View 1 RepliesI got a 2007 Camry 2.4 l4 engine under the hood and its didn't start this until we had a garage change the oil never did this when toyota changed it. Mostly when the engine is cold started there is a little bit of a rattling noise it will make until engine is warmed up and once its warmed up at times it will still sound kinda bad when it runs at normal engine temperature but this mostly occurs on cold starts and didn't start doing it until a regular garage changed the oil this never occurred when toyota dealership changed it
I don't know what kind of oil that was used in it last at that oil change but it started that about a week or so after that. Car currently has about 133,000 something miles on it ... Its not that loud of a noise but its noticeable when all doors are closed.
I bought a 2007 Mini Cooper, used, at a Ford dealership in August of 2010. For nearly two years I loved this car and didn't have to pay much in the way of maintenance. I bought the car at 55k miles, and now it has 92k. Over the past year, I have noticed a rattling noise at cold startup, and it was especially loud in the winter, and I also noticed that the car consumes oil. As the oil got lower, the rattling got worse, and whenever I topped off the oil the rattling stopped. I brought this up at the MINI dealership (where I get all my repairs on the car) during a routine oil change and they didn't take it seriously.
Well, Tuesday morning on my way to work, there was a sudden loss of power and the engine started missing bad. I was almost to where I work when the car just couldn't hold and idle and stalled. It wouldn't turn over after that and it sounded really "sick". I had the car towed to the dealer, where they told me the timing belt tensioner failed and it allowed the timing belt to jump "a great distance". Apparently, these are "interference" engines (a term I learned because of this incident) so the screwed up timing destroyed the engine. The dealer said it will cost 8,000 to completely replace the engine.
I recently obtained a used '07 Camry LE (2.4L with 120k miles) and thought to clean the throttle body when I changed the spark plugs. After putting the intake compartment and connecting everything back together (I'm assuming correctly), the air filter box along with the hoses seem to rattle a bit more. Today, I popped the hood after a short drive and discovered a on/off hissing sound -- it's possibly this sound started the day I worked on my car.
Thought I would post a video clip : [URL] ....
Every now and then I have rattling noise when trying to start on a cold start in the morning. Mainly just sounds like a dry start. Battery is good, oil is full (high mileage Valvoline 5W20). Ive tried 5W-30 and it didn't do anything, just made the mpgs about 1 less.
Ive had the car fixed for the main TSB issue with the starter/camshaft so that is not it, which caused a full on grinding noise.
Everyday commuter car, use 87 chevron gas always, and I just used Lucas gas additive the last two fill ups (used normally every 1k miles) and still getting the noise every now and then in the morning. Are there any better injector cleaners out there?
Should I get the fuel injectors fully 3step cleaned? when talking to the service rep at brake-masters, they stated that I should use 91 premium gas to work with dry starts to burn off extra carbon buildup. Wasn't sure if that was a good idea for a 09 corolla S?
93k miles, new spark plugs last week, oil changes every 3k.
I noticed recently that on my 2007 Camry i4 @ 110k miles, engine rattles pretty noticeably when I have the AC on AND while on reverse. Once I either turn off the AC or shift to D drive the rattle is no more. This noise is pretty consistent.
Not sure if this is a common problem, but could this be a problem with the water pump/alternator?
I just heard this noise today. It is right when i start the car in the morning. it is like a rattling noise, and it gets louder whenever i accelerate. But the thing is that after the car is warmed up, the noise is gone. is that normal? i checked the engine oil and it's close to full. and i cant see anythign wrong in my engine.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2003 Camry 4 cylinder with ~143K. When I start the engine I can hear a slight rattling noise. When I rev the engine the noise seems to go away (or it is just masked). I noticed the noise after the check engine light came on twice and I had it checked by an exhaust shop. The code was for an O2 sensor, but the exhaust shop said everything looked fine to them. This was about 7K ago. I jacked the car up a few weeks ago to check the exhaust for anything obvious, but couldn't find anything loose to explain the rattle.
I hit the exhaust pipe with my fist and heard a rattle a few times, maybe from the catalytic converter, but I am not certain. Everything runs/operates fine, smooth acceleration, fuel economy is unchanged, engine temperature is unchanged, but the noise persists. I don't know if it is just normal due to age and nothing to really worry about, or if it is the first sign of trouble. I have also noticed that I am using about 1/2 quart of oil between changes, but I'm fairly certain that started before this noise.
My car had some minor front end damage repaired by a body shop. Since I got it back the a/c takes longer to start blowing cold air. If I drive it daily the a/c starts up normally. But if the car sits for a few days, it may take anywhere from 3-5 minutes before it blows cold. I've taken it back to the body shop who has in turn taken it to a dealer and nothing was found.
View 2 RepliesFor the past few months when the vehicle is cold (by "cold" I dont mean physically cold, just mean it has been sitting all night in my driveway and it's still 90+ degrees outside) and I start driving, I seem to have this shimmy or shake in the tires/steering/steering wheel. Once my car seems to "warm up" (driving a mile or two) it goes away and my car is extremely smooth.
Could it be tires (I've tried rotating)? Suspension? Wheel bearings? I'm lost for even imagining what it could be. I don't believe it is engine/trans related, as it idles/revs just fine and shift perfectly...
2005 Camry SE 2AZ-FE 4cyl 5 speed manual bought new well maintained 119000 miles. Makes a funny noise on cold start up when temp is below about 20 deg f just the first start up of the day. The noise sounds like a ZIP and is just for a second or 2 at the most. I can feel it in the steering wheel like a high frequency vibration. Seems like it's doing it at not quite as cold a temp but has been doing this since the first winter I bought the car new.
