Need to identify this noise? After starting the car after sitting overnight or anytime the engine is cold it makes this sound when shifted into gear. You can hear the sound dissipate and eventually go away but it has me worried.

I have a 2000 passat v6 with a automatic transmission, I was on the highway yesterday and 2x the car shifted down by itself from 5th to 4th gear. I noticed when I bought the car it had a slight tranny leak which I assumed was from the seal drying up because the previous owner let the car sit for a little bit. The first day I bought the car she hesitated going from 4th to 5th for like 3 seconds but every day after that it has been fine. I have been told by some people to flush it and get new fluid and a filter, and then other people telling me that the tranny fluid is lifetime and if you flush it your going to blow the tranny up.... What should I do, the day it acted up I got to where I was going then the car sat for about 2 hours and on the way home on the interstate it was fine like nothing ever happened. I drove it to work today there and back and again no problem.
View 1 RepliesMy car is 7k short of its drive train warranty expiring. I noticed a rumbling vibration when the transmission shifted between 3-4 gear at approximately 20-25 mph. Took it into the dealer, and their expert rode with me and verified that it indeed was vibrating, but that he had never seen this issue on the 2007 GS350 AWD. He said he would have to check around the country to see if others had this problem. Four days later, he advised me that he was told to flush the transmission 2-3 times and for me to drive it about 1k miles to see if that fixed it. Well, it doesn't do it anymore, but I'm not sure why, or that it won't do it again just after the warranty expires at 70k miles. I certainly don't want to look at a 4-6,000.00 transmission replacement after the warranty expires. The dealer obviously doesn't want to incur the expense either, under warranty. Even though the transmission does not rumble or vibrate anymore, should I ask for the replacement anyway?
View 6 RepliesMy 2002 Camry has an automatic transmission that works fine except when it is about 20 degrees or colder. The problem is that the transmission does not want to shift from first to second gear. After about ten minutes things shift normally. Other than that I have had no issues with the transmission.
View 3 RepliesI just got my transmission replaced with a used transmission. Ever since we got it, it had been occasionally slipping on 2nd to 3rd. I thought it was most likely just adjusting to the new car as it started to get a little better, but it got worse. On the way back from McDonald's, about 3 miles, I stopped 4 times and it happened every time. It mostly only happens when it's at or below 2 rpm but it's happened once above it. The rest of the gears shift nicer than they have before and 2nd to 3rd can be the same way just not all the time. I plan on taking it back on Monday. Is there already a new problem with this transmission?
View 5 RepliesYesterday morning, my 2010 had a very strange noise happen at startup. I'll preface this by saying that it was very early in the morning and I wasn't quite 100% awake, so the exact chain of events are a little foggy to me.
It was about 65 degrees when I went to start the vehicle in the morning. I noticed it was pretty humid out and the first humid morning of the year (I live in central PA). When I hit the power button, a very loud noise came from the engine area. It sounded like metal grinding and the motor having difficulty idling. I depressed the brake to attempt to put the vehicle in drive and the yellow "!" indicator light came on with a message on the on board display (i cant remember what it said). I shut the vehicle down and after a few seconds hit the button again..... same thing. This time, the idling and "grinding-like" noise went away and then the car seemed 100% normal. I noticed there was a little bit of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust while it was idling/grinding roughly.
Perhaps not the smartest thing to do, but I left for work and the vehicle has worked 100% fine since the mishap yesterday morning. In total, I have driven about 150 miles since the issue with no problems.
I read a sticky post concerning a service bulletin for engine knocking at start-up but what i heard seemed to be more than knocking and it was well above 40 degrees.
When I do a cold start-up and after about 5-10 seconds after start, I get this clicking noise coming from the rear passenger side. Almost sounds like something maybe gas cap is trying to lock or something. But when I hear this noise and even unlock the fuel cap I still get the same noise. I cant figure it out for the life of me. I even unlock and open the rear hatch... same noise. And after about 20 seconds of this noise then all of a sudden it goes away.

In 5th gear, cruising on highway, there's a low grinding/ rattling noise. it doesn't do it if you try to accelerate, or if you have no throttle input at all, meaning it only makes the noise when trying to keep one speed, typically around 2000-2500 rpm. If i grab the shifter and apply pressure in any direction, the noise goes away. I've owned the car for 3 years now and its always done it, and hasn't gotten any worse or changed at all. I'm experiencing no performance issues and just chalked this up to gear noise, but recently read someone else was having same issue, and everyone was clamoring on about needing new bearings.
View 14 RepliesI have a 2001 Honda civic. Great car, so far. I need to replace the catalytic converter, however I just passed smog shortly prior to the cc going out so I've been putting it off (bad, I know).
When I drive in the lower gears, 1st and 2nd, the car makes a much louder than normal ggggrrrrrrr sound. Don't know quite how to describe it. Especially when turning corners.
Do I need a new transmission? Does my needing to replace the catalytic converter have anything to do with this?

