So I'm doing some work on my friends car he just bought, 1990 gts, rebuilt 5sfe, not sure how thoroughly it was rebuilt, there seems to be a metal grinding noise coming from somewhere in the belts, sounds almost like water pump, belt tensioner, ac clutch, or something along those lines. I don't know much about these motors, anything commonly go out on these?
View 2 Repliesgot a sweet deal on it but only 1 problem with the car. when i shift into 2nd gear there is a grinding noise, however it doesnt grind if i drive super slow... it doesnt really matter if i upshift or downshift into 2nd it will make the noise either way... also the grinding noise is only there WHILE shifting the lever into 2nd gear so its only there for a second, once the lever is shifted into 2nd gear there is no grinding noise at all...not sure if this is related but the clutch pedal also feels very lose just when its about to hits the floor...
View 4 RepliesA year ago I heard occasional metal grinding noise coming from the front, sounding like front driver side. Sounded like CV joints that I heard before. The mechanic said it's transfer case/transmission problem, so I replaced the transmission but the noise came back a few days later. The mechanic said to drive it for a while and the noise may go away, if getting worse he can fix it since it has 2-year warranty.
Now a year later the noise becomes predicable and easily reproducible, I went back and asked them to check. They said it may be passenger side axle. I am feeling being manipulated.
I commute 180 miles a day, 6 days a week. I noticed metal on metal grinding noise(more noticeable) at high speed above 75mph especially on asphalt road. I'm sure noise is there at low speed but not enough to notice. My car has 50,000 miles. Tires? Electric motor?
View 7 RepliesI have an '02 Taurus. For the last year or so it has intermittently produced a metal on metal grinding noise while failing to start up. I'm told this is due to teeth being missing on the flywheel between the starter and the transmission. It's taken as many as six tries to get the car going. But the car has always started in the end.
My questions are: Is the problem flywheel worth replacing at this point at this price? Is it likely to fail totally any time soon?
Also, might the March '09 replacement starter be implicated?
I have intermittent metal on metal grinding noise. Seems to happen when I am at highway speed. Seems to go away when I put it on 4 wheel drive or slow way down. On one occasion though, the grinding noise did not stop even after putting on 4 wheel drive - had to stop completely before it went away (did not come back after I drove off again). Diagnostics so far....
Unhooked the vacuum lines on passenger side actuator and hooked up vacuum gauge. Vacuum held at 20 psi and drops and raises slightly as the truck is being revved. Takes about 10 seconds for vacuum to drop to zero once truck is stopped. Putting it on 4 wheel drive drops it to zero immediately. Exact same scenario on the passenger side.
This leads me to believe my IWE solenoid is ok. So also my check valves. Next opportunity I get, I will raise one wheel, remove the vacuum line on that wheel and apply vacuum with my pump. Want to see if it will turn my half shaft.
2004 F150 FX4 ....
I have a 2011 Prius with about 32K miles on it. I've been hearing light metal on metal grinding noise for a few days now. So I decided to take it to a stealership and they told me my ceramic pads and brake rotors both need to be replaced for all 4 wheels. I thought Prius brakes don't need to be replaced for 100K miles.
View 7 RepliesMy father's 1997 F150 with the 4.6 two wheel drive, has me stumped again. I have a lot of mechanic knowledge but this one has got me wondering whats going on. Here is the run down. When you are driving down the road, it rides just fine and makes no noises from 0-20 MPH, after about 25 to 35 mph it makes like a metal on metal noise that is coming from the rear, and forces the truck to slow down, when you try to accelerate through this problem it has a bad bang and it wont allow you to speed up anymore, it does not seem like a brake issue (but I could be wrong) since it does not actually pull to one side or the other.
It seems like an equal force trying to stop the truck. I have heard rear ends that were going out and they make clunk noises or whirring noises etc, but its still some what driveable. I have checked the rear end oil and it does have oil in it, and its probably about an inch from the full level (but that shouldnt cause this issue im sure). My father wants a definite answer before we start tearing this thing apart to try and fix it. Since its mostly used to take trash off, and also get the kids down the dirt road to the bus stop.
When driving in my parking garage, I can hear a slight metal on metal noise. An extreme example would be sharpening a knife on a sharpener, its not as loud or predominate.
-I've checked the lugs, they are secure.
Car has springs and spacers.
I replace my brake pads and rotors in the fall of 2015 with EBC parts. Now almost 13,000 miles later, I started hearing grinding and metal-on-metal contact in the front. So I went out and got PowerStop pads to replace the EBC (EBC had way too much brake dust). I took off the front wheels and noticed that the DF pads had about 1/32 left on them, ok I guess its time to change them out. Onto the PF pads, I find that there is almost no material left, in fact I could scrap off what was left of the material. I decided to do a rotation while I am at it and noticed that the rear brake pads on both sides look like I never used them!! Is it really that possible to have 2 stuck calipers, both on the rear at the same time?

My car has around 67,000 miles. I was planning to take it to a Toyota dealer, although prefer to find a certified Prius or hybrid mechanic at an independent shop.
View 3 RepliesOk so 11 days into ownership and only slightly over 800 miles the car started to act funny. First the common DVD nav issue (no disk in drive message).
Second issue is a strange metal on metal rubbing noise when turning at low speeds (i.e. in parking lots). When I make a big turn (either direction) it sounds like either the brake calipers aren't releasing fully and is causing the pad and disk to rub, or something else is rubbing.
This actually happened once yesterday on the highway as well. going 75mph, a very loud metal on metal rubbing noise.
