Cavalier :: 1999 2.2l Power Steering Bypass?
Jan 26, 2008
So i just put a brand new head on my car, but in the process, we broke the outgoing line on the power steering pump. So last night, it heated up so much, the pulley blew off. this is about the 5th time ive had to do maintenance to the power steering in the past 3 months, and to be honest, i dont even care about power steering.
how to route the belt where i dont have power steering. i would also like it to route to have no A/C since i will be taking this out too.

1999.5 MK4 Jetta...
So I mentioned in a previous post that my dome light grounded out and melted the wiring down the A-pillar and into the larger harness. I cut the wire out and strangely am no longer burning up fuse #14 (interior lights, power windows, etc.) but continue to burn fuse #6 (central locking system). Probably the wires melted to the door wires and are grounding out.
Obviously I have to do a bigger fix to get everything re-wired (or just a whole new harness). But really, it's just the alarm that is keeping the car from being mobile, as the alarm is somehow cutting power to the starter (this happened to me before when fuse #14 blew - replace the fuse and boom, you have power to your starter again).
I have searched other forum posts fairly exhaustively with no luck - how to bypass the alarm cutting power to the starter? I know there is a fairly easy way to jump the alarm module connection on the MK3s, but can't figure it out on the same module on the MK4s. Again this is pre-immobilizer.

I've read what little information I can find about making a glow plug bypass, but everything so far applies to trucks with glow plug relays. Since mine is an Excursion I have a GPCM instead of a relay. How I might accomplish this?

IPR CF2 Byasss High Flow Coolant Filter Ford 6.0
Made for the 6.0, the biggest problem on the 7.3 might be finding real estate for the filter assembly.
One review refers to using it on a 7.3.

I have the 4r100 transmission how do I bypass the safety switch? Also what are your thoughts on starting the engine with the transmission out? I know to bolt the spacer plate to the engine.

Opinions of the bypass filtration? I've heard some opinions that since the HUEI injectors shear the oil so badly that there is no benefit to the bypass filtration since you can't run extended intervals. I asked a reputable shop that pretty much all drive and maintain 6.0's and build parts for them, and they said it reduces the chances of stiction, improves lifter lubrication and thus lifespan, and can actually increase the intervals. Does that sound legit and justify the kit if I plan to own it until it dies?

I had pretty much ruled out getting a bypass oil filter because I've read multiple times that the HEUI injectors of a 6.0 liter shears the oil regardless of filtration so that you shouldn't run extended oil change intervals even with the extra filtration. I'm wondering though if the cleaner oil would benefit the lifters and injectors within the regular oil change intervals, and if what I read before is correct about the shearing and not running extended oil change intervals. If I could run to say 7500 miles and it was better for the lifters and injectors than not running a bypass and changing oil at 5000 miles, then I might say it would justify it. I hear more and more about lifters in the 6.0 and want to everything I can to keep them operable.

I just replaced my factory oil cooler again, and my bypass oil filter came loose spraying 8 quarts of oil all over under the hood.
This is the second time it has done this. Both times my wife was driving so i don't know how it was running prior to this.
Now i think my oil cooler seal to the block is blown again! Just like the last time my bypass oil filter came loose.
Could this be a symptom of another problem?

I have a 6.0 f350 and had a bypass done on the EGR... Still there just bypass done... Ran great for about a week and then yesterday starting blowing black smoke and chugging when I stop at light or stop sign... Is it possible something came loose..

I am having some trouble with my 4R100 overheating.
Truck is a 2001 F250 XLT 7.3L with 244k miles on it. According to previous owner, the transmission was replaced around 185/190k but there was no paperwork to prove it.
I recently had a leak from one of transmission lines coming into the bottom of the radiator (the one on the passenger side). I replaced it and topped off the little bit of fluid that leaked out. Last weekend I installed a temp sensor in the transmission and hooked it up to my pillar gauges. The first few days driving with it, the temp was at/around 180 degrees, 25-30 degree outside air, unloaded on the highway averaging 70-75mph.
Today on the way home, the temp got to 180 after 35-40min of driving then continue climbing. I pulled off the highway after 1.5hrs and the temp was almost at 210 degrees. I let it idle for 5-10min and the temp didn't change. I turned it off and let it sit for 15 min. Upon starting it back up, the temp had dropped to 180. I continued driving and the temp climbed back up to 210 within 35 minutes. (65-75mph, 24 degree outside temp, unloaded). Once off the highway I averaged 35-45mph on the back roads to my house. The temp started to drop back towards 180 degrees.
Before I start throwing money at it, and installing a 6.0 cooler etc. I am thinking there is something else wrong here. I am going to look at new lines and replacing/repairing the bypass valve on the transmission. I am driving 2hrs to work each way and thats when the temp really starts to go up. The fluid doesnt smell burnt, its still nice and red. I am going to try and flush the lines this weekend and see if something is plugged/caught. I ordered an inline filter today and will put that in with a new hose from the transmission to the radiator (old one is rusted).

