Elantra GD (2013+) :: Sunroof Rattle When Opened
Mar 27, 2013
Sunroof developing rattles? It is more noticeable with the sunroof open. Have had the car 9 months and it has just started rattling on any bumps- very annoying.

View 16 RepliesToday was the first day I drove my Elantra on the interstate with the sunroof open. When I was cruising at 65-70mph, I kept hearing a noise that I thought was coming from another car. It sort of sounded like a popping or thumping noise. After a few minutes, I reached my hand up and noticed the sound was coming from the metal bar that rises up a little at the front of the opening when the glass slides back. The wind was vibrating it and making it flap in the wind.

View 8 RepliesNothing is more annoying to me than constant rattles and noises in a vehicle. My 2012 Limited Elantra makes a couple of noises that are really annoying. The first is a constant light rattle the seems to come from the dome light area or the sunroof. I haven't been able to pinpoint it, but it drives me nuts. The other noise comes from the back doors area, or maybe the pillars. It happens on both sides, but mostly on the drivers side, and it only happens when the car goes over certain bumps, or when I take a curve a certain way. It almost sounds like a cracking noise. I've heard of glove compartment rattles, but that doesn't seem to happen with my car.
View 87 RepliesThis might be better in the section of sun-roof issues, but I could not see how to add it there. Our 2013 GT has less that 5 thousand miles on it, and we've developed a problem where on occasion the sunroof will suddenly open or close all by itself. Sometimes it will just move one way or the other 2 or 3 inches than stop. Sounds crazy, and like something that will be hard to find.
View 2 RepliesCame in on a cool cloudy morning to work. I listened to the torrential downpours all morning, then it cleared out. When I went out to the lot at quitting time, I was horrified to see the sunroof open. When I got in the car, it was dry, so sometime after the storms moved out, it got opened. I do leave the car unlocked, but can't imagine someone opened it, in fact I think you can't after the key has been removed for a while. Should I pull the fuse to it???
View 7 RepliesI parked my BMW X3 in my driveway yesterday and then went inside. I live in Oregon and it's been cold and raining for the last several weeks. When my wife and I went to get in the car about an hour later, we discovered that the sun roof and all four windows were wide open and the interior was soaking wet. I certainly didn't open the windows and sun roof. I've probably opened the sun roof once in the three years we've owned the car, and, with all the cold and rain the last several weeks, I've had no reason to open any of the windows. While the car was left unlocked, I did not leave my keys in the car and we live on a fairly private cul-de-sac. I'm baffled as to how this could happen and I can't even come up with a theory.
View 3 Replies2013 Elantra GT prompted me to join. There is a creaking sound coming from the closed panoramic sunroof when I drive slowly over an uneven surface (e.g. driving over an uneven gravel driveway that has potholes). It is only an issue when the car is subject to a twisting action, and the roof is closed. For example, there is no creak when I drive 90 degrees over a speed bump; but, there is a creak if I drive over the speed bump at a diagonal. The creak disappears when the sunroof is open. I have taken the car back to the dealership several times and they don't know how to address the problem .
How this creak can be eliminated (without use of sledge hammer, which has crossed my mind at few times; also, driving with the sunroof open all the time is not an option for those of us living in the north).
Noticed an abnormal amount of noise when they open their sunroof?
Mine seems noiser than others I have had and adjusting does not seem to work.
Would the wind deflector work?
My sunroof ! I was leaving a parking garage and the thing just opened. I can't understand why. I closed it and it did it Again! Very strange. Phaeton has 90,000 miles and has been free of electronic issues for two years.
View 5 RepliesThere were 2 times I'd noticed my sunroof opened vertically when I walked to my car without recalling ever opening it. I'd just think maybe I forgot to close it. When I looked at the knob, it wasn't switch to a level so i thought it was weird.
Today while driving, my sunroof did the same thing. It opened by itself. I didn't initiate it whatsoever.
So the other day I went to close my windows and sunroof, I turned the knob to close on the sunroof and it went complete closed then opened it self all the way... Tried many times.. Could it need the switch going bad?
View 4 RepliesParked my car at work today and around 4:00 a few people stopped by my office to let me know that all of my windows were down in my car. I was like ..that weird. So I went outside and lo and behold all of the windows were down and the sunroof was open. That is odd I though. So I closed them all and no further problems.
Did I perhaps sit on my FOB and press the buttons a certain way that made all of the window go down?? My office is 2 doors down from the outside of the building where my car is parked, so the signal from the FOB would have to have traveled pretty far?
Other than that, my car has 73K miles and has been flawless!!
I just bought a 2011 GTI with the Autobahn package. When I open the sunroof all the way there is a buffeting sound and pressure on my ears. I had a 2006 MK5 which had the same problem. I'm aware of only opening it partially, but I like it completely open. There really isn't a solution offered by VW except for the exterior sunroof visor. I tried this on my MK5 but it didn't work. I like the mesh pop up thing on the new Touareg. Is there anything like that out there?
View 13 RepliesHappened 2 days ago, just as it started to rain. The sunroof opened about 15 cm, then just as I was starting to try to close it, it then closed itself by reversing smoothly.
Since then the sun roof has operated normally. I have waited for this problem to repeat, but it hasn't. For the first time, I tried to do a search, but failed using the key words "Sun Roof" and "moon roof". Since I know there has been several threads regarding the repair of the opening dial using a Bic pen casing, I know I am performing the search incorrectly. Issue only has happened once, and my hands were nowhere near the opening dial.
My sunroof opened on the highway today with the switch in the closed position. Being a Seattleite, this could create a very wet condition in the cabin! I have owned the car for two years and have never experienced this before.
View 8 RepliesSo I use my sunroof pretty regularly and a week ago I opened it to an alarming creaking sound. It opened fine but when I closed it it sits. I called the dealer and even though I only have 20k miles the warranty expired 2 weeks ago. How screwed am I here?
View 3 RepliesI had a creaking in the sunroof that the dealer resolved a while ago but now have one or 2 rattles from the inside back area (maybe the hatch) even on small bumps. I already took everything out except the spare tire and don't think that is it.
View 15 RepliesEver since the weather has warmed up to open the pano roof, I've noticed it rattles terribly. It never did this before the winter.
It rattles even when I'm driving slow, and actually that's usually only when I can actually hear it because at higher speeds the rushing wind drowns it out.
It was such a nice day today that I popped the Sunroof open on my shinny new 2013 Prius which I haven't had a chance to do until today. When I parked the Prius and opened the door to get out, I heard a 'single beep' sound. Confused and not knowing exactly what that 'single beep' was intended for, I proceeded out of the Prius and touched the button to lock the doors. But due to my absentmindedness, I then noticed that I had left the Sunroof 'OPEN'.
However, I couldn't believe that the doors actually locked and the Prius didn't do any other kind of additional alarming with the Sunroof left open. So, I presume that this 'one single beep' I heard when I opened the door was intended to inform me that the Sunroof was left open. It's a good thing that I wasn't in a hurry today and noticed it because I didn't know what that single beep was meant for.
My 2013 has developed a rattle. The rear window visor (outside) on passenger side is loose - or loosening up... and rattles a lot when driving, which is very annoying.... Took a quick look to see how this thing is held into place, not quite sure what's best way to take it apart...