Hard to isolate without a second person standing out there in the cold, definitely coming from under the hood. I'm thinking it could be the idler pulley. Serpentine belt is original but has no cracks and is properly tensioned. Since it's done this since day one I'm hesitant to start pulling things apart. Car runs great aside from that. Mobil Super High Mileage oil 4,000 mi change interval, Toyota Filter always. The noise is just after the engine initially fires not starter related in my opinion.
My 2010 Camry SE 4cyl started a cold/dry starting at 33K miles. Took to the dealer in Feb 2011 and they performed the TSB below:
2010 Toyota Camry Engine And Engine Cooling Service Bulletin 59978
NHTSA: Action Number: 10034924 Service Bulletin Number: 59978
Report Date:
Jun 09, 2010
Component:
Engine And Engine Cooling
Summary: Toyota: brief engine knock/rattle noise cold startup. Immediately following a cold soak startup, some model vehicles equipped with the 1ar-fe and 2ar-fe engines may exhibit a brief knock/rattle noise from the engine compartment for approx 10 seconds.
Then 3 months later ( July 2011 ) same problem....Dealer preformed same TSB and one day later..........Same problem............
My car has been out of service for 28 days this year.
I have an 07 SE (manual transmission). In cold climates has noticed a noise at startup on a cold engine when the temperature is below freezing (colder than -5C or so)?
The engine has to be cold (like sat overnight) and the outside temp has to be cold. Then at start when I turn the key, the engine starts fine, but as I release the key from the start to the run position I hear what sounds like the starter motor make a noise (short zipping sound).
At first I wondered if it might be slow to disengage, but if that shouldn't make a noise because the gears should be meshed ok? There is no noise with a warm engine, or with a cold engine on a mild day.
What would cause a sputtering noise to come from the engine but only after a cold start meaning starting in the morning and after work but goes away after I drive for a min or two and doesn't come back until the next morning or after work. It sounds almost as if say you had a hole in your flange and drove it around. Its really weird it happens a few times a week for the psst 2 weeks but hasn't happens ever before that. Could it be the water pump in its way out? Oil levels fine fluid wise everything topped off.
View 4 RepliesI have the cold start up noise on my 2AZ-FE Camry. It is from the VVT gear.
I have found the Solenoid on the back side of the engine but can't locate the bolt that has the screen inside it.
Where the VVT oil screen is located on this engine?
I bought a 2005 Camry about 3 months ago. It has the 2.4l 4 cyl with about 139k miles. The car seems to run perfect, but it has a rattle noise right at start up on cold mornings. It only lasts for the initial 1/2 second start up, then it's gone. I'm thinking it's probably just a heat shield rattle or something, I just did a full synthetic high mileage oil change on it and that didn't work, so that just makes me lean more towards heat shield.
View 14 RepliesI recently had TSB 0146-10 ( grinding noise at cold start ) performed and my cold starts are even louder now. My dealer screwed it up 2 times and I have to return again due to this noise, leaking valve covers, and lots of metal filings found in oil and filter? It seems to me Toyota has a big issue with the VVT cam gear on this engine and wanted to post a video of my cold start?
My vehicle is a 2010 RAV4 with the 2AR-FE ( 2.5 ltr ).
This is after 2 cam gear replacements and the dealer confirmed this to be the sound of a bad VVT gear.

My Camry 2grfe now has almost 60k miles and it started making a squeaking/dry bearing noise but it goes away after about 2 minutes of running. I was going to replace the serpentine belt when I get a chance, its a tensioner or a pulley bearing? Can the bearings in the tensioner or pulleys be replaced instead?
View 4 RepliesMy '07 I4 has 92K on it, I have only owned it for 450 miles of that. It has a bit of a rough idle sitting at a light, but fine otherwise, it did stall on me once at startup. I put some Seafoam in the fuel tank and ran that entire tank, I now have regular gasoline in it. The rough idle isn't any better but I have another issue.
The day after putting in the Seafoam, on a cold startup (36 degrees), I had a lot of valve/lifter/injector/VVT ticking, not sure which. It was worse that one time and it lasted for the first 4 miles of driving and only ticked when I was under load, not at idle.
As time has progressed I have no serious ticking, but it does make a louder ticking/rattling/clacking, whatever you want to call it, until it warms up, about 4 miles.
I heard reference to VVT issues or VVT gears, I'm used to my '06 Tacoma V6 and I know nothing about this issue.
07 Santa Fe 3.3 with 155k miles has lifter noise all the time. Much more pronounced in cold weather upon start up when the engine is cold. These miles are mostly highway and I change oil every 5-6k with Citgo synthetic blend. Is this just normal wear or could the engine be getting gummed up? I was thinking about treating the engine with some Marvel or Rislone but I really don't like putting solvents in my crankcase.
View 3 RepliesI just bought 2011 Camry 2.5 6auto with 57k miles on it. The car make a rattle noise for a second or so on a cold start when sets overnight. I took it to the dealer yesterday and they replaced the timing gear assembly under warranty. This morning when I started the car in the morning it made the same rattle noise. I am going to take it back to the dealer next week.
My question is has any one had this rattle noise? if so, did the noise go away after the dealer replaced the cam gear? Also, Do you think this rattle will affect the engine in the long term?
