I have a 2004 chevy silverado 1500 ext cab with a 5.3 L 4X4 , I tried to plug in a code reader and I'm not getting any readings . The reader is working , My question is can this be fixed by me or do I have to take my truck into the dealer?

Several code readers did not work , it turns out that the OBD was on the same fues as the cigarette lighter . Changed the fues that was blown and my OBD works , now I can take my truck in for emissions test .
View 12 RepliesThe CEL came in on my friend's Chevy Silverado .....so he took it to the dealer for diagnosis/repair. After paying for the diagnosis and repair (supposedly he needed a new gas cap) he was good to go. A few days later the CEL came in. I have a code reader so he asked me to check the CEL code. It's P0442. The same code that the dealer sited. Since we know it isn't the gas cap what are the other most likely suspects? He says the truck runs fine. No drop off in MPG, no misfire, etc.
View 2 RepliesMy engine oil was drained,filter left on (I think)and refilled with ATF. I drove 140km before noticing. What is the extent of the damage if any. The truck seems to work better than before,oil pressure if about the same as before. I am trying to get the dealer that did this to give me a written warranty in case something does go wrong. The truck is a 04 Silverado 6.0litre with 250000km.
View 19 RepliesMe and the wife got in the ole '97 1.8. After may be 5 mins or so, I noticed the CEL was on.
I've only ever seen the CEL light on once, and it was b/c the gas cap was loose.
The car ran fine, nothing out of the ordinary. After getting home, I plugged in the dusty OBD reader thingy and it spit out a code, I can't remember. P401 or something like that. EGR emission low?
It appeared that my EGR valve is all cruddy with carbon deposits. So Is removal/cleaning terribly difficult? I'm thinking some carb cleaner and maybe a scraper would do the trick.
My a/c recently is not blowing the same amount of air thru the cabin. Thought it was the cabin air filter because I was recently in some really dusty conditions. The compressor under the hood (and both lines) run very cold, but cabin blows cold air just low volume compared to before my dusty trip. Am told the 2004 does not have a cabin air filter. If that is true how and where is the air filtered or input? Think something is restricting my air flow causing me problems.

I hear one is inline with the code port? Checked 1 fuse #110? looked good...I don't have a manual so I"m lost.. or there are more fuses?
Also the speedo mileage sometimes will go blank? at start up then come back on ?? seems to be working even when blank? First I need to get the code reader port to put out..so i can see the codes....
The A/C on my hand-me-down '99 Lumina has never been outstanding, but has kept the Florida summers at bay. I recently turned it on again (I only ran it once or twice this winter) and the system was empty. I refilled it and it was empty again in 72 hours. I was hoping the seals had just dried out, but it continues to empty after several other attempts to recharge it, including adding 134a with lubricants. I added 134a with UV dye in it and the only leak I found is around the compressor clutch. I accept that the compressor probably has to go, but am puzzled by the manifold gauge readings taken when I added the last can. I just don't want to put in a new compressor and find out that wasn't the only problem.
With the system off, both High and Low sides read just under 70. (Normal Low and High side operating pressures for this car are listed at 42 and 340 respectively.) When the system is turned on, Low drops to 30 and High goes to 80 and there is no air cooling. After 30 seconds the High side slowly climbs to 200 and the Low side slowly drops to 26, with almost no air cooling. When the High side hits 200, it drops back down to 80 and the Low side goes back to 30. After 30-45 seconds it does it again and keeps repeating. The compressor clutch stays engaged the whole time. I looked in the Haynes A/C Techbook as well as online and can't find anything that resembles this description. If this is just symptomatic of a bad compressor, or is there more evil afoot? Also, while I have the system open are there any parts I should replace at the same time given the age of the system?
I am trying to find out how many o2 sensors are suppose to be on my 2003 excursion? I am getting two codes on my OBD reader, an "o2" and an "o2 heater" code flashing...... I have replaced both the o2 sensors i found, both were at the exhaust manifolds.
View 14 RepliesTruck had a rich on bank 2 code about a month ago, I cleared it and the service engine light stayed off for quite some time.
Last friday on the way home from work the truck started shaking badly right from idle, and at one point on the freeway the service engine started flashing. I couldn't pull over as I was on a bridge but once I dropped my speed the light stayed on but the flashing stopped.
I went to plug the truck in today and first shot it didn't communicate with the code reader at all, I talked to someone who told me that the cigerette lighter fuse is also the OBD port fuse, I pulled a fuse from somewhere else and plugged the reader in again. This time it started communicating with the truck but didn't display any codes while all the while the truck is miss firing and the service engine light is lit up on the dash.
One other weird thing: The fuse had an LED indicator to show that it is blown, when I push the cig lighter in the led gets a hell of a lot brighter, if there is always power drawn through the circuit shouldn't the LED be constantly bright all the time? I'm wondering if there is a short somewhere. Where to look next??
I am told I am possibly having some engine misfires and I need to get my error codes read. The problem is I don't want to drive the car to an auto parts store to get read because the engine is really rough and bumpy. So what kind of code reader to get, OBD I, OBD II, CAN..etc??? I have a 2000 Buick Park Ave. I have a mechanic coming over tomorrow, and it seems he doesn't have a code reader off hand, so I gotta pick one up...
View 4 RepliesI have an 04 Silverado Z71. I am getting error code U1000 on my Scanner. As well as a torque converter code and a front axel code. I can not start the truck. Its as if its in a safety lock out or something.
I talked to a service tech at the lock gmc dealer and he said the U1000 code was definitely the reason it wont start. Possible bad ECM somewhere in the system.
Where can i find a full wiring schematic for my truck ?
2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD.... Rear brakes make strange winding sound when coming to a full stop, noise only apparent under 5MPH. They have been completely done over. Rear end issue? Changes gears fine, brakes work ok.

