Elantra GD (2013+) :: Acceleration Noise When Engine Is Under Any Load
May 11, 2015
The sound is only there when the engine is under any load. If I am very careful I can raise through the RPM without the noise, but give it a little bit more gas and there it is. It sounds kind of like an exhaust leak, but I'm not sure.

Listen closely right at 0:12-0:15. That is me accelerating for 3 seconds, and that sound like a rain stick is my engine.

Brand new 2015 1.8l. Under load (up steep hill) engine making a rattling noise. Sounded a little like a bad bearing. Lifted hood and listened in driveway immediately after and noise seems to be coming from valve train (not ideal test as it doesn't emulate load). This is a noise that's developed in the last few miles, not from get go. It only occurs when engine is fully warmed up and under load.

2013 Elantra manual. 60,xxxkm, owned from new, purchased in August 2013. Oil changes always done within 5-7000km. Was 2000km over my oil change due date when this happened (haven't had time to get it done, been driving my motorcycle mostly). Driving around today I dropped my wife off, then I heard a quiet ticking noise under very light acceleration.
The noise would go away under normal acceleration, no noise while revving, and no noise while engine braking. The noise got worse after about 5km. I was in traffic and engaged the clutch into first gear, the car stalled violently. Turning the key results in a click, then nothing. In 1st gear the car will not roll forward. In reverse the car will not roll back. It still rolls in neutral. Had it towed to my local Hyundai dealer and got a rental. Waiting on the results.
Never saw a drop of oil on the ground while parked, and never smelt any oil burning. I run between 87 and 91 octane, whichever is available. I have the extended 160,000km 8yr warranty, hopefully this is covered as I still owe about 15g's on the car.

I have 93 GT-S, AT, 2.2, 163,000 miles.
My problem is slow acceleration. As I get on the highway and give it the gas my car slowly climbs to my travel speed at 75 mph. She will climb steady at around 3000-3100 rpm. When I punch it the car revs to approx. 4000 rpm but then quickly drops back to 3000 without me letting off the gas. Almost sounds like its bogging down. Another thing I noticed while cruising at around 65 mph is that the car bucks a little but I don't hear any misfiring. Also, when I do step on the gas, the car is severely louder. Almost sounds like it's coming from under the hood. I tried parking it, opening the hood, and listened to the engine while giving her the gas but she sounds much quieter. So the louder noise seems to happen under load. Please note there is no check engine light.
Is this one issue or possibly multiple issues? Could my TPS be an issue here as well?

My brother who owns a 2003 Passat that is experiencing a chatter or more like a ticking noise upon acceleration while turning. It only does it under load and has gotten progressively worse. To me it feels like a CV Joint although over cobblestones there is vibration in the front rack as if something is loose in the suspension. It only happens on turning and not under hard straightaway acceleration. What are the best places to check for problems tomorrow when I jack it up? The noise is a fast paced creaking tick.

Weird noise I am hearing with my mothers new Elantra she just picked up. When starting engine has a knocking noise, not kinding. Letting motor run for a few minutes it goes away but is concerning. I was wondering if there is an issue with the MPFI engine which i believe is new this year which replaced the GDI engine. Definitely does not sound normal to me. to me it sounds like a rode knock or hydro lifter issue. Are these engines known for this. My mother traded her 2012 civic for this with 4500 miles. She did not like the seats and dash board layout in it and we got a good deal on this car.

My car has the wavy acceleration feel and sometimes hesitates a bit. It is way worse when the a/c is on. I wonder if this is a octane or spark plug issue. On my old cruze 1.4t the gap was wrong from the factory. It came with all four gaped under .022 but the manual called for .028. Everyone gaped to .035 with great results. Checking the spark plugs?

