My 2011 malibu has approx. 20,000 miles, it makes a loud humming noise that is very annoying, can't even hear someone talking and must turn up the radio. It gets much worse when you get up to 55mph and above. I thought it might be the tires but they look good, but could it still be the tires?
View 5 RepliesI have a 2002 Malibu and we have had the car about 3 years and since we purchased the car it has what a humming noise from the front when changing lanes on the highway or when making curves on the highway only when turning left.
Being an avid Car Talk listener, I decided this was probably being caused by wheel bearings and I decided to tackle the job myself and changed both left and right front wheel hubs and the noise did not change, it is still there exactly as before ! I also replaced the brake pads and rotors while it was apart.
Remembering other car talk conversations, I decided next that it must be the tires, I replaced the tires which were due for replacement anyway and guess what ? The noise is still there exactly as before !
Out of ideas, I took it to a mechanic and he said that he ran the car on the lift and was able to reproduce the noise on the lift and he felt it was coming from the differential within the transmission. While it was at the shop I had him do a wheel alignment as well to eliminate any sort of suspension issue.
My question, does this make any sense ? To me when the car is on the lift, the differential really isn't doing anything, the wheels aren't turning at different speeds because they aren't touching anything therefore to me, the diagnosis of differential doesn't hold water.
What could be causing a loud roaring noise when accelerating. I'm thinking it may be in the transmission but not for sure.1st I thought it was a CV joint going bad. Also acts like it's in 2nd gear. 2006 Malibu Maxx SS , 97,000 miles....
View 6 RepliesI have a 2005 Chevy Malibu, automatic transmission. When I put it in reverse and then press the gas pedal, I get a rather loud grinding noise for a couple of seconds. What is causing this, and is it doing any real damage? I have no other problems with the transmission.

View 5 RepliesI bought the car( like six months ago) there has always been a loud humming noise from the fuel pump ( I'm pretty sure it is the fuel pump anyways) not the normal whirring noise the fuel pump makes but a hum you can hear about ten feet away. Had no issues till just lately when the afternoons are well into a hundred degrees. That is when my car starts giving me issues. After one of these hot days on my ride home from work, I had just come off the highway and stopped at a stop light when I felt the engine bogging out, the engine stalled and I had to push it to the side of the road.
Its worth mentioning that this humming noise is much louder in the heat than the cool morning then when I turned the key to hear the fuel pump(auto fuel inject) it was louder than it has ever been, and would keep stalling on the way home, I had at the most a quarter tank of gas (gas boy is busted/stuck I think) the fuel pump is bad? Could it be the sock? I thought I read somewhere that my girl pump uses gas to cool down, and that having the tank any less than a quarter could lead to the fuel pump overheating????
I bought my 2011 Sonata with 27k miles on it. After a while (few months) I noticed on occasion when turning I would get a screeching/squeal noise from the front tires. Only happened during certain turns (U turns I noticed where higher chance of happening).
I rotated the tires (Front to the rear, Rear to the front), and then there was a loud humming noise. I got it checked with the dealer and they confirmed tires were cupping (uneven treadwear right?) . So now its been 10,000 miles and the noise is the same. I just got an alignment done and there has been not much of a change.
So, other than getting new tires, should I get the tires balanced? Or just rotate them once more so that the rear return to the front again? Will I have to get another alignment done?
2011 chevy malibu. 3 days ago on my way to work my car would hit about 2500 rpms and drop then go back 2500 and drop continously. I stopped turned it off and it ran fine. now I've noticed when taking off from a stop it's a jerking/quick (only once not multiple times) kind of go. It used to be very smooth. occasionally the rpm problem will return but less severe.
View 1 RepliesAfter I took my Ford Focus 2011 to the dealership for a free oil change I noticed a subtle, low hum coming from the car when I hit speeds past 40mph. At first it sounded like the engine of a louder car driving near me so it took me a couple days to realize that it was actually my car making the noise. I intended to bring the car right back to the dealership to complain about this but I kept getting preoccupied with my studies for my summer courses. It's been roughly 3 weeks now and the low hum has gotten a lot louder now and can be heard over music.
The noise begins when I approach 40mph. The noise is probably at its loudest at speeds of 40mph-70mph. The noise is made even when I am not stepping on the accelerator or using the breaks. I haven't tried putting the car in neutral at those speeds. What might be causing that noise? Although I don't really trust the dealership since my car seems to manifest a new problem after each visit.

