The engine of our 2003 Camry (4 cylinder, automatic) is making a loud rumbling noise when stationary, both in drive and in park. The rumbling can be heard and felt, especially via the brake pad, and it persists when the car is driving at below highway speeds.
View 2 RepliesProblem that developed after our 03 xle got whacked by a Harley in the right front wheel. The repair shop changed out the spindle and wheel but we got it back with a loud humming noise over 40 mph. The shop said it was the axle shaft bearing and not related. I argued and the insurance company reluctantly agreed to replace the shaft,bearing, and housing. Got the car back and again, the same humming only less faint and obviously coming from the trans. Everyone is dodging responsibility and it looks like we are left to sort things out on our own. Figures. This car road perfectly prior to the accident. I can't find any online diagrams of the trans to see what the shaft fits into. Supposedly the shop is holding on to the old shaft, I was going to go and look at the end splines, I believe that's what it has.
View 2 RepliesJust bought a solara at 114k and after about a week I noticed that when my AC is on that car rumbles a little more than it should and loses rpm... when i turn the AC button off the rumbling stops. Also, after a long drive with the AC on if I go to start my car the next day it may not start the first time or it idles really low at 500 RPM and then stalls and i may have to start it a few more times before it gets going... I'm going to get it checked by a mechanic soon but I wanted to know how urgent it possibly is...
View 6 RepliesMy truck is currently stock and recently started making a knocking noise louder than it usually does. I researched and have found the injectors can make a knocking noise when not performing correctly. I took it to a local shop who hooked it up to a snap on scan tool and ran some tests. It passed the Buzz test but continually failed the contribution test on cylinder 8. I'm going to go home and remove valve cover and unclip the injector to see if the noise goes away. I'm sure hoping it does as an injector by the looks of things is definitely the cheaper option. I'm scared because if I was listening to a gas powered truck and heard the sound my trucks making I would assume it was a lower end noise. My truck only has 148,000 miles....
View 14 Replies2013 Camry SE. I hit a curb pretty hard on the right side. Dealer replaced both tires and wheels and lower control arms on the right front. $2,400. Now I notice a low level rumbling starting at 45MPH or up. Very little change in the noise as speed increases.
I'm wondering if they missed a damaged bearing that is causing this noise? I had the dealer test drive it and they can't seem to hear it.

The car idles pretty rough & loud but ive noticed its only when im in 'drive' with my foot on the brake, at stop signs/lights. Its also much worse when the engine is cold. It settles right down if I come to the stop and shift into 'park'. So as I roll to a stop and hold the car in place with the brake the engine starts vibrating.
I dont know much about these things but it almost feels like i'm restricting it by having my foot on the brake and the engine wants more gas or air or something (could be way off base, but thats how i perceive it)
The RPMs sit around 1,000 and as the engine idles/rumbles it gets up to maybe 1,200-1,400 RPMs which i didn't think was significant but im pretty new to this.
Forgot to mention the most important thing- there is a rumbling noise that goes along with the vibrating, again only while stopped, goes away immediately when i pull off the brake and hit the gas.
2010 LE 4cylinder... Turning right has no noise, turning left of center gives a rumbling noise. Looked under the car for any damage or steering leakage and found nothing. Just 30K on the car still looks like new under there.
I could not find any steering problems in the stickies for this gen Camry. I could not find any TSB about this either...
So my car (2001 Civic) was having some issues that I needed to get worked out, so I was driving my mother's car for a few days. Within the first few minutes I knew there was something wrong, but I had so much going on that I haven't had a chance to get back to it for a while.
So she has a 2003 Toyota Camry with just 39k miles. Her work is about 2 miles away from home, so it basically gets driven there and to get groceries, and local clothes shopping. The car basically never sees the highway.
Hard to describe the sound, but it's like a loud rattling/vibration with every revolution of the front wheels. It sounds like it's coming from the front passenger side. Either the tire or the engine area. Here's a video of it on youtube. You can hear it pretty clearly under the road noise. It sounds kinda of like going over train tracks or something, and I'm only going about 45mph in the video. [URL] ....