I have a 2013 GT and my wife a 2011 sedan.
[URL] .....
I've looked it up and didn't find any reports of it happening to the GT. (I admit I didn't look too hard!)
It happened to my wife's 2011 sedan when accelerating onto the highway. Just as described in the "massive smoke" thread. I couldn't see the car following behind me, the smoke was that bad. No exaggerating!
-- no check engine light
-- no change in temp
-- car drove fine immediately afterward (we babied it till we got home)
-- oil level and colour OK
-- coolant OK (overflow between lines)
-- next day car felt fine during full-throttle 80-120 km/h acceleration.
-- mentioned it at dealership, with service adviser, service manager and mechanic all listening to the story. They were stumped but offered to look at it. Adviser suggested a "BG Products fuel induction" treatment, which I'm assuming is bogus. (Haven't had a chance to check into it)
My web searching suggests the car had a "carbon blowout" cuz my wife rarely drives on the highway. I've heard of this but always thought it was just a myth. I mean, seriously, have you ever actually seen a car throw up a James Bond smokescreen just cuz it hadn't been driven hard? I'll betcha five bucks that if I took my mom's babied 1997 Camry onto the highway and floored it, nothing would happen. So what's up with the Elantra?

Loving our new SF, but have noticed a problem periodically when starting out from a dead stop. When the accelerator is pushed, sometimes there is a hesitation in the engine. Almost feels like the gas has been restricted for a second, then it engages and goes. I've notified the dealer and plan to have them look into it at my first oil change, but it is happening more frequently and think it may be something I need to get looked at sooner than later.

For the last few weeks (about a month) I have been experiencing a clunking noise/ knock on acceleration coming from either in front of my feet or below my feet (drivers side) ONLY on acceleration and only then from a full stop. I can also feel the clunk as well which leads me to believe it is a transmission mount.....maybe an engine mount. I am taking her to the dealer after work today. we had some very cold weather and I was hoping it was just ice but yesterday and today were well above zero and it is still there and it is EVERY time I accelerate. Which is a somewhat good thing since I will be able to replicate the problem for Hyundai.....

2013 Prius 3 making a squealing or rattling noise when accelerating after car is warmed up. It only does it when the car is up to temperature and when you accelerate slightly harder, like going up a hill or something. It sounds like a pulley or something squealing. It has been to the dealer and of course they couldn't duplicate the noise or see anything wrong. Not to sound funny, but it actually sounds like a hamster running on a wheel. It is very annoying. It is not a constant noise, it only happens under load. It gets louder when the ac is on as well. If you let off the accelerator when it starts the noise goes away. I don't know of it matters but our car has the forged 17" wheels on it from the factory, and the car has 8600 miles on it.

After a road trip (approximately) 80km both ways, I came back to my home area and filled up and got a car wash. Then I went home. About 2 hours after I noticed the car felt very jerky, and had no acceleration. Then big time sputtering. I turned off the car and waited for it to cool down. Once cool, it just kept on cranking. It started at one point and the engine light came on. And now it only cranks.

I have a 2015 GS350 F Sport (RWD). A clicking noise occurs during braking and acceleration, but only sporadically. It seems to occur more often during heavy breaking and/or acceleration. The sound seems to be coming from the driver's side A-pillar or the driver's side dash at any rate. Sometimes the sound is a single click and sometimes it clicks up to 3 times.

On a recent snowy drive from Chicago back home to Detroit, our 2013 Dodge Journey (6 cylinder AWD) started to make a screeching sound. My husband said it sounded like a belt. The sound would come and go. Due to the snow we were not able to go much over 45mph on the hwy. About 30 min after hearing the noise the first time, the car all of a sudden lost almost all acceleration. Not great when you are in the middle lane in snowy weather. We were able to get to the shoulder. After letting the car idle for a short time (3-4 min) in park and stepping on the gas peddle while in park, we took off again.
As long as we kept our speed 45-55mph for a short time the car would started to drive normal for 45-60 min, until it would happen again. One time we did not let the car rest for the normal 3-4 min and we were back on the shoulder again within a few min. The only warning light that came on once and then went out was the "check AWD" we have only driven the car locally a couple of times since, I was planning to take it to the Dodge dealership later this week. I fear this is a problem that is hard to duplicate, however this also concerns me as I normally drive a lot for work and often have several kids in my car on weekends.

