Camry :: Whirring Sound Upon Acceleration
May 10, 2014
I recently took my 05 camry 3.0 v6 110k mi in for a tune up and timing belt service. When I got my car back it was making a whirring sound upon acceleration. The sound is only there at idle and the start of acceleration, it goes away (or I can't hear it) once I get up to around 2k rpm. Also, I noticed that the car felt like it was missing under light acceleration. It was most noticeable with the car on cruise control and going up a slight grade on the interstate. It would just feel like the power was cut off for a split second.
So I took the car back in. Not sure what was done to it because I was out of town but it was returned to me still making the whirring noise but the missing feeling seems to be mostly resolved. I can't say for sure but it felt like it missed a few times after I got it back but nothing like it was before.
My car was perfect before the service/tune up. From searching around all I could come up with was that maybe the timing belt needs to break in or might be too tight or loose .
Here is a list of what all was replaced
Alternator belt
A/C belt
Power steering belt
Timing component kit
Water pump
Spark Plugs & spark plug boots
PCV valve
Intake manifold gasket

I have a 1999 Honda Accord (4 Cylinder, 180,000 miles). After a recent blizzard here in Wisconsin I am hearing a "whirring" sound coming from the front end of my car. I begin to hear it at about 10mph and it gets progressively louder and begins to sound like a jet at cruising altitude. The car overall sounds louder on the road. I checked for the possibility of snow/ice packed around the wheels or underneath the car but don't see any. A wheel bearing possibly?

I am having camry 2007 with 100 k.miles running. When engine crosses 2000 rpm, I can hear a tik tik sound from engine. This sound is not coming when engine is cold, and also when the engine is on acceleration.
I have checked alternator and A/C bearing. It's OK. I have also replaced timing chain tensioner.

For about 3 years, our SF (about 125,000 miles) has experienced the whirring/whining upon acceleration whenever the AC was running. I didn't do anything about this as the AC still worked well.
Just a few days ago, while running the AC for a "recharge" during our recent cooler weather, I realized that the AC was not cooling below outside ambient temperature, nor was the whirring present any more. I assume that the compressor finally seized. (?)
To keep repair costs low, and based upon the description above, where should I begin to look to see where the problem lies? Is it most likely a seized compressor/clutch? I am unsure if this is the issue, since even when driving with the AC turned to "Max", I now notice NO detrimental effects upon the engine/power output, which makes me wonder if the compressor actually seized. Wouldn't a seized compressor actually be very hard for the belt to turn, or possibly burn the belt?
I know the compressors and AC systems on these cars are notorious for dying too soon...

I have an 03 Camry LE with 80,000 miles I do all the maintenance myself it has had the alternator replaced once at around 40,000 miles. The problem that just started is a whistling sound that ONLY is audible after 2500 rpm at acceleration. When the car is in park no matter how much I revive the engine I can not get it to make the whistle sound it ONLY can be heard at acceleration after 2500 rpms.
Also once I cease to accelerate it goes away while I'm driving there is NO Whistling. I've read that it could be the alternator so I had it checked twice on the car and it checked out good it passed all tests. I've removed the belt and spun the pulley to listen for bad bearing but to me sounded fine. I've removed the throttle body boot and checked for cracks an found nothing also cleaned throttle body (not that it needed it) while I had it off.
Also checked air box and nothing. The only thing I've done recently was take out cabin air filter to clean and replaced it but there was no problem with that. What's puzzling is that it ONLY occurs at acceleration after 2500 rpms then stops after acceleration.

We have had temps up in the 90's for the past couple of days so of course. I turned on the A/C in the Passat (03 GLS V6 tiptronic) and noticed that the A/C unit is really loud. Now by loud mean like a Whirring sound. It almost sounds like the turbine of a jet engine starting up. Now why I never noticed it before, I don't know (getting old and deaf I suppose) but I was wondering if everyone else's A/C is loud like a turbine or if maybe this is a premonition of a compressor meltdown.

Just had the 3 year service and dealer did the Haldex service. On my way home I noticed this whirring noise when I'm on the highway and not on the gas.
It's loud enough where I can still hear it w/ the radio on. Seems to be coming from the center of the car. I have never noticed this before. Heard this after their Haldex service?

I parked the little dear in the garage about 9:30 last night. I went into the garage this morning around 6:30 and I noticed how still and quiet it seemed. I then opened the garage door and went outside for a few minutes. When I came back in, I hear a low whirring sound. I went back outside to listen, but it was definitely coming from the Prius, perhaps near the back, underneath.
The hatch was open; I closed it, but the sound didn't change. The fob was in the house, and I didn't open the driver door, so it wasn't the brake pump. It lasted at least 2-3 minutes, at which time I was too bored to continue listening, and I went back to weeding and watering.

I have a concern about not hearing the whirring sound after shutdown anymore. I know that the sound comes from a small electric-pump that pumps 3 liters of coolant into a thermal container (to keep it hot) everytime I turn the hybrid system power OFF. When the power is turned back ON, the coolant is pumped back into the engine.
I've noticed that after I got an oil change and tire rotation at Pep Boys the sound is no longer there after shutdown or power up. Then after a couple of days I took the car to the dealer to fix the tire rotation (because Pep Boys didn't do a good job at rotating the tires, there was a woo woo woo sound while driving) and the dealer also did a multi-point check, but they didn't say anything was wrong with the car.