View 5 RepliesI have a 2004 Solara. Ever since I could remember, the outside thermometer has been giving me false readings. When I pulled out of my garage today, the outside thermometer read 50 degrees. I drove to work without stopping for 60 miles and the gauge still read 50 degrees. When I got to work, the gauge quickly dropped to 41 degrees.
This problem has happened many time before. When the car is in motion, the temperature will not change. When the car comes to a stop, then it will adjust. Where is the sensor for the thermometer? Maybe the air is not reaching it due to the high speed.
I have an early 04, I'm not sure if there's a different in pressure over the years. But I'm curious what normal or average readings are. Btw I did replace the icp and pig tail last year. Here is what I have in psi from my sct
Cold start at idle 680 .23v
Warm idle 635 .24v
Cruising 1800rpms about 1500 .32v
WOT about 4200 .78v
I have a 98 Silverado with 5.0 liter, 2 wheel drive. When cold it idles at 30 mph plus. When warmed up it runs just fine. This can be very challenging in icy weather. I have changed the temp sensor, cleaned mass air sensor, etc.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2004 Chevy Silverado (4x4 Extended Cab 5.3 L Engine) that only seems to "heat" the interior of the vehicle through the floor and dash vents. Hot air comes out of the vents no matter what I do ( I can direct this flow of hot air to the floor, dash, or both) . Even whe I use the A/C at the coldest selection it does not change the fact that HOT air is coming out of the vents. I am guessing that a door of some sort is "stuck" so that only engine heat is coming into the cab. Not sure if that is possible but just a thought. Whats going on?
View 9 RepliesI am sure some of us have heard and read the no oil pressure situation. i had it happen to me and I replaced the oil pump and pick up tube all new oe gaskets with the replacement. i still have the same problem. No oil pressure and the tick sound.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2002 Silverado. I am having problems with it starting. I turn the key to on, and nothing!! A friend told me how to reset or reprogram the key, turn to on 10 minutes 3 times. This does work, but it might be a day before it starts. I don't have a key with a chip in it, it's a regular key. Looking for info on bypassing the whole system.
View 3 RepliesI put 30dlls but when it was going on 24$ pump stopped, and I insisted on getting 25$ so I put another dollar but tank was filled cause the gun stopped again , then I go with the filled tank 2 days ago, I have traveled 110 miles and the cluster keep showing full gas bars, not even one bar has gone, I'm worried about misleading info about gas, is this normal,, maybe tomorrow it start dropping ,,if not it can be reset? Or I screwed the tank sensor or something? There's a way to reset gas reading? btw 55.4 mpg on those 110 last traveled miles,
