On my 86 caprice classic. the gas Gauge jumps to full when i turn the key even when car is started but its only like a gallon of gas in there is it the sending unit the ground or something else and is there any way to test it.
View 7 RepliesI put a new battery and the fuel tank is full but the car always has trouble starting. the other day i sat trying to start it, pumping the gas for 10 minutes or so. Nothing. I noticed some dripping under the car but it looked like coolant. Could this be something bigger? I have a new battery in. Do I have to go and start it every week and let it run for a few minutes? Any portable car jump start?
View 15 RepliesLast summer the car would randomly overheat and we would switch the heater on and the temp needle would nose dive into normal range in 30 seconds. It made me think that maybe it wasn't really overheating.
This summer its started again. It gets almost into the red within minutes of driving it. There have been times where I turned and the needle went from almost the red zone to the normal range. Making me think its not overheating, but that nagging feeling tells me I need to know for sure.
The car will overheat within a few minutes. There were no visible leaks. I replaced upper and lower radiator hoses and refilled lost fluids. Driving it the first time, the upper radiator hose popped off and overheated. I initially thought it was the clamp being faulty so I bought a new clamp. Installed new clamp. Same thing. Same hose popped off again. Put it back on and its leaking fluid around the hose some how.
I know the lower hose has a coil in it to prevent collapse, should the upper too (haven't seen it collapse)? Why might it be leaking around the hose?
Next is the thermostat. That will be replaced this weekend. I'm pretty confident that it isn't the engine block cracked or a bad head gasket.
How should I remedy this hose issue and what course of action should I go for next? Water pump?
I just got a 1985 Caprice Classic, V8 305. I sometimes have trouble starting it when the engine is cold. When I received the car from a family member, he gave me some spray for the carburetor. This does the trick, but I would like to fix it so that I do not have to resort to this.
The visor has some instructions for starting the engine. The directions say to depress the gas pedal once before trying to start, and 2x when it is very cold outside. I'm concerned that the car won't start at all when the winter comes.. Where should I start to troubleshoot this issue?
When the 04 Prius is turned on the Gauge starts at one small left bar (empty) then Jumps to all bars lit (full) and starts to blink , and blink, and blink. The tank is almost full.

View 1 RepliesLast year, around Jan/Feb, our temperatures dropped down to about -30F, and I had a weird issue where my brakes literally froze. I couldn't push them at all. I let the car sit for a few minutes, and started slowly pumping the brakes, and eventually got them freed up.
A few months later, the brake line going to the rear popped. I eventually got it replaced. Then a few months later, the front brakes started scraping and squealing, and so I replaced the front pads and calipers about two weeks ago.
Now, the other day I was slowing down to make a turn, and my brakes completely went out. When they did, I heard a pop from up by the engine. I pulled over, lifted the hood, and there was brake fluid covering my hood, abs unit, and a small amount on the engine.
For the last couple of years, I've noticed the air flow changes from the floor to the defroster under hard acceleration. Not a big deal. This morning (7 degrees) the airflow was changing under light to moderate acceleration. It's a vacuum problem, but is there anything in particular I should be looking at? The car is running fine, no issues with stalling or hesitation.
View 4 RepliesSo my truck felt gutless somtimes, wouldn't start Every couple days , and Fuel gauge stops at half tank won't show full, so I went n bought a new fuel pump..... Well shoot nothing changed . I guess my next move is pull the dash off n fix gauge? It used to be a reliable truck . Now Im not comfortable to let wife drive it . I also pulled the chip to see if that had to do with not starting, also theft light blinks normal. I'm going to get some connector grease n redo all of my wires to c if there's just connection issues.
View 6 RepliesI recently took a drive down CA to visit some friends. The whole drive down, my gas gauge did not move one notch. Finally, when I got to SB, it had moved down a couple of notches. By a couple, I mean 2 at the most. The next day, we drive to Costco and all of the sudden my C stops and says problem with the hybrid system. My car had run out of gas however my gas gauge said I still had plenty over half full. This is partly my fault since I shouldn't have expected to have gone so far on the tank, but at the same time, why isn't my gas gauge warning me like a normal car would. I have an appointment to get the gas gauge fixed this weekend. My car has 4000 miles on it now.
View 7 RepliesWhen my fuel gauge gets to 3/4s full it stops working and goes to empty. My range display also goes off. When I refill it works again until it reaches the same point.
View 5 RepliesI am having a "made you look moment" that I thought was a blessing only to figure shortly after that it was just a very very evil joke. So what happen was I turn my car on after it has been sitting for about an hour and half in the shade in 80-90 degree breezy weather, the fuel guage decided that my half tank of gas was not enough and so it figured out a way to osmosis itself and create a full tank instead. Even my miles to empty rose too at the same time. the odd part was all I did was turn the car on to idle.
What gives? I have a new gas cap so its for sure not that, there is gas in the tank too. At first i thought it might be the floater in the tank getting stuck on something but then I thought it may be fumes from the heat causing a pressure build up. So I decided to drive the car to see if any change would occur and it did. It was dropping from full down a 1/4 then stayed there. I figured if I gas it a tad more it might suck up the fuel fumes or something and sure enough it did. It dropped back down to the original amount.
I don't think this is normal since my 01 2004.5 GLi go all the way... Note that i took this picture right after i "full" fueled the car (Just drove 2.3miles)...
View 24 RepliesWhen start my Caprice (1986) carb-- I used to step on the gas pedal (half step is more than enough) to start the car.
Once the car started it's idling normally, but suddenly after 3 or 4 minute the sound of engine go high idling as if I stepped on the gas and that is remaining for long time even if I step full gas, and if I turnoff the the engine and pull out the key, the car will remain working hardly and shaking like crazy before it completely stop.
What is the problem with my 86 Caprice Brougham? is that problem easy to fix?
I left the house and parked on a hill parking lot, drivers side lower than the passenger. When I left, I was driving around and noticed the gas gauge, which had been at half full, was now showing full. I thought if I shut off the car, that might reset everything. It didn't. Anything I can do to fix this? Top the tank and see if that won't fix it? Or take it in? It sounds like a stuck sensor.

View 2 RepliesThe fuel gauge in my 1999 Corolla is stuck on Full. My mechanic says it's the fuel sending unit and will cost $250 to replace. But today, the low fuel warning light came on and it appears to be functioning properly. Does the warning light use a different sensor or does that mean the fuel sending unit is working and the gauge problem is elsewhere?

View 1 RepliesI have a 2000 Silverado Z71 with the fuel gauge swinging from empty to full and all in between. I have heard of others doing this. I guess maybe its time for a new fuel module. It's been doing this for a couple of years, just keep putting it off. Is it easier to move the bed back or drop the gas tank? Also I have developed hard starting problems here lately, It having too crank extra long before it starts up. Could this be a sign the fuel pump is getting ready to go out.
