Corolla :: 2000 - Tapping Noise With Acceleration
Sep 30, 2013
My son's 2000 Corolla was making a loud tapping noise with acceleration and was losing power. He pulled over and shut it off. The car wouldn't start after that.

View 2 RepliesWhen the engine is fully warmed up no heater on, after driving about 7-8 miles in city my engine would make a fluttering/tapping noise between 1900-2700rpm at 5-30mph during light acceleration. its rotational noise definitely from engine. noise is light, to hear it all windows has to be up. noise can be heard when powerbraking as well
i had taken it to hayward toyota, dublin toyota and fremont toyota total about 4-5 times. some would lie to my face saying they cant hear the noise, some would say its normal. i used to be a mechanic now im a service advisor at nissan. always had confident in toyota bought 2 of them at the end of 2013 before i started working at nissan.
I had my shopforeman looked at it couldnt figure it out. had my master tech looked at it couldnt figure it out. both informed me this has to be looked at by a toyota mechanic to see if this is an issue they had ran into before or call a toyota engineer.
I just recently acquired a 2000 Isuzu rodeo. The last owner said their girlfriend drove it with low oil, and it damaged the engine. On starting the car, there is a somewhat loud clicking/tapping noise from the engine. It speeds up if you step on the gas, and seemed to be louder with the camshaft cover off. I believe it to be an issue with a valve or cam or some other part in the head, but the person I am working ont his car with thinks the problem lies in the lower end, and wants to rebuild that.
View 1 RepliesI've got a 2001 Accent 1.5 liter 5 speed. Car has 105,500 miles. Whenever the car is running, it makes an irritating tapping noise somewhere on the left side of the motor. I've been told that it sounds like the timing belt, but the car runs perfectly, doesn't miss. The tapping used to go away 30 seconds to a minute after starting it, but now it's constantly there and slightly louder. The noise goes with the rpms. When the rpms are higher, the tapping is faster. I've also noticed some loss of power. I recently added some octane booster to the fuel but noticed no difference. My uncle told me it may be a main bearing starting to go out but the tapping does not have a metallic tone of any.
View 3 Replies I have a 2002 Corolla with about 180,000 miles that has been well maintained, but I know very little about cars.
Over the past months, I've noticed the engine noise on acceleration sounds a bit louder than I would expect it to, and it seems to be getting louder over time. It's slow changing, so I'm a little unsure. And occasionally I wonder if I don't hear a sound that shouldn't be there, though I couldn't describe it yet. Mechanic said the acceleration noise is normal at start-up for older cars until they get warm, but this happens even after I've been driving a while. Worth the $100 for an engine checkup?
Also, the A/C doesn't seem to be the strongest and has a high pitch noise when I run it. Normal?
My 2001 Corolla w/80k developing a considerably loud spark knock/engine pinging noise under acceleration. It throws no codes but pings like crazy and it never used to. It's happened gradual over a long period of time. I've cleaned the throttle body and have done all regular tune up items with no improvement. It doesn't ping at all on 93 octane, does some on 89 and terribly so on 87. Why is this? Does the 93 octane just act a a richer mixture of fuel to alleviate the ping? Should this sign point me in the direction that it's definately a lean issue causing the pinging?
View 13 Replies2004 Buick Century. 3100 motor. 150k miles... Recently discovered strange noise but not sure exactly how long its been happening. (I listen to the radio pretty loud)
Engine sounds normal at start/idle (hot and cold). During acceleration I hear a constant ticking/tapping/clattering at a decent volume from 1st to 3rd..after 3rd it quiets down a bit but still constant. It goes away completely directly after shifting into 4th. I then cruise down the highway at 75-80 with no problem whatsoever.(It can also be heard if i rev the engine in park.)
The day I noticed it i immediately checked the oil. It was a little over a quart low. I filled it but the sound has not changed.
I wouldn't say its a full on knock but it does sound alarming like the engine could blow at any moment from 1st to 4th. Sounds perfectly fine after that.
