Vehicle: 1983 chevy c10
Here's the problem, when the high beams are on the dash cluster lights work fine,but when I turn the high beams off the dash cluster lights go off.Im going to buy a new high beam switch but what else might cause this problem?The truck has one of those metal button high beam switches that is mounted on the floor.
I have a 1983 Chevrolet C10 Silverado that I am slowly restoring. I recently had to change nylon timing gear and chain. It ran ok but now will only crank but not start. I am getting gas to the carb and I tried a couple of shots of starting fluid. It didn't try to start at all. I pulled some of the plug wires and I am getting spark. The plug wires look good. I am starting to get a little stumped.
View 19 RepliesI have an 2001 F250 SD with 7.3 Diesel. Headlight switch failed and I replaced it. But now I have no high beams and my dash lights that light the dash up don't work. Gauges, fog light, low beams all work fine. Fuses checked. Multi function switch checked. What to do next?
View 1 RepliesHave a 2001 Prizm with 120k miles on it. Just had the recommended 120k service done a month or two ago (local shop that has been reliable to me) and they commented on how mechanically solid my car was.
Thursday drove to work like normal. When it was time to leave, car wouldn't start. No dash lights, nothing at all when I turned the key. Got a ride, came back later that night and jumped it and it started right up (didn't wait at all, but I also didn't check it before hooking up the cables - it might have started without a jump). Radio had reset and so forth, but it was running.
Drove Friday, it was fine. Car sat all weekend. Monday morning, dead as could be again. No dash lights when I put the key in, nothing when I turned it. Maybe a single click, but nothing more (can't remember for sure).
Drove wife's car to work. Came home Monday afternoon and the car started right up with no problem. Was curious if the battery voltage was low or anything, so I turned the car off, hooked up my bluetooth OBD reader (generic ELM 327 off ebay), and tried to start. Car was dead. Unplugged the reader, still nothing.
Took the battery out and ran to the store, assuming a bad or weak battery. They tested and said it's completely fine. Went back home, hooked it back up, car started right up. So now I'm suspecting something's up with the ELM327... I just got it last week, a few days before this all started. Had it hooked up all week long and didn't unplug it till the first time the car wouldn't start. Didn't plug it back in till Monday afternoon's issues.
Could a flaky OBD reader cause these kinds of issues? Anything else I should be checking, or do you think I'm ok as long as I toss out that reader? When I was using the reader last week, it seemed to be reading everything fine and sending the data over to my phone. When the car was dead each time, it acted like the battery was completely disconnected - radio reset, NO lights, etc. Could something with the OBD reader mess up the computer and make it act like that, and then a little time lets the computer reset or something?
2011 Silverado instrument panel dimmer won't reduce below about (subjectively) 40% intensity and cannot be turned off - still way to bright for old eyes on dark mountain roads. Dealer says its characteristic of the model and has no suggestions. Scan-tool results for dimmer potentiometer output reads 2.7 volts (9%) at minimum rotation, and 3 volts (100%) at max intensity. Scan-tool results for LED PWM drive signal reads 0% at minimum and 100% at max. The pulse width modulator (PWM) appears to be an imbedded component of the body control module (BCM) so is not accessible. The dimmer potentiometer is a component part of the headlights combo switch so is likewise not directly accessible.
Since I can't get to the potentiometer voltage divider circuit, if I add a fixed resistor to the output leg of the potentiometer and reduce the dimmer signal voltage by another 0.1 volt (to 2.6 volts out to BCM/PWM) will I set a BCM DTC or raise the voltage on the LED drive pulse to a damaging level? Alternatively, if I place a spst switch in the dimmer output signal, will the PWM simply switch off, or try to further decrease the drive pulse width? Last shot-in-the-dark question before I drag a scope out and start tapping into wires, how to find out what IC chip is used in the PWM?
Anytime I turn the headlights on, the high beams go on too; I cannot switch off the high beams unless I turn off the headlights entirely (I have been driving with the low beams on during the day for the 5 years I have had the car)
I can find no reason for this; I'm inspecting the fuses (with little expectation). The only thing I can think of is the control switch or wiring. I have standard headlamps, not hid.
I experienced abnormal behaviour of the xenons (I think).I thought that when all lights were off (no DRL's or what so ever), and I flash the high beams (pull the left lever towards me and release) that I'd see the halogens only and no xenons, but apparently the xenons are flashing as well.
I know there's a mechanism in front of the xenon bulbs that covers the normal xenon beam partly for the normal lights, and gives you the full beam when high beams are on (the thing called "Bi-Xenon").
But I thought the xenons are not supposed to come on just for flashing if the normal lights are not already on, because the lighting of a xenon bulb is not fast enough.
I love this car- i just bought it , but it has one problem i cant figure out .The high beams didn't work at all -till my mechanic figured the prior owner took out the two fuses - now they stay on all the time - even when the car is turned off . My guess is the light switch - my mechanic said it is probably more than that...
View 3 RepliesI have a 99 silverado, 5.3l Z71. This morning got in my truck, it started up fine, I then noticed instrument cluster and radio lights were flickering/surging but voltage was at 14v. Put it in reverse and the voltage dopped to about 12/13v like it was about to die gave it gas and it shot back up to normal. So I'm driving and everything electrical goes out and comes back on. Battery flashes, security light flashes, abs brakes come on and off, gauges fluctuate. And noticed it was doing it every 4 seconds. Radio doesnt stay on after i turn the truck off either as it normally does. Doesn't do any of that while sitting idle only while driving and my truck never actually stops running which doesn't make me think alternator is going bad.
View 3 RepliesI recently purchased a 1994 Chevy Corsica that is in excellent shape for the year with one exception. I can't get the high beams to come on. When I pull back on the turn signal lever, nothing happens. I know that most of them make a "click" noise when you pull on them, but this one doesn't. Is the high beam switch a part of the turn signal switch that is in the steering column? I am not sure what else to try.

