Clunk in the front end when going over speed bumps? That is the only time I ever get it, never on bumpy roads or anything like that just at speed bumps. It seems to be louder on the drivers side but I am pretty sure its on both sides. I never noticed it until a couple speed bumps were installed along my normal route, but that could be because maybe I never drove over them previously?
View 3 RepliesSo about a month ago my 2013 Sonata GLS started to make some clunking noise going over the littlest bumps over the road from the front end on both right and left side.
I brought it to one mechanic and they said the rack and pinion needs replacing which is an expensive fix. I couldn't believe that was the problem as I had no leaks and it was on their solid. I ended up taking it to my uncles mechanic and he stated its the stabilizer links on the front right and front left wheels. My way to work has a lot of bad pot holes... so I'm hoping that the stabilizers are actually the problem.
Anyways, tomorrow I will be bringing it to the mechanic to have them both changed. I know a lot have been complaining about this issue and instead of replacing the rack and pinion, I thought I'd try and see if it actually is the stabilizer links and provide a fix for some of the sonata owners on here.
I went to check out a '03 7.3 SD the other day. It didn't seem to have a lot of surge when I accelerated to freeway speeds. Kind of lazy feeling. Didn't smoke out the back though. It did have a front end clunking sound going over the parking lot speed bumps. I opened the oil fill cap while it was idling and it blew a plume of vapor/oil about 9' high like a steam engine puffing. Held my hand over it and got a oil wet palm after just a few seconds. I'm hesitant to drop any $$ on it.
View 6 RepliesSo i just had installed a brand new set of bilsetin pss9. Going over bumps or pot holes at a slow speed, i get loud clunking out the back. Did not have this prior to the coilovers. Its dropped almost 3/4 of the thread. What this is? Also the shop that installed them, had put them in with out the rear upper spring plate, is that a standard install on these?
View 1 RepliesI had to raise the car a bit to clear the apr turbo outlet pipe. Raised a little too much and was hearing a clunking sound pulling into my driveway or speedbumps, etc. Contacted HR and they said the coilovers have an operating range and to lower them a bit. So.. i have about 3/8" of thread left on both fronts and my (not so scientific measuring method) fender/ground is 24" vs 26.25 stock as measured on a stock gti on my dealer lot. I still have a ton of thread to drop the car (about 1.5") as seen in the picture below. The issue i have is what the spring looks like. It rides fine in my day to day commute so its not noticeable but looking at it, it looks collapsed??

View 6 RepliesAside from the clutch and gear changing noise, recently I've been noticing something that sounds almost like a rattle when going over bumps, say a series of filled potholes on a highway where they just slightly bump to move your wheel around, it's not that deep thumping you would expect to hear but it sounds like something is loose in terms of the suspension.
Happens on the front and seems like its coming from both sides. To me it sort of sounds like they forgot to tighten something up when they removed the shipping "blocks"/spacers, but I am not exactly sure what to check. I really do not want to visit the dealership at only 600 miles on the clock ...
What this clunk could be?? in my truck in signature, 2003 F350 CCLB 4x4, 4" lift. its only low speed, on very light bumps. really does it when the truck flexes, like turning into an elevated driveway or something. driving me absolutely insane the last few months. it sounds like its coming from right under my feet
-removed front shocks and drove
-removed front sway bar and drove
-front wheel bearings are new and tight
-front leaf spring, rear upper shackle bushings are new (thought that was problem..no)
-front leaf springs and bushings are new, although i suppose its possible to have a bad bushing already
-removed traction bars and drove
-removed front track bar and drove, but going to try this again.
-all cab mounts look ok
-took out cab mount under drivers foot, and cut down the metal piece a little...read about it on another thread on here. no change
-made sure my gooseneck ball couldn't rattle
-steering box is new...thought that was it
-steering shaft is solid
-transmission mount bushing and crossmember feel tight
-lubed front driveshaft slip joint and it doesn't have any u joint play
-rear shocks seem ok but haven't removed them yet
-fuel tank is solid
-rear driveshaft has new carrier bearing and u joints, all is tight
-exhaust is not hitting anything
-u bolts all tight, spring bolts are tight
As you can see, I've been through damn near everything. my only thoughts right now is a possible bad cab bushing, or bad leaf spring bushing...as it sounds like its right under my feet. and when you flex the truck, it makes all sort of popping and clunking noises. i had the truck on my buddies lift and we went under it for an hour yesterday looking around with no luck. only thing i found was a bad traction bar bushing but we removed them and it still does it..
Most noticeable at the end of the video...it sounds exactly like a bad sway bar bushing but that's not it...

I have a clunking noise from the right front suspension when going over bumps. I've replaced the Strut bushings that were collapsed, the control arm bushings that had play and the noise is still there. There is no play in the links. There is a slight noise in the sway bar bushings when struck with a rubber mallet. I hate to keep replacing parts chasing down this noise.