So I don't know much about the car, but I am very familiar with my civic, so I checked out a few things. The tires appear to be in pretty good shape. About half the tread left with no unusual wear. I doubt it's the tires, cuz it really doesn't sound like tire noise. I checked the engine mounts and they appear to be in good order without cracks. Wouldn't expect an engine mount to go at 39k miles either, regardless of age. The car is garage kept.
Neither wheel has any side to side or up and down play like a bad ball joint, tie rod end, or wheel bearing would have. The steering wheel doesn't vibrate or anything. The sway bar endlinks appeared to be in good shape. I just changed the brake pads and rotors because of an unrelated issue. It didn't fix the problem.
A couple of things I will note: The belts are kind of dirty. It was really weird because half the belt is brown, the other half is black. It's basically split down the middle of one side. It's just dirt though, as I was able to rub some of it off with my fingers. The car was in a minor accident a couple of years back. It required me to replace the bumper and the passenger side headlight.

I am experiencing a loud noise which is getting worse from inside my engine compartment. I took off the heat shield assuming it was coming from the exhaust manifold but it is not. It sounds more like it is coming from the intake manifold. Now I would assume it was the intake manifold issue that has been described in many threads but it is not a vibration or clanging sound. It just sounds like air is escaping from my intake. What baffles me is that the sound is loudest in drive. Then neutral is the next loudest, then reverse there is very little unordinary sound.
I hear it a little bit when I am going like 15-20 MPH in reverse and let off the gas to decelerate. There is a noticeable noise increase just at idle too. I checked and all fluid levels are good. I changed the tranny fluid about a month ago and according to the dipstick it is right on where it should be. The sound is increasing and I am worried about what it may be. It sounds as if it has an exhaust leak but I do not see anything.
1987 Buick LeSabre V6 w/automatic transmission. Suddenly getting a fairly loud "knock" from somewhere in the engine area. Only present at low rpm or idle, goes away at higher rpm's. Does not seem to be related to vehicle movement. "May" change some with gear shifting but can not really tell. Oil is full and no "idiot" light warning. Timing belt recently changed. Car seems to run fine, just making noise. Any clues???
View 10 Replies2000 f150 182000 makes a rumbling noise from rear end mainly when turning at slow speeds. Thought it might of been axle bearings so replaced them this weekend to no avail. I have the 9.75 limited slip rear end but what I found out this weekend is that the axle bearings are for 8.8 , the 9.75 bearings was to big.
So does this mean I have 9.75 ring gear with 8.8 axles ? I have been using royal purple 75-140 with no friction modifier because royal purple says its it there.
But after doing some research Im going to go get some friction modifier and see if it works . So my question is how much of a pain is it to replace the clutch packs? What if I wanted to just put a different differential in and do away with limited slip ? Or go with a different aftermarket limited slip diff. ? what are my options , etc.
I bought a 2005 Camry LE 2.4 4 cylinder. It was rather loud while driving, but especially while accelerating. It had error code P0420 from the beginning. It had a completely broken torque strut which I eventually replaced. Afterward since it toned down the kicking from the engine, I was able to notice that I could feel and hear the engine kicking like a cylinder misfiring. The computer gave me error code P0353 (Ignition Coil C Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction) consistently, and only a couple of times gave me error code P0500 (Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction) which went away.
I swapped the ignition coil and spark plugs around but the error code would persist on the same cylinder. The spark plugs didn't look particularly worn but I'm not experienced on what bad plugs look like. The codes persisted still, but later on P0353 went away, and the obvious kicking stopped but it still ran with a lack of power and hesitating on acceleration along with a strong smell of fuel in the exhaust. I measured the resistance of each fuel injector and all measured the same. I removed and flushed each of them with cleaner, but same situation.
What do you think? I don't get the bad cylinder code anymore but something is clearly wrong. Bad fuel injector? Bad wiring harness? Bad compression or head gasket (maybe from the movement of the engine while the torque strut was bad)? Hopefully not the computer... And could the loud noise be related to this problem or is that probably just a cracked exhaust from when the torque strut was allowing engine movement?
