I have a 2003 Camry and the steering started getting hard. It got worse with time. I changed the power steering pump and no dice. Next I have just completed a rack and pinion replacement. After each change I have no improvement. The steering has hard and easy spots not hard all the way through.
View 4 Replies2.4l std. The steering started getting hard to turn intermittently. I pushed the fluid and took out the reservoir and cleaned the screen. It was pretty dirty and smelled kind of bad. The belt looks ok and there are not strange noises or leaks. I figure it's the pump but I read a lot of posts where the pump was changed and problems persist. Also, I've never had a bad power steering pump so I don't know the symptoms. Is this simply a bad pump?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2003 Camry 'SE Automatic with almost 18,000 miles - that's right, low mileage. This week the steering wheel started making squeaky noises when I turn it. It doesn't matter which way I turn, it will squeak and it doesn't happen all the time. Should I be worried and what can I do about it?
NOTE: This started happening the day after we had got an 1 or 2 of snow. That morning when I opened the door to get the brush/scraper and little snow fell in the driver's side of the car. Perhaps a little fell on the steering wheel.
I started noticing my wifes 2009 SE was hard to turn sometime back. I finally checked under the hood and saw this. I'm not sure which hose is which but could the clamps be causing the leak? I've got ATF Dexrom III and a turkey baster with plans to try and flush it (the long way) this weekend.
View 5 RepliesDriving home from movies tonight, I lost power steering and power brakes and the pump started growling. Looked in the reservoir and it was all foamed up. Within the last 20k mi I have flushed the system and refilled with power steering fluid. No apparent leaks at this time. And happened like someone flipped a switch. Fine one turn, nothing the next. What are the chances this is a fluid issue and not a mechanical one? Start with flushing system and adding Mercon V? Or is it likely pump is damaged?
View 7 RepliesMy car's about 1.5 years old and 10k miles. About a week ago I started noticing that the power steering got a fair amount heavier/stiffer: it's suddenly a bit harder to turn the wheel. It came out of nowhere and I can't identify a cause, and the local dealership couldn't find anything wrong with the car. (2012 SE I4)
Since it's electric power steering I'm not sure what could have gone wrong here... and while it doesn't make the car un-driveable, it is rather annoying. The tire pressure is still around 37 PSI (according to the sensors) and they're Michelin.
I have an 07 Camry with a hard to turn steering wheel. I had to replace the high pressure hose from the rack due to a leak. After that I basically bled the system as one would do under normal circumstances. With the cars front wheels off the ground I turned the wheel hard left and right. The wheel did give a bit but not to the point of perfection. After many turns I put the vehicle on the ground and repeated the process. The fluid no longer leaked but the stiffness was still there.
The hose was replaced at 110,000 miles. It's currently at 112,000 miles
I posted last month that I have hard steering when stopped while stepping on the brake. Feels like there is no power steering boost at all. The dealer claimed it was a failure in the steering box due to a leaking seal. Replaced the box. Not fixed. Dealer now says it is normal; there is not enough pumping capacity or pressure at idle to operate both the brake booster and the power steering booster. Its true that when I ease off on the brake a little and let the truck roll even just a little bit, I get steering boost.
I need a handful of guys with trucks like mine (02, 250, PSD) to go check their trucks, and let me know if they behave the same way. Mine turns with steering boost as soon as I ease off the brake and let it roll a little, but at full stop is feels like no power steering; very hard to turn wheels, and pump makes a slight growl (more like a grinch) just as if it was at a full turn stop.

