The key to the trunk lock on my 1988 Celica won't turn. I don't have the original key. Could be that I have the valet key. All other locks (ignition, door and dash door work. I will probably get a replacement from the junkyard if I can find a car with a lock and key. Other trunk locks are interchangeable with the celica???
View 6 RepliesOn my '88 Ranger, there is the key lock that needs to be pressed to remove the key. When I changed the ignition cylinder, I darn near went ahead and removed it. I though I better check here first, and see if I was going to disable some other function I don't know about.

When I move the control from cold to hot the cable to the heater control valve doesn't move.
Could this be a bad heater circuit breaker? I believe this circuit breaker is on the passenger side right side panel.
My 88 celica's manual transmission grinds a little, at times, when going in 3rd gear. I have atf fluid in it now as specified in the manual. Should I replace it with gear oil?
I don't want to damage the transmission or clutch.
When my car sits for a while and i go start it i hear for the first 2 seconds a noise then it goes away until i start it up next time after sitting for a while. It sounds kind of like a diesel.
I pulled the oil pan and checked the bearings they are all fine... to me it sounds like it could be something in the top end because the longer it sits, the oil drains out of the top end and when i start it the oil gets pumped back up to the top and stops the noise....but what is it?
I was thinking of checking the valve caps for intake and exhaust with a feeler gauge to see if there's a gap between the camshaft lobe which would make a noise...but more of a ticking...I am not hearing a ticking though.
I am replacing my leaking power steering pump. I checked the hose connections and it doesn't appear that the leak is coming from there. I have removed the right front wheel and have the car on jack stands. It is really tight under there.
If I remove the cross member under the power steering pump will that allow me to get the old power steering pump out and the new one back in?
Will the removal and reinstall of the cross member affect alignment.
I got an 88 celica convertible from my neighbor. This is a fixer upper. It needs a battery and an alternator. But i jumped it and after idling for 10 minutes, the temperature Gauge was almost in the red. Yes the radiator has water in it. Is it the thermostat? Or the head gasket?

That is, in the past, i've been able to drive it up to 9,300 feet with no problem. Could this be vapor lock? If so, why would vapor lock all of sudden start happening? If not vapor lock, what could it be?

Can't open the trunk from inside the car because the car thinks the trunk is already open.
Can't open manually - I think the latch is broken.
Can't override the power trunk mechanism with Vag Com.
Short of removing the rear seat to attack this from the inside, is there any way to resolve this?
So after the temperature drop .... Next day I opened the trunk to take out my ice scraper and It didn't closed! Warm up the car ... Full speed fans , fold down rear seats to get some heat in trunk area ... 30 min... And nothing. Sprayed some wd40... Nothing !
So I decided to take apart the latch .... Removed liner ...unplug motor unplug manual opener pull wire remove latch and put some white lithium grease... Then when I take it apart found the plastic little gear and internal was pretty dry no kind of any grease inside and it was stuck.
It didn't move so put some grease in all touching areas , gear and latch itself , twist it bunch of times until everything run smooth . Here is the picture of the all mechanism inside. Pretty simple... It's like a retractile pen like. Put everything back together and is working fine for now. Let's see if it work ok from now or I might be buying a replacement part, the new revision which it end in "D"...
Yesterday in the middle of a hot summer day in NY while running errands I drove my car to the post office. I was in there about 15 -20 minutes. After coming out and driving home about 5 minutes I get out of the car click the lock button on my key fob and nothing happened. The doors were locking so I tried the trunk to see if it was open and it was. I then tried to close the trunk and it wouldn't lock closed. The lock wouldn't engage.
I have 79K+ miles so when I get my 80K tune up I guess I'll have them fix that along with the recalls and everything else. But in the meantime I'm riding around with an unsecured trunk. Luckily the trunk is heavy enough so that it doesn't fly open while I'm driving.
I've looked around here and in my manual but can't find the procedure to turn off the "beeps" when I lock and unlock my car via the key.

To make things a little more confusing is that the car does not auto lock if the trunk is closed, I know this because when I get to work I never lock my doors. The first time the car locked with the trunk open I thought I must have accidentally hit the lock button on the key, but I have tested this with the key left in the house.

My key fits the door and ignition but does not seem to fit the trunk or the back seat lock that gives better access to the trunk. The fuel door switch works but the trunk release switch does not (no sound, haven't checked wires yet).
View 11 RepliesFirst problem after 3 years of use. 2012 sedan, the lock on the trunk refuses to open. Tried the key lock on the trunk lid, the remote release by the seat, and after crawling thru the back seat, the emergency release button on the lock itself. All no joy.
View 3 RepliesOk so this started with the ignition key cylinder locking and refusing to turn. Some tri-flow, patience and judicious taps of a hammer fixed that issue, but not before i pried apart the plastic cap that keeps the little spring loaded plunger in place that actuates the ding ding when the key is inserted to the ignition. This little plunger has a couple of contacts and is wired to the little green bulb that illuminates the ring around the ignition key. Everything was just fine until i caused an arc between the exposed contacts and the side of the ignition cylinder.
Now neither the fob nor the door switch will lock or unlock the doors or the trunk unless the key is in the 'on' position. It should be hot at all times. What have I shorted out? I checked all the fuses and of course they are fine. My nightmare is that i have messed up an expensive module. I did find the plastic cap and plunger hiding under and behind the heat ducts to the rear seats and put that back together, so there are no exposed contacts, but the damage has been done.
I have a 2007 GS 350 in which the electronic lock that you push on the outside of the trunk to open the trunk has gotten capricious because its external rubber has deteriorated. So I want to change it. The replacement part is readily available at the dealer and the parts guy said it is apparently not complicated to replace. But before doing that I need to remove the carpet padding on the inside of the trunk lid so as to get to the part to replace.
How to do that? There are what look like plastic screws holding the carpet lining in place but unscrewing does not seem to looses them. I removed one by pulling hard on it. Don't want to do the same to the rest in case that is wrong.
Also, it looks like the safety unlock handle and actual lock are obstacles to removing this lining. Do instructions exist somewhere for how to remove this carpet lining off the trunk lid?
This morning I went to reverse my girlfriends 91 sx celica out of the driveway only to find that the front left wheel locks up while trying to move backward. At first I thought it was the gear box so I put it in neutral but it still would not budge. The last 3 weeks it has been making bad clicking and banging noises I thought was just a poorly greased control arm. I drove the car down the street and back and it moves freely with a minor constant clicking noise but only while going forward. I'm wondering whether it is in fact the transmission or cv or what?

On Saturday my wife and I went out for a ride, she had to get something form the trunk so I unlock the doors and she gets out when she gets back in the car I notice the trunk lid light is on and i tell her to close it she said she did so I get out and close it. I noticed when i went to close it the latch wouldn't engage. I turn the car off and try to use my key to lock the trunk, I noticed the alarm doesn't engage when I try to lock it. I then try to start up the car and it wont start.
I pop the hood everything looks good I try it again no luck after about twenty minutes of testing, I decide to disconnect the battery. The car starts right up but while im driving i notice the trunk lid light comes back on and my doors keep trying to lock, then my windows go down for no reason...What is going on, I have heard that some passats have a real bad electrical problem with time but what causes it and is this something Im going to have to bring to the stealership to get fixed.