My daughter's 2004 Camry V6 has been hesitating when starting from a stationary position or when accelerating after slowing down. Dealer has been having hard time identifying cause but thinks it is an oxygen sensor. Had one sensor replaced last fall when light came on. Tech Rep says there are four sensors. At least one is bad but the other two sensors may also be bad. Is there really four oxygen sensors in the 2004 Camry? Would this cause the hesitation when accelerating?
View 2 RepliesWhen the car is in neutral or in gear at a standstill there's a noise right around 1000rpm that sounds like a serious rattle or knocking. It sounds as if the car is puttering out. So essentially, I give it gas to around 2000 and then take my foot off and on its way back to idle it will putter at 1000rpm.
If the clutch is fully depressed or fully disengaged the noise is no different. I haven't noticed the noise in any other situation other than when the car is stationary but it's still a very disconcerting noise and likely just being drowned out by other noises when moving.
Does this sound like something engine related or could it be DMF chatter? Could I possibly pick up on an issue by running tests or logging with VAGCOM?
Some background on the car:
-Modified with APR Turboback and Stage 1/2 file 1.3 (the noise is present with and without tune file)
-I run 93 only
-Most miles are highway miles, currently sitting at 23k miles
-I don't notice any issues with shifting, albeit some slipping when tuned in 6th gear (no slipping when using stock file)
My 2003 Toyota Camry has over 100k miles. I believe the previous owner never changed the transmission fluid because it look black and smell burnt. I took it to an auto shop for them to drop the pan, change the transmission fluid and filter. How do I know if changing my transmission fluid and filter resurrected or killing my transmission?
View 19 RepliesI have a 2010 Elantra Touring, manual transmission. At about 30,000 miles it developed an odd feature which continues through the present time with just under 50,000 miles. At any speed and on any road from time to time I suddenly get a loud interior noise like driving right next to a train running on a track. There is no vibration, just a very loud rumbling sound drowning out the radio. Goes away after a few minutes, does not recur on the same piece of road, same temperature, or same time of day. When it first occurred the dealer inspected it and though they could not hear it they divined that the aftermarket cruise control mounting bracket had become loose and was vibrating. They tightened it and the sound went away for a year but is now back louder than ever. I checked the bracket and it is tight and the dealer can find nothing loose. The bumper to bumper warranty is about to expire. I am thinking a crack in a steel bearing surface or a bad weld causing a vibration running through the body. Again I feel no actual vibration through the steering wheel.
View 12 RepliesI have a Prius III 2011. I've had it for 10,000 miles and have had no problems at all. Yesterday, when I started the car, it made a loud rumbling and the engine shook, when it transitioned from the electric motor to the gas engine.
It did that several times when I restarted and then went away. The problem happened on the transition each time. Electric motor came on perfectly and then ten seconds later it was like an earth quake under the hood.
My dad watched the engine and said that it shook really hard. At first he thought it might be a fan belt but then he said it seemed more like water or something may have gotten into the gas tank and it was choking...
About a month ago my Touareg started making loud rumbling noises at highway speeds. It sounds and feels (it makes the whole truck vibrate) like you're driving on the "wake me up bumps" that are on the shoulder. Some times it last for 30 seconds and other times it goes on for the whole trip. It's driving me crazy; however the dealer can't reproduce the problem so they think I'm crazy. It doesn't do it all the time, however, the only common symptom is it happens at speeds above 65 mph. It has happened when it the car was cold and hot, cruise on and off and variable highway speeds. The transmission was replaced right after I received the car due to a malfunction, so the dealer doesn't think this could be a second faulty transmission.

View 10 RepliesMy daughter's 2004 Santa Fe (2.4L standard transmission) is making strange noises on start up which I think is due to a power steering issue as the noise is greater when she turns the wheel while stationary or when driving for the first 5 minutes or so until it warms up.
She came over tonight I she is about an 1 to 1.5" below the MINIMUM line on the Power Steering Reservoir.
Is there any special or proprietary Power Steering Fluid I need to be buying or what should I be buying to top this up?
I know there has been much discussion on using only Hyundai automatic transmission fluid over the years, but in this case it's for the power steering?