Seems to only happen when temps outside are below 40. It warmed up yesterday afternoon and the noise went away, but after it got cold again last night, the noise came back.
For the last week or so been noticing as I'm slowing down, brake or no brake, a metallic, grinding noise coming from the rear passenger side. Does not sound like a humming worn wheel bearing noise. Its pretty loud, almost clunky and not always consistant. Then the last day or so have noticed it on the right side. At higher speeds....faintly hear a ticking... The car has 48K on it.
View 2 RepliesThis morning on my way to work, pulling into the parking lot around 20mph. I hear a metal on metal grinding noise. (almost to the sound of a muffler dragging on the ground type noise). Then that disappears for a bit, hear a loud metal clunk then some high pitched sound. All within say 30 seconds. Definitely coming from the back, but can not tell from which side.
Things I've checked in the parking lot:
Nothing hanging low, exhaust seems in-tact
It doesn't look like the brake shields behind the rotors are bent or touching
Sounds still happening if on or off brakes , on or off throttle.
It seemed to happen only at lower speeds. Disappeared once I got up to 50mph
Just took it out for a drive, that loud metal clunk happened when I put it into reverse, drove around, no other sounds. I just don't have a warm fuzzy feeling that this will just disappear.
My car is making metal grinding noise when coming to a slow stop when you are stuck on traffic or going into your driveway. You can hear the sound and feel the sound.
I had this issue a year go and i took it to the dealer and they told me that i need to replace my rotors and my front brake pads.
A year later the noise came back and they told me that i need to replace my pads. I replaced my front break pads and a month later the noise is back. I went back and checked my pads and the pads were still new.
I only hear the sound when braking after driving in a heavy traffic or on a stop and go traffic. I don't hear the sound when i start to drive or driving in a non traffic condition.
I have a 2006 Elantra 4 cylinder with only 55,000 miles put on it.
Whenever I accelerate I hear this noise that sounds like a lawn lower under my hood, usually only there until around 45 MPH, then it dies down a bit. It as been getting louder and more....... screechy..... as of late.
Also, when idle, there is a sound that almost sounds like a metal grinding chugging noise. It comes and goes with no real rhythm or timing.
Additionally, there is a metal grinding noise coming from what seems to be my front right wheel area when I make wide right turns, as well as intermittently while driving regularly.
To my knowledge, neither of the motion noises seem to be happening above 45-55 MPH, or they are too soft to hear at those speeds.
So the other day I was driving the car and it was working fine, shut it off and turned it on like 4-5 times that day as I was driving around, then I went to check the muffler and when I started it it sounded like someone jammed a bunch of metal shavings in the engine. The engine is completely fine and there is nothing in it I know that for a fact, and the fact that the belt keeps jumping off is a def pointer that its something to do with a pulley. My friend thinks its the tensioner pulley because its jumping like crazy when the engine is running but the sound is horrid.
'm gonna have a friend come look at it tomorrow after work. Also, my friend snapped the bottom bolt on the power steering pump and i left the broken piece in and I always heard it rattling and it was bent when I checked cuz I thought that's what was making the sound. So that popped out enough to hit the pulley and bend what was left of the bolt down. I spun each pulley and I didn't hear any sounds, and I tried to shake them and none felt loose. Its got 130k on it but still, 1 problem after another after another. Could that broken bolt that came out and hit the pully possibly jarred it off balance or something? If the tensioner pulley isn't broken then something is making the belt stop because its pulling it down periodically. What I should look for to fix it.
1990 Nissan Maxima, i noticed that after changing the struts/springs on my car that when i make a hard right turn while accelerating the car makes a terrible grinding noise. I know this is a classic sign for a CV joint, but could it be anything else? It is definitely not tire rubbing, definitely metal sound. It doesnt seem to be getting worse.
View 1 RepliesI am having several issues. I got the lexus dealership to service my transmission recently. I got it back with a weird smell. It smells like body odor. I had to reach out to hendrick corporate for them to address the problem without charging me. Turns out it was the fluid they used. I could smell the smell from inside if i wasn't recirculating the air. They changed the fluid again and it still smells. Is my transmission doing this because it is too hot?
This smell was never an issue until after the first transmission service. And now I'm hearing a metal grinding sound in 2nd gear past 4600 rpm. It still shifts smooth but 2nd gear might be slipping. Something just doesn't seem right. o yea they gave me my car back with my brakes sticking after stopping in traffic. I took it back and was told my brake pads in the rear lost 2mm in less than 650 miles.
By the way this sound can be heard in 1st but is more prevalent in 2nd. It is not heard in any other gears. And when in sport mode the sound instantly stops when i shift up into 3rd.
I have a problem! I have only had my 07 gs awd for less than 2 months. I noticed this morning when I turn my wheel all the way to the left or right it makes a grinding or like metal on metal noise. My brakes were done only a year ago, and this noise only happens when I'm turned all the way to the right or left.
View 11 RepliesI drive a 2002 F-150 (4.2L) with 150K miles. A noise similar to the belts slipping started up the other day but stopped when I drove the truck for a short distance. So I thought slipping belts was the problem but the noise started up again even after driving several miles. The noise only comes on intermittently and not all the time. In fact, it never comes on when a mechanic is looking at it so they think I am hearing things.
I had the belt changed out and the mechanic said he thought the water pump was going out. So I had that changed out. He had the alternator checked out and it was good. The truck runs fine but the noise still comes and goes. It sounds like a high pitch vibration or like something is rubbing against something else but only periodically. What it could be?
