (Delo in there right now but switching to syn), and do have the canned tow tune from SCT on there. Anything I should have checked or should check, I am decent with wrench.
Also I have noticed the blue sleeve that goes to the front of turbo coming from the front of the truck (maybe the cooler?), kinda looks like rubber gets a slightly dirty coating to it, not sure if normal or related.
This is kind of strange, I have a hard start problem, when I crank it the first time, it fires immediately, kind of like a romp, but doesn't start, then when I crank again I get a lot of whitish smoke and no start. I read to try and unplug the ICP and try it. That worked, and I had oil in the connector. I replaced the ICP, but have the same problem. I still have to unplug the ICP for the truck to start. When it does start, it runs great! No injector stiction, no smoke, no rough idle, it runs and sounds great. Why unplugging the ICP is still required to start? (Only after sitting for more than 10-12 hours).

I pretty much give full throttle and i see in my back mirror grayish smoke coming out of the exhaust, kind of like when you are on a very dusty road. But i do it again right after or 10 minutes later and it does not happen again until the next day. Then it's the same deal.
I'm not doing anything different.. I do my oil changes every ~4k miles i drive mostly city with barely any stop and go tho. Is this something i should worry about and go see the dealership? Or is this because it is a GDI engine?
I did not have this with my old car even at high miles. But then again my old car was no GDI. I am currently sitting at 24k miles.
My 2011 Sonata is now at 56000 km (35k mi). While driving with a friend, I floored it when entering on the highway and he told me there was some dark smoke coming out of the exhaust.
I take very good care of my car and recently started using supreme gas and synthetic oil. It runs very smooth and never really had any problems... should I be worried? Is this normal?
How steamy the exhaust is right after a cold start? I have always noticed it in my passenger mirror, but yesterday I decided to stand behind the car and watch it right after starting it up, and I actually saw a few puffs of black smoke coming out with the steam. I'm not losing any coolant, so I think all of this must be caused by the engine running extremely rich when cold, the fumes were pretty bad too. Once the idle settles down the black puffs go away, but the steam lasts a good while. I have never had a newer car run so rich that it caused black sooty smoke.
