Chrysler - Towncountry :: Squeaky Steering Wheel / Column When Making Turns
Apr 4, 2014
I have a 2005 Chrysler Town & Country base model with just over 70,000 miles.
My steering wheel/column "squeaks" when making left or right turns. The noise sounds like it is coming from inside the cabin, just behind the airbag/horn. It does not sound like a typical power steering problem. The sound is more noticeable when I make left turns and when I am driving slowly, like when I am turning the wheel of the car to get out of a parking space. The noise is definitely worse in colder weather.
I had the inner tie rods replaced three months ago, but I think the creaking sound pre-dates that work. Are there bearings or joints that might need lubrication. Something else?

Sometimes my steering wheel squeaks. It sounds like plastic rubbing against plastic. The first dealership said the compartment under the steering wheel was rubbing against the column or something inside and that they made an adjustment and the sound stopped. It didn't. The second dealership told me they couldn't figure it out unless they heard the sound. Since it's not every time I drive, sure enough it made no noise at the dealership that day. The head of the shop looked into it and couldn't figure it out. He dry-lubed behind the steering wheel to get to a spring back there. He did the same for where the steering column comes into the car at the bottom of the car. Good for a few days. Squeaking back today.

I have a 2003 Camry 'SE Automatic with almost 18,000 miles - that's right, low mileage. This week the steering wheel started making squeaky noises when I turn it. It doesn't matter which way I turn, it will squeak and it doesn't happen all the time. Should I be worried and what can I do about it?
NOTE: This started happening the day after we had got an 1 or 2 of snow. That morning when I opened the door to get the brush/scraper and little snow fell in the driver's side of the car. Perhaps a little fell on the steering wheel.

On left turns, even just slight left turn, but mostly when weather is humid, I get a loud squeal that sounds exactly like squealing brakes, except I am not applying brakes. May not be relevant, but this is a minivan modified for wheelchair access via a ramp that comes out on the passenger side.

My 96 Town and Country won't start. It turns over and fires for about 1-2 seconds max. After that it only turns over, no fire. The key sign/symptom is that the odometer and PRNL do not light up. This is very sporadic. Sometimes months and months apart. I unhook the battery in an effort to reset the computer. Sometimes it works in 1/2 hr. Sometimes several hours. So I don't think it resets but I still do it anyway. I have replaced the computer but no luck. Could it somehow be the dash cluster?

I am about an hour and a half from home at my cousins when my oil light came on. It only comes on when I have come to a complete stop. Once I accelerate it goes away. I checked the dipstick and it is full. Here is my question: what do you think this could be and would it be safe to drive home to my trusted mechanic. The car has 160,000 miles on it.

I have a 2000 Chrysler town and country mini-van. the air conditioner in it was making a very bad rattling sound when it cycled on. This noise happened only with the compressor engaged. my mechanic replaced the compressor, accumulator and orifice. Still the same noise. I have also replaced the water pump, belt tensioner and idler pulley. still noisy can't figure out why..

My steering wheel has a squeak when turning either left or right slightly from center.. I usually notice the squeak while stationary or parking. It's louder and more noticeable when it's hot outside.
Listening carefully, it seems to be coming from inside the steering column, not from linkages or joints from under the car. Looking for a exploded diagram of the steering column components, perhaps it's just a U joint (tilt?) that needs some lubing to make it quiet.

I poured 2 ounces of power steering fluid into an automatic transmission. What a wake up when I saw gold instead of red dumping into the funnel. I then poured 14 ounces of ATF+4 into the transmission to top it off. It's been only 8,000 miles since the transmission was flushed. Should I flush now or is the power steering fluid compatible?

I was advised to replace my brake and power steering fluild at 40,000 by the Chrysler Dealer. Ever heard of this?

On my 2013 GLS i went to adjust the column back to me as my girlfriend drove on saturday night (octoberfest ) and as i pulled it back out the car shut off. i pushed it back in a little and the car started fine and has until i tested the issue again this morning when i got to work. i moved it about half way out and the radio shutoff. moved it a little more and the whole car shut off. it will not start until i push it back in some.
I am thinking that a cannon plug or something is either too short or routed wrong or something to that effect as i have the ignition on the column instead of the push button.