Ok, so I just drove from Pgh, PA to San Antonio, TX..... truck ran great, and before i left i replaced the steering box, tie rod ends, shocks, added dual steering stabilizers, and did a tranny flush as well as oil change.
Here are the issues that I cant figure out, anytime i turn the wheel, there is a squealing, it is NOT the power steering, when we did all the upgrades we re-greased the ball joints and temporarily stopped the squealing. So should I just replace the ball joints, and if so, should I replace anything else while I'm doing that?
The next issue is when i drive, sometimes when I accelerate slightly it sounds like something is going wrong with the engine, like a vibration or humming, maybe a slight tapping, i cant seem to figure it out. no engine lights come on or anything, but it scares me and I need this vehicle for a while so I need to make sure i keep up on the maintenance.
I bought a use 2009 Matrix S 2.4L (2AZ-FE) with about 81000 miles on it. when the car is at idle i hear a light tapping sound on the passenger side. It sounds like the engine but am not sure what it might be. What is causing the tapping sound and how to fix it? (i saw some ppl post about the OCV.) The car also has a light vibration when am at a stop n in gear. Its annoying because i bought a car not a tractor.
View 6 RepliesI have a 2000 Passat GLX 2.8 V6 w/ trip that makes a "clunk" noise just upon acceleration. I did a search for this and it seems like this has been asked before about the 4 motion cars but never on a non 4 motion car. It only happens when I hit the gas...
View 5 RepliesI have a 2011 Corolla S with approximately 11,500 miles. It has been regularly serviced at a Toyota dealership. The oil level is checked regularly and is full. Today I heard a slight but noticeable tapping sound when the motor is in the 1800-2100 rpm range. it is quiet throughout the rest of the engine's power band. Could this be a serious problem in the making?
View 6 RepliesI have a 07 Hyundai sonata that has a rattling noise only during acceleration and only at just under 2000 rpm's. I went to a mechanic who checked the heat shields and exhaust only to tell me it was in the transaxel and sent me to a transmission shop. the transmission shop told me they think its the hydraulic lifters, and sent me elsewhere.
View 1 RepliesI am original owner of a 2000 CRV, it's in really good shape and has been maintained by me on about 99% of all repairs it has 140k total. I have this thumping noise coming through the floorboard by my feet, under moderate acceleration and it goes away at just about any speed when you quit accelerating. Sounded like a bad halfshaft, I had already replaced one so I did the other side, got worse. So I replaced the one that had been in for just 2 years--no better. Asked the auto parts store for a recommendation and went to that shop, they balanced the tires, checked rotors and concluded I was buying junky rebuild half shafts. I had them replace the one they thought was bad with another rebuild, just as bad or worse...
I took home and put in both sides with new halfshafts, I also noticed some play in jackshaft bearing and replaced that as well....no better. Shop claims that a website they subscribe to says that 50% of aftermarket halfshafts for CRV are no good. But honestly we are 5 for 5 bad, last two were new from NAPA. Pulled things apart and checked wheel bearings left side was sticky so had machine shop press one into the knuckle, right side was done about 14 months ago. Also disconnected drive line and drove it as a 2 wheel drive vehicle....no better. Would a broken tire belt only make noise on acceleration or after a corner when you accelerate? Is this a possible indication of my transaxle going out? ---
I have a 2000 Hyundai accent. Bought the car used at a lien sale over 3 years ago, with about 120k miles on it... it now has over 197k miles on it. I have changed the oil and filter religiously since I bought it, using Castrol GTX High mileage 5w30 synthetic motor oil. I have also (in the last year) replaced the plugs with platinum plugs, the plug wires, and the air filter. A the car has always made a tapping sound when idling since I bought it, but recently (in the last week), it makes little shoemaker sounds when I accelerate. I used to associate this with detonation and adjust timing (back in the day when you could put a timing light on a car and turn the distributor to set timing). Since timing is now controlled by the computer in the car, am I right in assuming that I need to replace the timing belt?