The dealership has no clue - they wanted to sell new bulbs. They are barely bright enough to drive at night, certainly not 10% dimmer from age as they described.. (plus the auto on does not work ).
I have a 97 chevy blazer, that has no headlights. the daytime running lights, dash and marker lights all work but not the headlights or high beams?

Which I find unusual since no other car I've ever owned did this (Including my '12 TDI), and as far as I understood, in the US (At least here in NY), it was actually illegal to have them both on at the same time. ?
View 12 RepliesSo I had the strangest issue with my car last week. I was driving through my neighborhood at low speed (30 km/h) when the engine suddenly cut out. All the lights in the cluster turned off and I could not get the engine started again. It would not crank, there was simply no power to anything but the clock. I called a tow truck and when we were pulling it up onto the flatbed my cluster came back to life. I did not try starting the engine again however.
I dropped it off at my dealership. They've had it since last Friday and were not able to find a definite cause. No codes were found other than a MAF fault 1000 km's ago. They even had a mechanic drive it home to see if they could reproduce it on a "regular" drive. They did an ECU update because apparently there have been other cases across the country where the EGR valve will randomly open at the wrong time and choke the engine. I'm supposed to get the car back today but I find it unsettling that this could potentially happen again at any time.
I have had 2-3 times over the last 4 years where I got back to my car and I was not able to start the car. It would crank, sometimes even start for a few seconds and run really rough, then die again. Once I was able to get it started by repeated attempts, another time I had to get it boosted.
My parents are disabled and have a 04 rx330 and with 80k on it. it's not running. here is the problem.
CAR HAS A BRAND NEW BATTERY.
I can unlock the doors, get in the car and try to start it. When the key is turned as far as it will go without starting the car the cluster lights up, all warning lights come on. but that's it. Radio, climate control, windows, donut seats, NOTHING else works. Then when you turn the key to start it nothing happens, Not even a click. power wouldn't work.

NEW BATTERY, CHECK FUSES, ROCKING THE ROCK IN PARK, STARTING IN NEUTRAL
nothing as worked. I'm pretty much lost now.
I've ran into an issue with my high beams on my 07 Camry SE. All lights are working except high beams. When you switch to high beams the lows only stay on. The dash light comes on and shows high beam indicator, but no brights! Fuses look good, and so do both bulbs. Going to go buy a bulb later today just to try. Like I noted they both just suddenly stopped. I'm leaning towards dimmer switch on column now.
View 11 RepliesYesterday, I went through my car doing a complete LED conversion. I got everything done. And then I replaced my high beams with Silverstar Ultras. I didn't touch my fog lights or my low beams (these will come next.) And then I went and got some wings with the boys, showing off my new LEDs and my bright high beams. We noticed that my fog lights turn off when my high beams were activated. A cool point I never knew about, but, it is extremely relevant in this story.
This morning I went to work, and noticed that my fog lights were not working. So after work, I came home and tried everything to get them working, check fuse in car, and tried every combination of light to activate them. Then I checked the fuse box under the hood, I hadn't actually ever looked in there before. When I did, I noted that the 10amp fuse, Fog R/R was missing... MISSING. I took the spare from the cover and put it in, and bam, fog lights work again.
Like on most Chevrolet's or other cars, when you unlock your car with the remote, your headlights come on for awhile. I've tried to 'unlock' this feature with a scanner but the only option I was able to change was the auto lock door function. Is there any way to activate this feature (if possible)? If its not possible with a scanner. I have a '09 Santa Fe Limited, w/ Auto Lights w/o DRL.

I've looked online and it seems fairly easy to change out the bulb but I wanted to know if there any specific bulb brand recommended and also I wanted to know how to add fog lights since I live in a part of the country where it snow alot and its foggy in the summer.