My 7.3 power steering is acting up. Feels like I am up against a rock. At slow speeds like parking lot maneuvering I struggle to turn wheel. Then all of a sudden I'll get power steering back and wheel will rapidly turn. Freaky.
Brake pressure is fine. They shutter pretty bad even with the new rotors I just put on but they have good pressure. But the steering is intermittent or no power steer.
I saw online to run engine at 2000 rpm and try steering but no change. Still no power steer. There is fluid in reservoir. There is fluid seeping up steering column from steering box. No clue if this is related or unrelated.
How to troubleshoot further. I hate throwing parts at problems before truly diagnosing. Also have pretty aggressive lurching during turns in four wheel drive. It's present on dirt road but worse on pavement. Don't know if this is related or not.

So, I'm replacing the Steering Box today and read an article that said you should replace the pump at the same time. what do you all think?? I have clear access to it now and they are not all that expensive?? Or are the ford one's bullet proof and leave it alone???
I don't have any leaks and it feels ok I guess..just pushing close to 200K on it.

I've got an 01 7.3 lariat 4x4 with an 03 7.3 engine in it (long story behind that) but basically I noticed one day I had a hissing underneath my dash and my brake pedal was a little spongy but my truck stopped, well before I could get it to a shop and checked out it went bad. Coming up to a stop sign and as normal hit my brakes and right before it came to a complete stop the pedal shot to the floor and I lost power steering as well as brakes and went rolling out in the road and almost got hit. So it's been parked ever since and I have changed the hydroboost, the power steering pump twice, flushed everything and bled everything and still nothing, can't even find any leaks. What to even replace now or whether to just take it to a shop and spend another small fortune.

I have been noticing my brake pedal is very firm on and off also my power steering seems to get harder to turn than other times. But today i was sitting at a few lights and could hear my power steering pump growling at me intermittently if you want to call it that.
Also sometimes my truck will pull to the left or right then it goes away if i hit the brakes again. I don't see how the hydra-boost system would do something like that. But its not the slide pins because i just greased those along with new brakes and rotors all around at the beginning of winter.
I noticed when I grabbed my fluid lines going to the hydra boost from the power steering pump they seemed to rattle very rough so that makes me wonder if the pump isn't going out. How are the brakes supposed to be on these trucks? nice and soft? rock hard?
By the way truck is an 02 with 144k on it

I have a 2000 Excursion. This weekend, I noticed some intermittent failure of the power steering where it seemed like the pump was not engaging and then would all of the sudden. Deciding to try to head off a failure, I got a reman unit from Oreilly and installed it this morning. It was fine when I tested, had good brakes and went locked to lock quietly without fuss. Let the house and within a mile, I lost steering and brake assist. I stopped and turned around, but what I am noticing is that at idle, I have no power steering, but when the RPM's are up, I do.

My power steering is only working when i turn it to the left. When I turn it to the right i have to get a 1/4 of a turn in until the power steering takes over. So i get under my truck to discover what seems to be a piece of my tranny missing. How screwed am I ???

My high pressure power steering hose just blew at the "B" nut at the pump. Meaning, the fitting is still in the pump but the line is out. Do I need to replace the whole line or is there a retainer I can swap out?

Ever since i bought my truck i have had a bad power steering whine. Replaced the pump and its still there. I got the truck in 2006 and think i replaced the pump in 08 maybe. Anyway I've purged, bleed, changed the fluid. Pulled a vacuum on it and still no luck. So I've just dealt with it for 11 years.
Well i can remember reading something somewhere about ford up-dating or redesigning one of the power steering lines that was causing this noise.
My father inlaw just bought a 02 and its so pleasant not to hear that when riding in his truck. It made me want to investigate the matter. SO if its as simple as a updated line I'm buying one asap. He got rid of his Chevy because of the reliability I've gotten out of mine.

I lost a hose in the driver side front wheel well this morning while pulling RV to a campground. By the time I got there and got the RV disconnected, I lost all power steering. I reconnected the hose using a zip tie and have a friend bringing me fluid to refill reservoir.
Is my pump toast now? Can I refill the reservoir and prime the lines and be good to go?

My power steering pump camp keeps coming off. Almost like it's got too much pressure. I'm stumped as to why but it makes a mess whenever it comes off.

While turning very slow and sharp on the farm, I heard a pop under the hood. I then lost power steering and brakes. I saw power steering fluid spurting in the left tire well behind the tire. Look under hood and saw fluid coming from a fitting on the side of the power steering pump. I have attached a photo....one photo with nothing and then other with a screw driver tip on the fitting.
It appears that the the pressure fitting blew out the side when I turned sharp. It has a nut from which it came (compression of some sort?). I can push the nipple of the fitting back into the nut but I guess the pressure is gone.
