Camry :: 2006 LE - Power Steering Fluid Loss?
Dec 9, 2014
My wife was driving yesterday from work and suddenly felt the steering becoming hard to steer so she was able to drive home but barely made it to our driveway (very hard to steer). I saw fluid dripping down the right side of the car. I opened the hood and saw lots of brown fluid spilled all over. Power steering fluid reservoir was empty. So my question is, is this primarily caused by power steering pump failure causing spillage of fluid contaminating the drive belt causing it to slip (car overheated a little bit) or Serpentine belt failure (120,000 miles with original belt) causing power steering pump to fail and eventually leak fluid.

I recently had the high and low pressure tubes on my power steering fail causing a total loss of fluid. After about a week of living with manual steering, I brought it in and had the tubing replaced. Everything worked fine, though the steering felt a bit sloppy to me. Today, on my way home from a 100 mile trip, the car decided that turning left just wasn't something it wanted to do.
So to turn left, I would have to back up and turn the wheels to the right. Not exactly an efficient way to drive in traffic. Do I try to get the car back into my mechanics place to see if he can fix it for a reasonable amount, or should just bite the bullet and look for a newer car? BTW when I had brought the car in for the tubing replacement, they showed me where the bracket holding the strut on the left had begun to crack, probably from driving without the power steering. 1998 Malibu LS ....

A family member did a tune up on the car and did not realize that the power steering reservoir had a HOT and COLD min/max lines. He filled up to the max line for HOT while the car was completely cold. He also filled up with Prestone Power Steering fluid with Stop Leak instead of ATF/DEXIII.
The car was driven a few times for maybe 50 miles in total before I found out about all this and I drained the fluid out to the appropriate levels. However the steering at low/parking speeds is still very tight (tighter than what I used to remember, at least).
Did he royally screw up the power steering system here? What can I do?

I blew a power steering cooler line yesterday and lost a bit of fluid. Removed and replaced the line, consequently losing most of the fluid in the system (during line replacement). Re-filled the system and now i have great power steering when driving but none at idle. If I bring my RPMs up about 150-200. I get it back in full force. Could my PS pump be on the way out or might this just be air in the system?

I need to replace the power steering hose because my power steering fluid is leaking. Is this the right part? [URL] .....

So I've been noticing my power steering in the reservoir has been going down for quite some time. Now its more noticeable than ever. Just about a month ago I topped off the tank to the "max" line and now its at the "min" line. I also notice the fluid on the garage floor. I've always had a lot of grease (I assume the fluid) all around the body and under the reservoir under the hood. It seems to be leaking from the hose where it connects to the actual reservoir. Maybe the clamp is bad or something.

The Power Steering Reservoir has a small leak that makes the area under it looks oily and messy, so i followed a member's DIY PS flush, I used Walmart Supertech ATF Dexll/lll fluid but now I am thinking about using Mobil1 Synthetic ATF once I get the reservoir out.
The new red color shoes the leak is coming from the edge of the connection between the top and bottom plastic parts of the reservoir.
so my questions are:
1- How do i remove/pry or pop the reservoir out of its bracket?
2- Can i use JB Weld epoxy to glue/reinforce them parts together or just pick a used one from junkyard?
and last question: What size ID/OD is the PS fluid low pressure hose?

My power steering fluid reservoir is a little low. Which type or brand of power steering fluid should I fill it up with?
I know that I should use Dextron III, but does the brand matter? Or can I mix the OEM fluid with an aftermarket fluid.

My Camry 2011 (55k miles) had complaints of power steering fluid leak and needs rack and pinion assembly replacement.
I have powertran warranty only, so this one is not covered and when asked for the dealership for estimate, they said it would cost around 1700$.
Can i get this replacement done at local shop, if so will there be any problem to my powertran warranty ?

My daughter's 2007 Sonata 4 cyl (88k miles) has an occasional power steering loss. It has only been noticed right after slowing down from highway speed. Total loss for a few seconds then comes back. No dash lights or noises, just steers like an old classic without power steering - then can.
This is kind or a repeat post from another individual but he had a V6.
SBR711 recommended replacing the Harmonic balancer and I am inclined to do so but parts guy at Hyundai said that typically is not an issue in the 4 cyl model. So he does not keep item on hand.
Fluid is fine, clean and proper level. No screeching etc..