View 1 RepliesI just got my 08 Camry 4cyl 2 months ago. I noticed that when I start the car up and put the car into drive or reverse within 5 seconds of starting it up, it will jerk a lot. It seems like it's dropping it into gear hard. I checked this morning to see if the car is revving up when I do that and it is. It is sitting at 2000 rpm on startup. Is this normal and do I just have to wait a little bit before putting it in gear?
View 3 RepliesBought a 2011 Toyota Camry about 2 weeks ago. Noticed a few days ago a severe whine I think is coming from the transmission, when it is started. The noise goes away after about 2 miles of driving and the car seems to shift OK. The dealership says this is "normal", but I've not heard other Camrys doing this.

I had a mishap years back with front end hub bearings so I replaced with New Timken Bearings. Well that wasn't it but at least I know where I
stand with those. It starts making a noise when slowing down about 3-5 seconds before coming to a stop. I thought maybe the carrier bearing in
driveshaft?
Pinion bearing in rear diff? I need to service the parking brakes on rear so I may pull it down and go through it.
I drive a 2005 Camry SE. In the mornings, when I start it up for the first time, my engine almost...growls. That's the only word I can think of. Not even growl. But instead of purring like a kitten, it purrs like a tiger . And it's only when I first back it out and then take off. Once it's good and warmed up, it drives and sounds perfectly. Shifts beautifully.
And this morning, I let it warm up for awhile and it didn't make any noise when I took off.
I talked to my coworker about it and she said she had a similar issue with her 2004 Saturn Vue and it was something about a manifold, but couldn't remember what it was called. And she said her mechanic was able to fix it, but only temporarily and then told her it would cost her big bucks to fix it permanently.

I've got a 2016 250 6.2l and am getting a popping sound coming from the transmission area. the following is what i have figured out so far. the noise is made just before a complete stop, just as the tranny down shifts to 1st and can be felt through the manual floor shifter 100% of the time and heard roughly 90% of the time. sound ranges from not audible to loud and is random in how loud it is. the only way it does not do this is if i come to a stop in neutral or i go slow enough as not to have the tranny shift out of first from my last stop. the only other way is if i do one of those long, slow rolling stops. truck only has 6600 miles on it. i will be taking it in at 7500 for first service and have them look at it ...
View 1 RepliesSo I've had ongoing issues with this car that no mechanic seems to be able to diagnose. It jerks when I accelerate and decelerate pretty badly. It sometimes lets out a big cloud of smoke right when I start it. Now, it has developed some pretty violent shaking when I first start it up. It will only do this if the engine is completely cold and car has been sitting overnight. I feel like all these symptoms are related somehow. I have changed all the spark plugs and cleaned the throttle body. I've also had all the motor mounts replaced. I really wish the engine light would come on but it will not and never has.
It's really annoying that it only happens on startup so when I take it to the mechanic, well, they can't replicate it. What to try?
2002 Toyota Camry LE V6 136k miles Automatic
I have a 2002 2.4L Camry with 120K miles. I plan to keep it for another 10 years so want to get it in better shape. All I've done so far is air filters and changing the oil. I did let oil changes go way too long a few times then at 70K miles started emitting blue smoke only at startup after sitting overnight. It looks like valve stem seals so the engine uses oil now but it's tolerable and I really need to avoid spending big bucks unless there's a breakdown.
I've read about a procedure to replace the valve stem seals without removing the head using compressed air, but am a bit scared to try it for fear I will get in over my head.
I'm planning on getting up to date on all recommended inspections, changing spark plugs, coolant, air filter and cabin filter and plan on changing the oil from conventional over to 10w30 synthetic w/ subsequent 5,000 mile intervals from now on. I'm in a better financial situation now so can afford parts but want to try to do all labor myself unless a mechanic is necessary for something extremely important or critical.
Last night I was messing around with a bimmer. I was on 2nd gear, so i floored it and it wouldn't go in third gear. So I tried fourth and it wasn't going 4th neither. So i threw it in fifth. Started driving, I down shifted back into third, the car started shaking. Now the car shakes so much on idle. This all happen last night. I went home, and i checked out the coil packs. They seem to be fine. I was told it could be my spark plugs. So this morning,i replaced the spark plugs and coil packs and the car still shakes a lot on idle and when i drive it. I scanned it, and nothing pops up, no check engine light. My motor mounts seem good. I just recently got my um N/A tune. I feel like the tune is doing this. I have no clue whats the problem. I changed the spark plugs and coil pack for no reason. Also under my exhaust mid pips where the clamps are right after the cats. Water is leaking out. So i thought the gas station i went to, use water in their gas. Gas was low, so i put more gas, and still having the same problem.
View 24 RepliesSo when I shifted into 2nd gear as I was putting my foot on the leg rest beside the clutch by accident my foot tapped it for a second and it went down a bit. I didn't smell any burning clutch and don't recall the rpms going up. Is this a problem that a did that I am scared....