View 7 RepliesThe problem makes the car unsafe to drive. The quickest way to describe it is a hard pull to the left after a very linear steering feel. My perception is almost as something is holding on and then just fails and lets go and the car quite abruptly shoots left in a very unsafe manner. Here are the things I have done to remedy the situation, I replaced the struts with factory replacements 15,000 miles ago. At the same time i replaced the left and right axles, drove the car with the problem then last weekend, I replaced the upper tie rod arms, and lower tie rod ends, the sway bar bushings, and the control arms on both sides. I literally feel as though it is a darn near new front end.
Just yesterday I had 4 new Goodyear eagle tires and an alignment done and the problem became more pronounced and worst. I really like this car and want it to be a joy to drive as I know from others these little hatchbacks are a real joy on winding mountain roads.
So 2 weeks ago I noticed that after 30 minutes of driving on the highway my steering wheel started making a loud growling noise and vibrating really hard! When I hit the brakes it got worse but got better as I slowed to 30 mph. It doesn't happen all the time and not right away, only after a while of driving and the dealership says without codes they can do nothing...
View 7 RepliesJust checked out at 2003 V6 LE with 120k miles for $5500. Car seems to be in excellent mechanical condition but I did notice quite a significant power steering fluid leak, seems to be coming from the reservoir. I see that there are two hoses for about $80 each listed on Partsgeek.
Is this a common problem, can the clamps just be tightened, Could it be the reservoir it's self or even the pump too high a pressure?
Seems to be quite a lot of fluid running down the side of the car but after taking it for a test drive I didn't see any signs of it squirting out so perhaps it's a slow leak and been leaking for a while.
My 96 Camry runs great (191K) and tracks well while driving; and the steering feels just fine (not loose, no vibration) while traveling straight or on roads with slight bends. No vibrations at all. When I have to make a turn (left or right), the steering stiffens, at first, but when continuing to rotate the steering wheel it eases up and feels just fine. If I have to make a sharp turn, it will go through two or three of these hard/soft cycles. The change between hard and soft is not abrupt. No noise accompanies the hard/soft change; only the effort needed to rotate the steering wheel changes. Rounding the corners, the car tracks just fine and smooth as it always had. No loud power-steering pump noises, at all, under any condition. P/S fluid full; and the fluid does not look dirty, though I don't know the age of the fluid (I bought the car used about a year ago). I have no P/S fluid leaks.

My education on this site says it's the CV joint. So, how urgent is it to get this fixed? The car is getting used probably less than 8K miles/year.
View 4 RepliesI have driven 53K miles in the Bay-area, CA on my car. On a recent trip to UT and AZ, my steering wheel started wobbling when I braked downhill. And I started hearing the occasional screeching noise when I braked, when I listen closely. I took to the local auto-care chain back in bay area and they said, I needed my front rotor and brake pads replaced. I however had no such wobbling on plains. Hence I wasn't sure if I was being over sold on parts. I got the car back without replacing the pads or rotors. I took a picture of the brake inspection readings. Wanted to get an advice if I need to replace my rotors or not. I understand the brake pads need replacement from the screeching noise. But how about the front-rotors?

The next time it is started it will start fine but when you are going down the road if I try to accelerate it will start backfiring and not pick up any speed. I am getting a lean code on both banks. I noticed it was lacking a little power one day and the next day a little more so,Then the third day I was heading out to the Doctor (50 miles away) I noticed the truck was slowly and gradually getting worse to where it was hard to even do the speed limit on the highway and the light started blinking so I headed straight to the nearest Advance and had them pull the codes and it gave us 172 bank 1 too rich and 174 bank 2 too lean I replaced the two top o2 sensors (advance sold me)same thing....... plugs, wires, coil, air and fuel filters are all new... checked the PCV hoses all look good, I'm a cancer patient and need my truck for Dr's and treatments and no money to randomly buy parts, I have seen people pointing to intake gaskets and isolator bolts... Does this motor have a track record of this being a common problem?
View 4 RepliesMy 2010 Camry (4 cyl, auto) die again and again while I am driving. It is a big safety issue and I am wondering about the Toyota Quality. Why Toyota haven't fixed this serious issue. The brake stops working and the steering become really hard to move. So, there are very good chances of serious accident.
I went to a Toyota dealership and they replaced the battery and its cable and reset the check engine and skid control lights and told me to drive a while to see whether problem persists. Later same day both lights came again and car started doing the same. On my way back I went to Auto Zone to check the codes (because Toyota dealer closed at 4:00 on Sat) and I got the codes P0101 and P0171.
I will take it to the Toyota dealership again but I am seriously thinking to change this unreliable car with 73K miles.
2010 camry LE
A family member did a tune up on the car and did not realize that the power steering reservoir had a HOT and COLD min/max lines. He filled up to the max line for HOT while the car was completely cold. He also filled up with Prestone Power Steering fluid with Stop Leak instead of ATF/DEXIII.
The car was driven a few times for maybe 50 miles in total before I found out about all this and I drained the fluid out to the appropriate levels. However the steering at low/parking speeds is still very tight (tighter than what I used to remember, at least).
Did he royally screw up the power steering system here? What can I do?
2003 passat v6 4motion. Its hard to steer when your stopped... As soon as you move its ok, I don't see any leaks. Are these bad for pumps?