I've got about 80K miles on my '06 Sonata and the weather conditions were on the very wet side.
At first I thought I heard a squealing sound which I just credited to either a radio or windshield wiper sound while cruising through some twisty coastal roads. The rain was coming down pretty good and a small amount of standing water of already on the road.
As I continued my drive I began to notice an occasional loss of power steering for a split second through some turns accompanied by that same belt squealing sound. At the same time the battery light also came on for a split second which indicated to me possible engine failure for a split second. Even though it was for only a split second it really freaked me out to think I could end up crossing the center lane or over into the ditch. I then slowed my pace for the rest of the trip. When I stopped for gas I popped the hood and things appeared to be normal and with plenty of power steering fluid.

Filled up my power steering every 3 days this week. Finally climbed under the car and saw this. How difficult or expensive this will be to fix? Is it just replacing the rubber boot or is it more severe?

I recently was looking over fluids and whatnot in my 08 Camry, and the power steering fluid level was at the upper line for hot about 3 hours after I drove it (about 7pm). Checked again at noon the next day, still didn't budge. I know this is something fairly new, earlier in the year it was normal. The steering feels a little tough too. It might be me, I've been driving a 2011 Sienna with the EPS, but I don't remember it being this resistant.
Now the car has over 43k on it, and it recently had the water pump replaced about two months ago put in the the dealer (I noticed this, not the dealer), along with front struts and an oil change. Nothing mentioned about the Power Steering or anything, but it seems abnormally high. I am not sure if any of the PS lines had to be removed to do the job (water pump or struts), but if it was, it seems that it might have not been properly bleed. I did try turning to full lock a few times, to the point where the revs drop and it squeals a little (not sure if that is a pump issue either, not the drop in revs but the noise)
I am just trying to figure out why I have a high level of fluid now, and the power steering feels a little weak.

just found out about this a few days ago. It seems that the leak is between the fluid container and the tube. I just used some zipper to tighten up the connector. Where to buy this tube and the steering wheel fluid, and how much are they? My car is a LE V6 2007.

I just realized that my power steering fluid is leaking. It is reddish color and it is at the base of the windshield on the passenger side. my car has 40k miles. Is this normal and is this considered as power train and is it still under warranty. This really sucks to think that I bought the Camry for reliability.

I had been driving around with gallons of ATF in my trunk for a year until I recently had the power steering pump changed on my 1996 Toyota Camry (which spent many winters sitting outside up in Canada), and now the leak seems worse. I brought it to my mechanic who wants $800 to change a leaky rack & pinion and a hose. But I am but a poor, unfortunate grad student and so I have no more money to put on this old, yet beloved car! So he suggested I put in a combination of ATF and brake fluid, which might slow down the leak. What say you? Will I ruin my newly acquired power steering pump or make matters worse?

Just checked out at 2003 V6 LE with 120k miles for $5500. Car seems to be in excellent mechanical condition but I did notice quite a significant power steering fluid leak, seems to be coming from the reservoir. I see that there are two hoses for about $80 each listed on Partsgeek.
Is this a common problem, can the clamps just be tightened, Could it be the reservoir it's self or even the pump too high a pressure?
Seems to be quite a lot of fluid running down the side of the car but after taking it for a test drive I didn't see any signs of it squirting out so perhaps it's a slow leak and been leaking for a while.

My 2006 Sonata V6 (88k miles) has an occasional power steering loss. It has only been noticed right after slowing down from highway speed. Total loss for a few seconds then comes back. No dash lights or noises, just cant steer - then can. Did all required maint. until 60k then just oil changes by me. Have read other forums about fluid flush, but that was for noise and I don't have any noise. This has happened with and without the Electronic Stability Control turned on. Other than that, runs great. MPG is about 25 or so (wish was 30 or so).

2002 camry: my boyfriend just told me he accidentally added power steering fluid to the brake reservoir a couple monthes ago....while i floored it on highway, i only reached 40, when let off gas, car came to a quick stop. later i jacked up rear and was able to turn back tires to rule out e-brake being stuck, when car is in nuetral and pushed (forward or backward) it comes to a stop whithin a foot or so ( it seemed like the brakes were being depressed) possible transmission or brake issue?

Symptoms:
-Car "Surges" at any speed. Loss of power is significant.
-Check engine light is on , DTC code = P0420
Tried:
-Fuel injector cleaner
-Spark plugs replaced around 40k miles ago
-Checked for leaking valve cover gasket (oil in plug wells) None
Can a clogged fuel filter cause this? At idle the car is fine, the symptoms seem to only occur when car is under load (In drive). My son drove this car an it always seemed empty meaning he never put much gas in it.
