When braking, my car seems to break/slow down just fine...but right before the car comes to a complete stop, i hear a, dare i say, scraping/grinding noise. I found it odd. When going really slow and braking, it does it too. Otherwise, I'd say the brakes work ok. It doesn't make the sound every time when coming to a stop, but i'd say more times then not.

It's random, sporadic, usually for 3 to 5 seconds; doesn't seem to be related to speed, braking or turning; sometimes barely perceptible, sometimes very loud. It drives fine. Wheel bearing maybe?

I replaced the serpentine belt a month ago, so it can't be that. Its coming from the front of the engine. Sounds almost like the fan bearings or something below that is scraping. I've turned off the heater and it still does it, but the fan is spinning all the time, so I'm not sure what is going on.In the background you can hear cars going by on the overpass above, but I'm focused on the grinding noise. Car is not moving, its in park and makes the noise when moving also, with gas or at idle.
View 3 RepliesI just bought this camry recently, it's an 2008 SE 4-cylinder with about 95k on it. Everything is fine on the car with the exception of one thing. Whenever I start it after a prolonged period of it being off, say in the morning or sometimes even having it off for an hour and then starting it again, when I start it, a loud grinding/scrapping noise comes from the front of the car.
This noise lasts for a good 30-60 seconds and as the car picks up speed it disappears. It just happens whenever I start it. Now I'm not sure that if the brakes or jammed or is it something to do with the transmission. I mention the transmission because during the drive, the car seems under a lot of pressure as if towing a large trailer and has trouble accelerating. At times when going downhill, it actually is slowing down as opposed to picking up speed and as soon as I let off the gas the speed drop from significantly.
I know this isn't normal because I used to an 2005 Camry LE 4-cylinder. So I know how the engine and transmission behave.
I took it the dealer recommended mechanic and he said that everything is fine. He's a nincompoop really. I took it to my mechanic and he said that the axle and bearing need to be changed on the passenger side and just the axle on the drivers side. My mechanic is a family friend and is skilled in his trade so I know he's not trying to shaft me.
When on the highway, there is an occasional scraping/grinding almost a windy noise from the front left of the car. Happens most at high speeds when going over bumps. it's a Toyota matrix 2003 with 163k miles. We're on a car trip and are wondering if we need to address this now or if it can wait a few days.

It is more pronounced on the driver side and there is a definitive roar at highway speeds. I have had the tires rotated, balanced and tire pressure checked numerous times and still no fix. It has 37K miles on it.
View 11 RepliesI have a 2007 Elantra with 138,000 miles. I never had any slipping or jerking or reverse issues in the past. I got into the car put it in reverse just fine then put it in drive and nothing happened, I put it in park and the car kept rolling like in neutral and started making a loud grinding noise. When I put the transmission in any other gear the noise stops but will not move and acts as if in neutral.

I have a scraping noise coming from the transmission when the clutch is not pressed in, the noise is present whether I am in gear or just in neutral. If I press the clutch in than the noise will completely go away. I have searched and found that these symptoms usually mean its an internal transmission problem and not just the throw out or pilot bearing.
View 4 RepliesI have an 07 GS 350. When I'm driving on any winding road, every time I turn the wheel to the right, I hear a kind of scraping sound for as long as the steering wheel is turned even a little. It's only when I turn the wheel to the right and only and only the front left tire.
I thought it might be the disc brake dust shield, but I pulled the tire off, took a look, and can see that it isn't touching the rotor anywhere. There really isn't much else that I can think of that it could be, so I'm basically stumped. The brake pads are nice and thick and everything looks really good.
This is finally getting too annoying to ignore. The noise sounds like i'm dragging a piece of metal along the ground whenever i turn right. the sharper the turn, the louder the sound.