View 4 RepliesI own a 2001 Accent 1.6, auto. 150,000 well-taken-care-of miles. New plugs/wires/timing belt/coolant flush 10,000 miles ago. Most recent oil change was with Shell Rotella T5 (I believe 10w-30 blend) and Purolator PureOne filter, 4-5,000 miles ago. It does not burn any oil, and runs very well. It has never been low on oil, revved high, or abused in the 10,000 miles I've owned it (except an ebrake u-turn on a dirt road to scare the wife )
The engine has always had a mild tick when cold, that goes away within about 30 seconds. Normal, from what I could tell. Also, it has always had a tick from roughly 1500-idle when releasing the gas, in neutral. Again, seems fairly normal for a little engine, I figured just some valve noise.
This morning I started the car (sat overnight) and it idled a bit rough for about 20 seconds, and I noticed that the ticking from before was now closer to a knocking/tapping, nowhere NEAR the horribleness of a spun rod on my WRX . But it was still a bit alarming. It never really quieted down, but as I rev, the sound goes away completely above 2k, and the flutter when I release the throttle is louder than before.
I've noticed a strange tapping noise behind the dash, it is irregular and literally sounds like someone is tapping on something. The noise is dull, somewhat plastic sounding, and short. I've only noticed it when I am driving around with the windows up and the air off, but it could be happening all the time but I just can't hear it. And again to reiterate, it comes and goes and the pattern is very irregular.

Not my car in the link but it sounds very similar (can be heard better 4 seconds into the video). Noise only under load, in Drive and in Park, does not go away when warm. Definitely coming from cylinder 4 after removing spark from each cylinder to test. 152k miles. Drives excellent, no loss of power, no vibrations, no codes. Just purchased car. In excellent condition and price was right, so decided not to pass on it. I'm also in the auto repair field, so fixes dont cost me an arm and a leg
Would too much cam lobe clearance cause this loud of a noise? and would valvetrain issues cause a noise only under load? I just read on the complexity of doing a valve adjustment on these engines. Removed the valve cover and saw nothing abnormal or no significant signs of wear
Any other common taps/knocks/noises associated with the 2AZFE?
This is my first ownership of a vehicle with the 2.4, and am surprised to see all the reports of failed engines and at not even very high miles. I thought it was more reliable.
Looking for info on reseating the valves on a 2004 camry four cylinder. My car has 95000 miles on it right now and you can hear the valves tapping I guess making noise .
View 14 RepliesI presume it to be possibly a blend door actuator/switch. It does not happen all the time, when it does I have simply shut down the hvac and it stops.
View 1 RepliesIn my 2007 toyota camry, 4 cyl, W/ 120K miles, I have loud tapping noise while the A/C is on. Noise is only heard when the car is idling or when coming to a stop light. No noise when A/C is off.
Its sounds like the tapping noise is coming from top end of the engine. Engine shakes also while noise is present.
To me it sounds like piston slap which I am going to try to isolate it by running high octan gas. Personally I don't think its piston slap.
Maintenance stuff done: ireduim spark plugs, air/ cabin filter, drive belt, water pump @ 60K, oil change every 5K.
Problem 2: Also is there any fix for Radio AUX noise in speakers beside Toyota TSB on it. Getting electrical noise in the speakers through cellphone when its charging through car power outlet.
My car ( 2.4L 2008 Camry ) is making a tapping noise while in gear and stopped. If I rev it slightly, start moving, or move it out of gear the noise will go away.
I was able to trace the noise to the hard pipes attached to the radiator for the transmission cooler. In particular the ~6in one that runs towards the center of the radiator.
A part of the body directly below the hard pipe was slightly bent up and hitting the hard pipe.
A quick way to verify this is the root cause of your noise is by getting a buddy (or chocking) the wheels with parking brake engaged then put the car in gear and manipulate the radiator. Be very careful when doing this I am not responsible for property damage or bodily harm due to this troubleshooting technique.
Pressing down on the top rubber isolators or putting some pressure on the fan shroud should stop the tapping noise.
On my car I persuaded the metal and added some foam strips to prevent to noise. If I press down on the radiator it sometimes will comes back. If this bothers me more I will need to pull the radiator and do a more thorough examination.