Sometimes when I turn my car on right after I turn it on, there's a loud humming sound like a compressor or something is kicking on and it's not fully engaging. And it only makes the sound for maybe 3-5 secs. Sometimes it won't happen when I turn the car on, but when I'm driving and I let off the gas and go to touch the brakes, it'll start.
The best I can describe it is a 'hum'...but it's loud, and I can feel it as if it's near the gas pedal right behind the firewall.
Dealer thought maybe it was the ABS switch testing itself..but they could never reproduce....I got in after they replaced my rims and checked it...and it did it 4 times when I started it, then turned it off. He came out to check, and it was almost as if you couldnt hear it outside of the car.
So, what the sound might be...I can't reproduce it anytime I'm there. Figures...... but I hear it almost daily. He put some foam tape on the firewall behind the gas lines saying the 'pulsing' from them might be doing it...but it did it again this morning.
I just recently bought a 2011 powerstroke f250 and while running I can hear the fuel pump humming pretty loud. Is this a possibility that it's going out? Or is this normal?

I think if the noise relates to the brakes or the pads, there should be no noise until I apply the brakes, am I right? My car: Chevy Malibu, 1999. The brake light is not on.
View 1 RepliesAfter a little less than a week of clunking noises the steering on my daughters 2004 Malibu completely failed. The steering wheel moves the steering column, but not the tires. NHTSA has done 2 investigations and issued 8 TSB's on the steering system, but no recall. My question is if there is a way to determine if it is the rack and pinion system or the power steering control module. It seems many people have replaced multiple components on their cars without resolving steering problems. I am hoping to avoid that...
View 2 RepliesWhen I brake I get a rhythmic noise that starts like a quiet chirp and by the time I have completely put the brake pedal down it sounds like a loud grinding noise. It is a rhythmic pulsing noise, not continuous. I recently got new rear drum brakes, and 2 garages said my front brakes were fine. One guy said it could be the wheel bearing but I looked online and it says that happens when you accelerate, not when you brake. It only happens when I brake at relatively low speeds. In other words if I'm on the hiway and brake to slow down from 70 to 60 or 40 to 30, it won't happen. I also feel vibration in the brake pedal, but only when I have almost completely stopped.
View 1 RepliesI have a 4 cyl. '99 Chevy Malibu with 137K. Two weeks ago she started making a growling/rubbing noise coming from the front of the car. If I steer even a little to the right the noise goes away. If the steering wheel is straight or turned to the left the noise persists. The noise is always present, except when turning to the right and at when I slow to stop there becomes a slight oscillation in the noise.What is it? Is it hard to repair? I typically change my own brakes, alternator, tie-rods, and simpler car repair tasks.

I have a 2008 Chevy Malibu. Lately when the engine is cold I will get to the end of the street and when I apply the brakes the car will make a clunking noise and a couple of times it has actually died and I have to restart the car. I only experience this the first thing in the morning, after that the car seems fine. I cannot tell if it is the brakes causing the problem or the transmission.
View 5 RepliesI recently hit a pothole and damaged one of my custom wheels to the point it was dangerous to drive on, I could not find a matching wheel for the car (2007 Chevy HHR) and had to drive on the donut spare for about three days, I put the spare on the rear passenger side, So for about three days I was driving with an 18" rim on one side and a donut spare on the other. I noticed a humming sound when I get to 40 mph. I thought it was just the sound of the tread on the spare, But I have since bought new rims and tires and the humming sound is still there. Again, I only hear it when I get to about 40 MPH, below that, no sound at all. The car seems to shift smoothly. Could driving on two different tires on the rear end have screwed up my differential?
View 4 RepliesB6 manual, after 20k miles with Dunlop Sport Maxx 235-40-18 tires (still pleny of tread left, even on fronts) a moderately loud humming noise has developed, loudest at 35 mph but even heard at 10mph, with an irritating resonance of subwoofer-type. Noise changes somewhat with road surface, but not much. Not related to engine speed, gearbox, or radio. My next step will be to swap wheels.
For now, any thoughts as to the cause?
What do I need to do about the high pitched noise I hear when turning the steering wheel right or left?