My car was looking really rough, covered in salt. I took it to a car wash which was across the street from where i was staying last night. After the car wash, I drove home about 1 min. The car sat overnight (temp to -5).
The car won't start today. When I turn the key, it makes a "whirring" sound but doesn't turn over. No clicking. Good power, all lights are on. Put a booster battery back on the battery to try to rule out a batter issue, still no start.
Can the starter actually freeze? I'll never wash the car again.

I've been having a wierd whirring sound when I accelerate for the last 1000 miles or so. I have about 19k miles on my 20007 Azera Limited. As a driver, I do have a somewhat heavy foot so I worry that I tax the engine/transmission too much. What it could be?

Bought a Jetta GLI 2004.5 in January. 94K miles. No noises accelerating or while coasting (clutch or neutral). However, when I decelerate in 3rd and 4th gear w/ no foot on gas, there is a very apparent whirring sound from the front-end (maybe in the engine bay). But I don't hear it while decelerating in any other gears. What is the cause? I will try and capture sound later when I get home. Just wanted to see if this was a common fault.

My 2006 sonata gls v6 has a whirring /oscillating sound in the front end that is getting the best of me . It is a whirring sound that increases in volume and level as I accelerate up through highway speed . When i go over a dip in the road the sound will oscillate .(change in volume)
Though the car is a 2006 with only 31,000 miles on it . I put it on jack stands and put the car in drive . The front left (drivers side cv axle has a minute wobble to it . If I hold the cv joint at the transmission tight and wiggle the tire I can detect a little play . ( maybe 1/8of an inch )The boots are intact so no grease is oozing out .
I have already changed both hub bearings in the front end and there is zero play in any of the suspension . The brake pads were replaced and the disc 's appear true (I filed of any rust on the edges )while I was into it ...
When i apply the brakes at highway speed I can feel a mild shudder in the wheel but not too bad . There is no clunking or clicking in turns nor is there any change in sound when turning the wheel while driving ....
The tires are Cooper cs4's that are a year old with no sign of abnormal wear. I rotated the tires to verify its not a tire issue. The auto transmission fluid level is normal. I am thinking about changing both cv axles. I am hoping its not an output bearing in the tranny.

My 1992 Buck Century sometimes makes a whirring sound when I reach a speed of 45MPH or more. Sometimes it sounds steady or sometimes rythmic like "whir, whir, whir or whoop, whoop, whoop. It doesn't do it while standing still, so I know it's not the engine. It's strickly a motion noise. Is it the brakes or wheel bearings? Transmission problem?

The wife was stopped at a light in her 2006 S60 and when the light changed and she accelerated the car stalled and died. It would not start and thus I had it flatbedded back to the house. Id been told at the dealer during a service trip ($$$) that the alternator might be going bad as it was making a whirring noise and was given an estimate to replace it, the serperntine, pulley, etc.. of $1300. At the time it wasnt a driveability problem and being a working stiff I didnt have the 1300 to spend so I decided against doing the work. Thus, when the car stalled I figured it would be the alternator causing the problem and draining the battery.
I recharged the battery overnight figuring I could get the car turned on then remove one of the battery terminals to verify faulty alternator. However, car would not turn over, Id only get what sounded like a click from the starter. Fine, I figured, the alt killed the battery so I went and purchased a new one and installed it. Car would still not start and Id still get the click from what I believe is the starter. Tried the old bang the starter with a hammer and still nothing. Checked the connectors to the starter and all seemed ok.
At this point, the dreaded "my wife seized the engine" thought popped in my head. I then tugged a bit on the serpentine and noticed the crank turn slightly so Im pretty sure she didnt seize the engine. (fingers still crossed on that one).

Having a fan like sound apparently coming from the gas tank, but different than what everybody is saying is the fuel pump- its not a whirring sound under the drivers seat and not while the engine is running. I have heard this a couple of times after the engine has been off a few hours of sitting in my garage, and then after a few minutes it goes away. The last time, I opened the fuel filler cap and the fan sound stopped immediately.

When I drive with windows down I can hear a whirring from the motor. Its like if it is low on power steering fluid. Its not constant with RPM. I am pretty sure the steering is electric but WTH can it be? I am dreading winter cause I will have windows down all the time then and I will have to crank the stereo to block it out.

I have a 99 voyager that has started making a whirring sound this last week. The water pump, serpentine belt, tensioner have all been replace several months ago. The battery light came on for about a minute and then went off the last night. I checked the voltage with the engine running and it measured 12.5, the same as when it is off. When I revved it up the voltage went up to 14.4 volts. Is this normal? What could be making the whirring sound?

So, last night I was driving with radio off and a "whirring/fan" sound was audible in the rear of my 2002 SC430 - a sound that I have never heard. The sound seemed to resonate from the driver side, access panel (which I believe holds fuses and other systems for roof). After the vehicle was stopped and restarted the sound continued. Now today, I insert the key into the ignition - no sound; turn to accessory - sound is audible; started vehicle and did not hear sound. Second time I repeated and sound was heard; started and did not hear sound, Third time I repeated and no sound heard in accessory start position. What the heck is this? Any diagram of the trunk and what components are housed in the center bay? Does this vehicle have any auto-leveling function that activates?
