I just purchased a 2011 Camry back in August and it has developed a bit of an issue.
I am getting a musky / mildew odor coming from the vents with the normal outside air blowing into the car. However, when the AC is on and running the odor goes away.
I have tried looking online for this issue, but it seems most people have the opposite issue - having an odor only when the AC is running.
I am a first time toyota owner. I have a 2011 Camry which was purchased NEW in november. I have 6000 miles on it and thea/c smells like MILDEW. Took car into dealer todayand all they did was spray foo foo juice and my car now stinks to high heavens. Nobody told me a toyota would smell llike mildew. What is this and what do I do to fix it. I am scared to drive this car as some have told me it is probably MOLD in the ac.
View 14 RepliesI recently purchased a used 2006 Honda Pilot. I now notice a mildew/musty smell that appears to come from the ac vents. I only notice it when driving with the windows down, right after I turn the AC off, and sometimes when I first get into the car. I do NOT notice it when the AC is running or when the fan is blowing. I have had the car detailed twice (thinking the odor was coming from the upholstery) and have hired someone to spray an odor eliminator spray into the vents and air intake. I have also changed out the cabin air filter. None of these actions have worked and the smell remains. I love the car but this odor is really annoying me.
View 2 RepliesA couple of times a year, I get a foul smell out of the vents when I start the vehicle. If I roll the windows down, the odor goes away after a minute or two. I have changed the cabin filter twice now, as I drive quite a bit.
I have deduced that the condensate does not drip while the vehicle is turned off. I have tried multiple ways to get it to drip while off (i.e. circulated vs. fresh air when before vehicle turned off). I (as many people in the world) park in an inclined driveway. I have tried backing in so that the front of the vehicle is in a declined position.
In all instances, condensate does not drip from the evaporator while off. I can let the vehicle sit for hours and check my driveway prior to starting. It will be bone dry under the vehicle. If I start the vehicle, I will have a puddle about 10-12 inches in diameter within 30 seconds of starting the vehicle.
Now that the weather has gotten very cold, I used the rear windshield defroster a couple of times this week. The smell that it emits is absolutely disgusting, I had to turn it off. The front defroster isn't much better. What could be causing it? Also the rear defroster, when working, defrosts the window in a "V" shape, meaning the center is clear but the sides and top/bottom are still frosted. I have a 2014 GLS.

Whenever I start my car in the morning or when leaving from work, my A/C has a strong musty, moldy odor. It slowly dissipates as I drive (and switch to non recirculate). I haven't had the car but 4 months, but the odor is getting worse and worse.... I live in South Florida where the humidity is high, but never expected this!
View 14 RepliesI bought a New Toyota Camry in November of 2012. It is a 2012 model. Since we bought the car in November we rarely ran the AC. Well summer is in , and we recently began running the AC on a daily basis. About a month ago we began having a foul/musty odor coming out of the AC. We brought it to the dealer twice.
The second time we brought it back, the dealer told me that they believe the problem is my dogs.Because there was a very minimal amount of hair on the seat covers. Rat terrier and jack Russel. They are white and I noticed the hair thing after the first ride with us. So they do not ride in the car anymore. What upsets me the most is the fact the dealer wants to charge me to take the AC apart and clean it.
Told me the only reason they could account for the odor is pet dander. They did flush the ac through the drain hole and installed a charcoal filter. Same thing it lasted about 1 week. Is there a simple resolution to this? I am at wits end. Because it has under 10 K miles, I do not feel I should have to run the heater or do anything to get rid of the odor. It is hot enough here in Fl.
(2013 Camry XLE) - About a week or so ago I smelled a whiff of antifreeze. I checked and there were no obvious leaks or puddles and the odor went away almost immediately. It happened again 2 days ago, and although there was no noticeable loss of coolant I decided this time I decided to get a pro to check out the car. I took it into Toyota and they gave it a once over. I was informed that this is normal - the engine will vent something once in a while and that is what I was/am smelling. That doesn't make an once of sense - venting antifreeze?
View 10 RepliesI changed the gas cap on my car. This did not change a thing. I took to i believe reliable mechanic (has worked on car several times) and was told it is bad leak from the "sending" (I think) tube. I think it is the plastic? thing that sends fuel to the fuel pump. This is cracked.
View 5 Replieshow do I check the transmission oil on my 2011 Camry LE (2ARFE). I am curious as this car has 98K miles now and I cannot locate the dipstick for the Transmission oil. I got the car 2 years ago at 89K miles.
A technician once told me it's going to be a flush.
I only do 135 miles every week and I am located in Africa.
How do I check the transmission oil and how often should I change it?
After I use the AC, I get a bad smell. It smells like mold or mildew. I've tried a spray cleaner but the smell comes back. Is there a way to clean the system without tearing out the dash?
View 16 RepliesI've had this in old cars before but not a car less than a year old ! I have 5,000 miles on mine and everytime I start the car this summer it smells like sour ammonia or mildew. I'm gonna take it in soon but was hoping there was an easy fix. Everything I've read seems temporary.

I have a '07 Elantra Limited. Air coming out air conditioner has a fairly strong mildew smell. How can I get rid of the smell? Is there a drain plug somewhere in the ventilation system I can open to get rid of water?
View 3 RepliesI'm getting a mildew smell every time I turn on the AC in my Tiguan. Even if the car is warmed up and shut off for 5 minutes, when turned on again, the smell is there. It's a 2012 with only 15k miles and the cabin filter is brand new. I was thinking of getting the mold sprays to apply directly to the vents. What to do to resolve it?

My Gen 3 is just over a year old with 10K miles. Most times my HVAC is set Auto/75/AC on, and use no special procedures to vent the evaporator with non/cooled air prior to shutting off the car.