View 13 RepliesI need to replace the rubber axle bumper guards. I have a clunking noise from the left front going over bumps. Troubleshooting I found the left front axle bumper guard is missing, right side is missing chunks and dry rotted. I had a question about how they attach. The one that is missing looks like a rusted bolt snapped off. Is it safe to assume a bolt goes right thru the center of the bumper guard into the frame? Couldn't tell on the right side it is in bad shape. Right front bolt may have sheared off on the bottom and just held in on the top by what is left.

Its especially bad if I drive over cobblestone or on a dirt road. Could this be the CV joint? Ball Joint? How can I tell what it is?
View 4 Replies'01 Taurus with an occasional rattle/clunking sound coming from the front end when going over bumps. Took it to the local shopping center auto. service dept. (probably 1st mistake I know) They say the only thing they could find was the RH CV boot was bad and was probably the source of the noise. Doesn't sound right to me since the boot is rubber and what I hear is more of a metal sound..what I was thinking possibly a suspension link or tie rod end. I know what a bad cv JOINT sounds like and it's nothing like this. Now if the CV boot is bad I don't mind to replace it, but I don't want to spend the money if it is not going to solve the problem. I've never heard of a boot making noise before.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2013 Elantra GLS and from the day I got it, I've felt like the suspension/shocks are just terrible when it comes to speed bumps. In my apartment complex I have to slow to 5 MPH whereas in a friend's Focus, Accord, and 200C I can ride over them at 20MPH no problem. The speed bumps are pretty small and nothing special. The car seems fine with potholes that sink into the ground but poor with bumps that rise out of the ground. Is it just me? Do the stock Hankook tires have anything to do with it?
View 16 RepliesPicked up my brand new 2013 Elantra 2 nights ago. 51 Km's on it when I drove it off the lot. Immediately noticed it was making a very loud noise whenever I hit any road bumps, potholes, sewers, train tracks, etc.
I can't tell if it is coming from the front, or back of the car. Many of the threads on here seem to be talking about a common rear shocks issue? Also read a lot about faulty struts? Swaybar?
I bought a 2000 F250 V10 Super Cab. Oddly after a few weeks it has grown on me. There has been a clunking noise out of the right front over bumps. I traced it to a bad axle bearing. The u joint moves up and down about a 1/2 inch. Besides pulling the hub/bearing assembly out and removing the axle are there any surprises getting the old bearing out?
View 1 RepliesI had the front struts replaced. I looked at the strut diagram and replaced most of the parts associated with the front struts. The rear shocks were also replaced. New brakes were installed on the front and rear. The front rotors were replaced. Mileage 124000 miles.
I thought this would might solve the squeaking when I went over a speed bump in the parking lot. It did not. How to fix the squeaking.
When I drive over a bump or the car goes over a dip at speed, there is clunking sound from the front end. It seems to be much more noticeable in this cold weather, hence my current concern. I have not looked into it at all. I live on a bumpy dirt road, so the front end gets a workout.
The car has 39,800 miles. So the 40k is almost here, and the 4 years is almost here as well so I cannot just not drive the car for a while.
But if I can get a common problem fixed under warranty, I will take the time tomorrow to deal with this. The other weird thing in this cold snap is that the VW never seems to get to 190 deg, like it usually does (middle of temp gauge), it will be a few notches below. Normal situation? It will go back to 190 if I turn off the heat and drive a bit harder, but with the heat blasting (baby in car) and very mellow driving, it doesn't quite make it...
2010 VW Passat - Sedan
See the attached videos. The first one (night time) was made before I took the car to the dealer the first time. Dealer said that I was going too fast over the speed bumps, so I made another video (daytime) showing the speed (10-13 mph). Both times you can hear a squeaking noise coming from the front that I just started hearing last week. The car has only 23,000 miles on it. I bought it brand new back in September of 2010. I don't know what to do because the dealer (of course) says that they checked everything and there is nothing wrong with the car.
What was the cause of it. I can take it to a mechanic and check it myself and then bring it to VW for repairs and telling them exactly what's wrong and why.

I have a 2005 Explorer XLT Sport 4x4 w/ 118k miles. I am having front end noise when I go over speed bumps, driveway aprons, etc.
I already replaced the Struts/Coils, and ball joints, the sway bar end links are newer. The noise is almost like a noise an old spring mattress would make.
What could the issue be?
I have had some clunking in the front end for a couple months now. It is intermittent and seems to show up mostly in cold weather at startup. It is still there in warmer weather, but it is much harder to replicate and occurs less. Sometimes it also sounds like the dash is rattling. I have felt around on the dash while the noise is present, and nothing appears to be vibrating. Once the car warms up, issues seem to go away. I have taken it to the dealership which cannot find a problem, and I have not been able to replicate the issue for them. Sway bar links have been replaced due to being worn out, but did not fix the above issue.