Now it will do it during left turns and at very low speeds when I'm turning the wheel also.... I checked to see if the tire was getting hot, and if there was anything hanging underneath, and found nothing.
View 1 RepliesSo... I bought Ksport Coilovers and had them installed about a month ago. Were on the car about a week and started to get creaking noises from the front. So, I contacted BSH (who sold them) who put me in contact with the Director of Operations for Ksport...
Send them to him, and he replies that he thinks my sway bar is high, and that it should be "parallel with the ground. Today when backing up (down right) I get a horrible scraping grinding sound. I stop, get out (thinking it is the fender liner) only to find no damage. So I keep checking and find a fresh scrape on the axle. I drive (gingerly) home and pull the wheels off and check everything in the front. It is all tight and nothing seems to be broken. I look at the sway bar end (which is curved).
Even after replacing the brake pads, I hear a scraping or grinding sound as the wheels rotate, one scrape/grind per rotation. It's particularly noticeable when I turn left, but the sound seems to disappear when I turn right. The mechanic said he doesn't hear it, but I think that's because he must have driven it on a gravel road. What else could be causing this noise? I worry that I'm making the problem worse by continuing to drive it.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2004 F150 4x4 Fx4 supercrew with 5.4 engine and 46,000 miles. For the past three weeks now I have a periodic Grinding /scraping sound that seems to be coming from the front passenger's side of the truck. It can come on with light driving and braking in town or start while driving 70 mph down the interstate without even touching my brakes. The thing is I just about always have to come to a complete stop to make it go away. 10 Minutes later it comes again. It's loud enough for everyone around me to start staring at my truck. Sounds like metal scraping concrete and gets deeper as I slow down and when I fully press my brake pedal it goes "curchunk and the sound is gone for a while. I thought maybe my caliper was sticking or maybe the truck is trying to go into 4x4. One friend even suggested me to check the dust cover behind the brake for rocks.
View 12 RepliesTonight I took out my 2013 Elantra for a spin in the ice/snow so see how it handled to see what limitations it had. I came to a stop on a fairly gentle slope that was pretty icy, and the ABS kicked in. It violently pulsed the pedal and made the worst grinding noise. I've never had ABS in any of my cars, but that sound and action seemed like it was breaking something. Is this normal or this car? Or is something wrong that I should have checked out?
View 10 RepliesThe brakes on my 2007 Hyundai Elantra make a grinding sound (almost like finger nails on wood) when I have tried to stop in icy conditions. It's also hard to get the car to stop and I end up pumping the brake. A Hyundai dealer replaced the front brakes over a year ago and Adirondack tire replaced back brake pads in the summer. Is the noise part of the anti-lock feature or does it sound like a problem?

When this happens the roads are dry so I know that it is not caused by slippery or wet roads.
View 279 RepliesI have a 2006 Elantra 4 cylinder with only 55,000 miles put on it.
Whenever I accelerate I hear this noise that sounds like a lawn lower under my hood, usually only there until around 45 MPH, then it dies down a bit. It as been getting louder and more....... screechy..... as of late.
Also, when idle, there is a sound that almost sounds like a metal grinding chugging noise. It comes and goes with no real rhythm or timing.
Additionally, there is a metal grinding noise coming from what seems to be my front right wheel area when I make wide right turns, as well as intermittently while driving regularly.
To my knowledge, neither of the motion noises seem to be happening above 45-55 MPH, or they are too soft to hear at those speeds.
2003 Elantra GT ... Yesterday I went out and heard a sort of grinding noise from the rear. I thought it was the brakes. This morning I took it to a mechanic and he said it was the brake pad rubbing on some rust on the rotor.
This evening my wife took the car out and, in addition to the sound, said she smelled burning rubber. So I took it out and after a while figured out it is the bottom of wheel coil (see photo) on the rear driver side rubbing against the tire! I assume the mechanic didn't spot it because it may move out of contact with the tire when the car is lifted up. What happened here?
Tonight it was a perfect 72 degrees and I had to run over to a friend's house and pick up my backpack as I didn't feel like riding my bike the ten miles home with that thing on my back. As I usually do when it's nice outside, I opened both front windows and the sunroof and immediately noticed a mid-level pitch grinding noise that comes and goes but is mostly noticeable at low speeds. Initially I thought it was the brakes dragging but it doesn't change with a brake application so I'm guessing it's the front wheel bearings. I'm calling the dealer in the morning to set up a service appointment.