I have a '07 Sonata GLS with the 2.4-liter Theta engine and the 4-speed automatic. It has 52k miles on it and has always been serviced regularly. It's been a pretty decent car but is starting to feel a little tired, most notably the worn/bouncy suspension.
Anyway, the other day I was driving down the highway and gave it a little gas to pass a slower car. Doing 60 MPH it downshifted to 3rd (~2000 to ~3300 RPM) and I thought I heard a noise in the engine bay, but I wasn't sure. I ended up needing more power so put it to the floor and as it kicked down to 2nd at ~5000 RPM the rattly noise got a lot more pronounced. Driving around normally I don't hear it but any time I put it to the floor (merging/passing) I will hear the rattle. I can also hear it if I lock it in 2nd gear and give it full throttle up a hill at low speed, like you might do with a stick shift.
It seems like it only does it under load because if I rev it to ~4000 RPM in park in the driveway, there's no noise, even at full throttle. I know the V6s had tensioner issues but I haven't heard much about the 2.4s. I'm not super concerned as it is still under warranty but what might be wrong with it as this is my first Hyundai vehicle, especially in case the dealer can't replicate it.

To get straight to the point: I have a 2013 GTI that has recently started making a screeching noise on cold starts and during engine acceleration (not necessarily heavy load, but actual engine speed acceleration).
I recorded a video of it this morning and it is very easy to discern the sound. The car is APR stage 1 tuned and has a south bend clutch but I don't think either of those are related to the sound. The water pump has been replaced from the service bulletin, the auxiliary belt tensioner has been replaced because it started to make a noise (this noise is completely different). Otherwise the car has never given me an issue, it has been maintained exactly per the OEM repair schedule other then oil changes every 5k miles vs. 10k. I use mobil 1 0W-40 oil.

In my attempts to get good MPG (Avg 37.5) on my 2013 ES 300h, I drive in the "economy" mode and try not to ever accelerate hard from a stop. I've noticed lately that I am getting a slight pinging when I accelerate from a stop going up a hill. Is that the "sound of economy" I am hearing? I use Costco regular and service the car regularly (in fact I've changed the oil twice already in the 15K I've owned it Just wondering if any other es300h owners are experiencing similar problems. Maybe I should try drive in Normal or Power mode to see if it changes..?

I have an engine noise on my 2000 Dodge Caravan with the 3.3 engine. It sounds a lot like the grinding of a rotating part. It occurs at start up, momentarily, then goes away. If I drop it in gear and start doing low speed maneuvering in the driveway, it comes back. If I turn on the AC it comes back. In all cases, the noise goes away at around 1200 rpm.
The noise occurs again, when I shut the engine down. The engine performs and runs smooth and normal otherwise. No stalling, stumbling, or bad gas mileage to report.
I can "feel" the noise with my hand, when I put my hand on the ac compressor bracket, or the intake manifold, or the valve cover. I've tried the listening through the stick method, and it seems to be coming from the front area of the engine. But I can't be sure. It is something internal. Let me describe:
I thought it was my AC compressor or clutch going bad. The fact that my AC had stopped working well, and was making jet engine noises at high rpm supported me decide this. I replaced the compressor. The AC works great now, and the jet engine noises went away. But the grinding noise is still there. As described.
I wishfully thought it was the belt tensioner or idler pulley. I replaced both of those. Noise still was there. I pulled off the serpentine belt, and started the engine. It made the noise, very briefly as it started, then went away completely. It made the noise again briefly as I shut the motor off. So it's still there without any of the accessories turning.
The noise is loud and obnoxious at idle when under load. It just can't be good. I've read theories about similar sounding problems, saying they could be loose timing chain, bad oil pump, slapping pistons, crank journals, flexplate/flywheels cracked.
I'm going to try doing an oil system flush, and then I'll change it out with a little thicker oil. See if that makes any difference in the noise. Currently I'm running 5w-30 Mobile 1. I think. I'll let you know if it changes anything. I'm also thinking I want to make a short video of the car idling and making the noise for my video camera. I'll post that on youtube and link it here.

I have a 2004 Toyota Matrix, 5 spd manual with 175,000 miles. It's been a great car, but about 4 months ago I noticed more noise than usual from the engine compartment. It sounds like someone dropped a noisy diesel engine in there! The noise is most noticeable on the highway when the engine is under greater load (e.g. up hill). The dealer told me it's the belt tensioner. I had that replaced, but the noise is still there, and it's getting worse. I recently had the car completely serviced, full tune up, transmission fluid changed, etc.

I usually drive with front defogger on because for some reason our Elantra GT like to fog. When I shut the car off, usually there's the normal sound of some vent or air dam closing. Well, there's a new noise while doing it; it seems like it's struggling to close and making a tap-tap-tap noise. I'm not talking about the normal electrical tapping noise when you shut the car off. It sounds like coming from the driver-side dash.
