I have a 2002 Celica GT and the cooling loop on the power steering that runs out in front of the radiator (or AC condenser) is cracked and leaking. I need to replace it, I have a few questions:
- Where to get a replacement, likely Toyota?
- Find out how much work it is to replace myself?
- Does the system auto bleed any air or will I have to bleed it?
We have a 2005 Camry XLE, with 102,00 miles on it. It has been very well cared for, and only serviced by our Dealer. We would like to keep the vehicle for another 50,000 miles. We have had an assessment of the vehicle done by the Dealer, because our brakes were very soft.
He found a great deal of air in the lines and flushed them out. He also found:
1.) Leaks in the power steering rack, which he graded as a level 8 severity on a 10 point scale. Repair estimate is $1100 to replace and align.
2.) Both front struts are cracked and graded for severity as an 8 on a scale of 10.
What do you think:
A.) Are these safety issues ?
B.) What are the consequences of delay ?
C.) Are these problems indicative of other likely problems ?
D.) Is it better to have a Dealer perform the repairs ?
I have a '92 Celica GT which runs perfect except for the Overheating problem, the Power Steering problem isn't a big deal for me, Before I owned a '88 Chevy Beretta GT and after that a 94' Pontiac Grand AM SE. They were both pretty crappy.
But I need to figure out why it's overheating like this, Me and my stepdad did a raidator flush on it and it didn't work at all, The fan works fine, but I will be driving it and will have to pull over quite often to let it cool down and put water in it, I've stopped using coolant because I'm wasting too much money on it, and it does the same as the water, I know for a fact it isn't leaking, it acts like it's burning it up or something. I'm not even speeding in it or anything, what's causing the overheating.
I thought it was the radiator but I was told it wasn't, then I noticed the radiator cap was spurting out water and took it to the auto parts store to get it replaced and it didn't work, They told me somebody before I owned it switched the radiator from a 91 Camry? or something like that. That is the cap he replaced it with anyways because the cap for a '92 Celica didn't fit, it was too big. But the car ran perfect when I first got it around December, no problems at all, It just started overheating like this about a month ago.
I have a 94 Celica 2.2. I'm having issues with power steering fluid leaking from reservoir cap. I replaced the cap due to the old ones seal had dry rotted and dip stick was broke off, also replaced the 2 small short hoses and new clamps. The return hose is working right and the high pressure hose seems to be working right. None of the hoses are leaking but pressure is building up and pushing fluid out the reservoir cap. What else could be the problem to cause this??
View 14 RepliesI am a Honda/Acura nerd. Decided to buy my friends 02 Celica that had piston slap from the famous oil consumption issue i learned about. Did a bunch of research and swapped in a Corolla motor. Everything seemed to go as normal, its in and running just fine. Only problem is now the power steering pump is making a very loud whining noise like its low on fluid.
Now first i must say the car ran, drove and turned just fine before the swap. No noises or issues aside from the piston slap. On the 1zzfe engine there is 2 bolts to remove the power steering pump and move it out of the way, easy enough.
My question is how did the power steering pump manage to get damaged? I've inspected under the car a bunch of times, inspected the top of the power steering pump, inspected everything i could looking for a problem. I just don't see any...no smashed hardlines, no leaks, has plenty of fluid, sensor is firmly plugged in. I notice when it is making the whining sound, the hardline that connects to the top of the pump is vibrating, which is what is making the sound i guess...if i crank the wheel all the way to the right or left it doesn't make the noise at all...
I have a truck that is leaking power steering fluid. I have change out the line from the bottom of the power steering fluid container, but i cant get it tight enough to stop leaking. I tighten it, and it stops for a while then starts leaking again.
View 1 RepliesI have 2002 F150 5.4L gas 4X4 Lariat FX4. Last winter when it got to -30C here in Manitoba one of the lines near the power steering cooler began to leak. I had just bought this truck and upon investigating found that the original line had been replaced and reattached with hose clamps. I had this "farmer fix" redone but then this winter when it hit -30C it blew apart. Obviously something happened to this line before I got it, so I am curious if there is an issue with these power steering cooler lines when it gets really cold. Should I just get factory lines installed and hope for the best?
View 3 RepliesI am replacing my leaking power steering pump. I checked the hose connections and it doesn't appear that the leak is coming from there. I have removed the right front wheel and have the car on jack stands. It is really tight under there.