I just bought a new corolla a few weeks ago, (Build Date April 2012), so far the car is great except for one issue.
I've noticed when pulling out parking spaces the steering column makes a clicking noise. It sounds more like a plastic noise. My last car had to have intermediate steering shaft lubed every 40k (Pontiac) but it was more of a "clunk" sound. This is more plastic on plastic noise however this appears to be only when the wheel is about 1/2 turn from the "end" or all the way left, or all the way right.
I am trying to figure out if this is a "normal" sound or if something was not put together right. Here is a video .....

My 2008 GS 460 with 53k steering wheel makes a squeaky noise when I turn the car on and it moves to it's memory position, but only during the heat.

Funny my Audi did it when I got it. Had to replace steering column. My old Treg V6 did it. Lube job. And now the current Treg is doing it. All on the onset of warmer weather.

I have had some play in the steering wheel of my '04 F150 screw 4x4 for a long time. Today, I replaced the outer tie rod ends in order to get rid of a squeak. While I was down there, I tried to move the inner tie rods in and out and didn't detected any movement so I figured they were still good.
Now that the new outer tie rods are in place, my squeak is much better but I am still noticing play in the steering wheel. Assuming that I checked the inner tie rods correctly and that they are indeed ok, and assuming my new outer tie rod ends are good, why would I have any play at all in the steering wheel?

Just on my way home during the last few turns down the underground parking, I found the steering wheel column making some squeak noise. Is there anything I should check before bringing it back to the dealership?

I have a 2007 Lexus ES 350 ultra that I quite enjoy, it has 182,000 miles on it and as time has gone on it has developed this noise in the steering wheel and steering column that I cannot diagnose, it's a noise that I have posted in a video : [URL] .....
I'm fairly mechanically adept and inclined but I truly don't know what this noise is caused by, it sounds like it is in the steering column itself. Normally I would say it has something to do with suspension but since this happens whether I'm moving or stopped, I think it is just a worn or loose piece but I don't know where or what.

I have a '07 RX350. My steering wheel recently started having a squeaking noise when you turn it right, or left. This has nothing to do with the motor to extend or retract. You can hear the noise when you turn it ever so slightly back and forth (whether car is running, or not). I have seen other threads that talk about a grommet needing greese between the steering wheel and column, but not enough detail for me to determine what they mean. Also, if that's the case, I am not sure how you get to tha area?

I saw some pics of MPG calculator right on top of the steering wheel column. It was black and believe it displayed 2 sets of numbers.

I LOVE my new 2015 RX. I took delivery just a few weeks ago (07/11/14) and just hit the 1K mark! This car is so nice, and solid I truly am so happy and proud to have it.
One little *little* thing that I did notice.. is that over the past few days.. I notice that when I get in the car, or exit.. and the automated tilt steering wheel moves up or down, it make a very loud, and defined "squeak" noise. Specifically happens in the lower end, (i.e. when the wheel is near the bottom of the travel, as I have the wheel set to the lowest setting). the upper part of the travel seems fine.
Is this something I can fix myself with grease of some type? I would hate to have to block off a day, take to the dealer, get a loaner car.. and then go back etc.. plus.. I hate going to the dealer.. I am of the mindset that they generally cause more issues. (What if they scratch something, sit on the edge of my leather seats and make creases, etc.. ) so, if there is a way I can fix it.. I am all for it.

My car is 2 months old. About one week ago, I began hearing a subtle clicking sound when turning the steering wheel fatter than 45 degree on either side. At first I thought it came from the turning signal mechanism doing "double clicks" since it sounded merely the same albeit being a bit quieter, but now I think it emanates from just behind the steering wheel.
Since then the problem got worse, not louder but more frequent. Maybe its just me being more aware and looking for it, I don't know. Also this weekend I changed my set of wheels for 18" with low profile tires, coming from the stock 16" vw mags. May not be related since the problem started before I changed the wheels, but since it got worse.
