Corolla / Matrix 2009-13 :: Fuel Gauge And Distance To Empty Accuracy
Dec 11, 2013
I had a 2006 Corolla S 1.8L automatic with 232,000+ miles that was taken away too early by two other cars making a sandwich out of it. It was still getting 32 -37 mpg consistently and about 370 - 390 miles per tank at least before I'd look for gas. I just replaced it with a '13 Corolla S 1.8L automatic and average out near 28 - 32 mpg (but it's winter). My issue is the readout on the gauges. I've got a 120 mile round trip for work daily (all highway). On the way home yesterday, gauge showed 1/4 tank and distance said 85 miles (enough to get home).
At about 26 miles left, yellow light came on. At gas station 19 miles left til empty (or so I thought), yellow light shut off and gas gauge went back up slightly off E. Filled her up and it only took 10.2 gallons after topping it off a couple times after the pump shut off. Distance traveled was about 320 miles on that tank so around 32 mpg. I'm o.k. with that but I thought these had the 13 gallon tank like my '06? Were there still 3 gallons in there and the sending unit may be bad or am I missing something? BTW car only has about 6600 miles on it as of right now.

I just filled up my gas tank and when I turned on my car the gas light turned on and the needle read empty. But before I put gas, the gas light wasn't on yet and. Was at 1/4 of a tank. Maybe I filled it up too much and it'll resolve itself after the gas goes down?
It's a 10.5 if it matters.

Just wondering about the "miles to empty meter", should I disregard it when I have high mpg? (50-60 mpg)

I am having some issues with the distance to empty gauge. Every time I've filled up the car it has say approx. 550 miles (when tank is completely full)..

This has been happening consistently where the trip gauge on low fuel goes from 40miles to zero mile in a matter of seconds. I've never seen where it goes through the gradual process 30->20>10 > 0.

I went in for an oil change. The following day my ABS and brake light came on. I looked under the hood and the brake fluid was totally empty! I called the place back and said "Don't you check fluids? It's bone dry".. well maybe bone dry is not totally true, it might have been lubricated in the reservoir still, but definitely empty. I put fluid in and the light is still on.
So, I went back. They say problem with my rear ABS speed sensor. After doing some Google work on my cell, I thought it was expensive so I'm going elsewhere.
I've got 100,500 miles so I'll probably get spark plugs also.
But anyway, they did that oil change and at the same told me my transmission fluid is dark. I'm just wondering if I should be worried about doing a transmission flush and fill.. I hear conflicting stories from all over the web.. one place says this, one says that, one says this type of oil is best, etc...

I have a 2009 Sonata SE 3.3 with about 35,000miles. I am the second owner.
I believe that my gas gauge or the sending unit in the tank is bad. The gauge will show empty when the tank has fuel and then it will sometimes read normal.

I filled up for the first time yesterday after driving 1,039 miles. I had almost forgotten how to do it. Anyways, the reason I thought I needed to fill up was that the gas gauge was down to one bar. However I was only able to add 8.3 gallons. I thought 1 bar=1 gal but that turned out to be inaccurate.

2009 Corolla XLE. 88K miles. My Corolla hadn't been driven for almost a week. This morning the car wouldn't start. Upon turning the ignition key, there was no clicking though. I tried to jump start it multiple times with no success. I thought maybe I am doing something wrong with the jump start.
Called Roadside assistance. The guy had me try to start it once and kind of figured out what was wrong. He started the car and pumped the gas at the same. The car started. He said the vehicle is fuel injected since it has been sitting at the same spot for almost a week. He suggested I should let it run for sometime. Its pretty cold here today (~35F real feel). Since this happened, I started the car multiple times throughout the day without pumping the gas and it did start without any issue.
I am pretty sure its not normal for this car as I never had to do this before. Is there something wrong with the car? Do I need to take the car to the mechanic and have it checked? What should I expect in terms of any mechanical repairs? I dont want to get stranded somewhere and would like to get it fixed.

I just bought a 2010 corolla xrs. I'm wondering what type of fuel it actually requires. The manual said 87+ octane but everywhere that I read online is saying premium is the way to go for max performance. Is this true??

My friend was told by Toyota that the Air Fuel Sensor code was the reason why her 2010 Corolla VSC and engine lights were on. This was after she visited her mechanic who changed the O2 sensor.
Is there a way to change the Air fuel sensor herself without having to pay Toyota...

I bought a 2013 XLT 4X4 wiht 5.0 V8 about 3 months ago. I reset the computer when I first bought it and it shows an average of 15.7 MPG. I have also kept records of all fuel purchased and my actual mileage is 15.2 MPG.

I have a 2004 F150 XLT 5.4 L 79,000 miles. Yesterday i was driving home turned a corner and the low fuel light came on and the fuel gauge is well below empty. I had approx 1/2 tank of fuel when it happened. I have since filled tank all the way but the gauge will not move and low fuel light stays on. Everything else is working fine! I have never run the truck low enough on fuel to make the dummy light come on.....

My son has a 09 Vibe 1.8L automatic and it won't start. Among other things, I also I want to check to see if it has spark and fuel pressure.
First of all, can I check for spark by looking at the signals into the coil packs? I realize that this won't actually tell me if there is spark at the plugs, but I'd like to know if the ECU is commanding spark or not. One of the coil packs was replaced a couple of months ago, so I'm fairly confident that it is OK. And it's hard to believe that all of the rest of them would suddenly have a problem.
As far as the fuel pressure is concerned, I don't see a valve on the fuel rail to connect a standard fuel pressure gauge. I'm assuming that I need to some how tap a gauge into the rubber supply line, prior to the metal line going to the fuel rail, but I'm not sure this is the recommended way.

Problem: Fuel tank near empty and the gauge (appropriately) reads near empty. I pull into a gas station and fill up. In spite of a full tank, the fuel gauge is still near empty and the warning light/chime is still on. I turned the car off and restarted it several times but no change.
I can't recall any and could not find any reference in the table of contents.

When my fuel gauge gets to 3/4s full it stops working and goes to empty. My range display also goes off. When I refill it works again until it reaches the same point.

I have owned the car for about three weeks and I have noticed that the fuel gauge will sometimes go to empty or should I say will not go up to the fuel that is in the car... It always stays empty... At E, why? I have tried tightening the fuel cap for multiple times. What kind of parts should I replace from Sewell?

My 2006 Prius has 165,000 miles. I haven't had any major issues but twice in the last 2 weeks, I've had my fuel gauge go from low (2-3 bars), to one bar, to having the "add fuel" message in less than a half hour. The second time I actually did run out of gas so it's not just that the gauge is faulty. When I ran out of gas, my battery also appeared on it's last bar. After putting gas in it, the car ran fine and the battery perked up. The only recent maintenance was break pad and disk replacements but I've not noticed any drag or difficulty braking.

Today I noticed an anomaly with the fuel gauge in my 2010 TDI Golf. While driving along the fuel gauge dropped down to empty. But there were no other indicators and the engine kept running. I had filled up with diesel about 10 miles prior and had stopped and started the car a couple of times since. I went on to my next stop (after another 4 miles or so) and then restarted the car with no issues and the fuel gauge was back to normal.