If I remove the cross member under the power steering pump will that allow me to get the old power steering pump out and the new one back in?
Will the removal and reinstall of the cross member affect alignment.
2002 4.6 SC with towing package... Transmission cooling lines to radiator leaking. Replacing them? How long does it take, can it be done while working on the ground? Any tricks or problems to look out for?

View 14 Replies2002 LE 2.4 A/T 85k miles. all maintenance up to date.
I got a CEL P0420 last night, car ran fine for 85 miles so I could get home. Hook scan tool up to look at sensor outputs, and found that the A/F ratio sensor is N/A. And that the car is never going into open loop. Coolant temp stays around 185 at 55 mph and will only hit 200 if I hold it at around 2500 RPM in neutral while stopped. Even on the highway it stays in closed loop.
I know about the P0420 catalyst code every Camry I have ever had eventually gets it. But could it be caused by staying in closed loop for extended periods of time? Should I replace the thermostat to try to get the engine temp up?
Check engine light with code 0125. This code indicates low coolant temp for closed loop fuel control. Well I have changed the thermostat, engine temp sensor and new coolant. After driving approx. 5 miles the light came on again.
View 5 RepliesI have a power steering fluid leak. I believe (it appears to be) it is coming from what is described in the manual as the "power steering cooling pipe". It looks like it is right up front just behind the radiator on the cross member, and perhaps may have rusted through. All of the pipe is intact except one small corroded area.
I looked at the procedure in the manual to replace this and it looks rather complicated.
I figured I would just cut the leaky section out, and replace it with double hose clamps and a piece of fuel line.
My main question is: Is this in the return circuit (low pressure) or the supply circuit...High pressure.
i have a 91 celica 4AFE 1.6L 5 speed & the cooling fan won't come on. we checked, the fan does work, we changed the fan relay & that's not the problem. what should i do now?
View 14 RepliesThis car started overheating while at drive thru and I noticed the cooling fan was not on. The coolant overflow tank was bubbling and the top had come off spilling coolant. dre it home and it runs hot now while driving. I pulled over a couple hours and let it cool off and then added coolant to the radiator directly and drove home with no issue.
Checked coolant level today and it was fine and I drove it a mile and back to the store with no issues. I wanted to ask how I could rig the cooling fan to stay on all the time to see if that is the problem before sinking money into t plus I am not convinced there is a more serious problem especially since it ran hot while driving.
while out of town the big belt that runs the alternater and ac broke and took out the power steering belt. I replaced the big belt but do not know how to do the power steering one. I can hardly see the back sprocket.
View 6 RepliesI need to remove the power steering pulley on a 2001 Toyota Celica GTS to replace the pulley shaft's seal. I've got several pullers, so I figure one of them will work. But, I'm concerned that when I pull it out it could damage whatever it messes with inside. Also, I'm going to try doing this with pump on the vehicle.
View 1 RepliesMy cooling fan just stoped working the other day (not sure why) i replaced the fuses and relays they are all good. Now when i unhook it from the radiator fan switch it turns on but plug it back in and well it shuts off, i put a new switch to see if it will work but it started running real rough and hard to start so i put the old one back on and nothing changed. I read the book and checked everything but still nothing and why my engine light came on and it started running rough.
its a 91 celica 1.6 (4AFE)
I got my oil changed and was told my coolant reservior is cracked and leaking. I have been driving 4,000 miles since then and not known or noticed anything until informed today.
Is this a high priority fix? I'm not sure exactly what it is but my car hasn't showed any signs of overheating. Also what is an estimate of price for parts and labor?
Both engine cooling fans on my 1986 Camry are running all the time; even when the engine is cold.
View 12 RepliesI have a 2004 2.7 liter toyota tacoma with 135000 miles. the head cracked and was leaking coolant into the #2 cylinder. it wasn't catastrophic and was still running with just a stumbling idle at start up when cold. That said i took it apart, found the crack and I am in the process of replacing the head at home, my mechanic did all the diagnosis work.i don't remember overheating or when the head could have cracked.
Question is.....what should i check or replace while the head is off so that i don't crack my new head??there were never puddles of coolant under the truck. I just don't want to replace my head and crack a new one.
