I have a 2002 Camry LE V6 with 200K on it and have noticed that the steering feels very stiff while driving and turning. I have checked the fluid, air pressure on tires and that is fine.

Steering got stiff/lumpy driving to work today...trying to figure out if it's the rack or the pump.
Pump isn't squealing but makes a tiny bit more noise when turning left or right(when parked)...but I'm not sure its more then normal.
No leaking fluid. Fluid reservoir is filled to the correct level. No torn boots etx.
Steering feels fine driving straight down the road but when turning it's gets stiff and harder, esp going right.
When I make right turns. Its as if the power steering does not work. It is not constant, no issues making left turns, and seems to happen more often in cold weather. About 5 years ago i had a recall to replace the steering column and thought that may have been the issue but took my car in for the recall, they replaced the steering column and still have the same issue.
View 5 Replies2K 1.8T Golf. Lowered on Koni struts and neuspeed street (red) springs last year. Rear axel bushing done soon after. Replaced front and rear strut mounts and bearings at the time of struts and springs. Rack died on me in the fall so I had it replaced along with newer control arms and upgraded bushings. Aligned right after the rack was installed and ran like an arrow until last weekend. Now it pull to right, more as I speed up. I also noticed that when I turn left, the steering is much stiffer then steering left (full turns and mild turns).
PS fluid is still full. My ball joints are about 3 years old so I'm leaning towards that direction. Especially after this past winter and the never ending pot holes in Detroit. The shop used moogs and were regularly greased as they had zerk fittings. I think I hear some clunking upfront but I'm unclear as my old GHL Muffler weld finally gave out and is having by a hockey lace and it is rattling every time I accelerate or hit a bump. I'm going to jack it up this weekend to do some exhaust work so I'll give it a good once over and shake down what I can.
My car has occasionally been exhibiting some stiffness when turning left, a harder turn and when going more slowly (like parking). It feels like a loss of power steering. There's no squeal and the fluid is full, although I don't know the last time it was changed. So far it hasn't happened when turning right.
View 6 RepliesWhen I'm driving slowly and turning over a dip or bump, like driving out of a driveway while turning, I always hear something in my steering assembly clunking. Is it something I can tighten up, like a bushing? I know it's not the usual the abs system clunk, and it's a different sound from the echo inside the tires one may hear at low speeds.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2012 Camry LE with about 85K KM and had my alignment done and noticed that my steering feels very stiff. When i turn it left or right I can feel it very stiff. I never thought much about it until I drove my dad's 2014 Camry which has 10K KM on it and the steering is much smoother and feels lighter. We both have the Michelin Primacy MXV4 tires and my tire pressure is around 35 psi or slightly less.
Is it normal for the steering to feel tight? When I drive the car, there is no vibration and is very smooth. I don't feel like it pulls (it never did even without it). Should I take it back to the dealer to have it looked at?
I have a 2002 monte carlo, driving on the road it stopped running, wouldn't start, when i got it home it started but missing bad, I replaced the plugs and coils, didn't stop, tho one seemed to make it a little better, strangely I have noticed the power brakes don't work anymore, very stiff like standard, so may be connected as happened at the same time, searched for a vacuum line off, don't see one......
View 2 RepliesI have an 06 F-250 5.4 gas w/138k. It had recently had a lot of play on the wheel (15 degrees maybe) and last week I made the move to replace the gearbox with a redhead box. All seemed to go ok, but now the steering is stiff and it won't come all the way back to center after a turn. It turns smoothly and completely with no binding, but it has to be moved the last 1/3 turn back to center.
I flushed the fluid initially with Valvoline max life fully syn. Then second guessed myself after the problem started happening so I switched it back to regular Mercon. No improvement.
I had it on stands today and it was extremely difficult for me to turn my tires left to right manually (at the wheel). The only other thing I did was adjust the sleeve on the drag link to straighten out the steering wheel.
Should I be able to turn the tires left and right from the wheel easily? Every now and then I hear a whine from the pump which I never had before, but 99% of the time it seems fine and is quiet. it just feels like something is over tight but everything should be to spec.
I've noticed several times, already my heated steering wheel will automatically turn off at random times.
During the winter months i keep it on almost all the time, but noticed occasionally it just shuts off, and even gives the message in the dash that the heated steering wheel is off.
Last time it happened, i was driving for about 25 minutes, at a stop light. Whats odd is its been on for 45-60 minute drives with no issues.
I don't even think it could be diagnosed by the dealer since I don't know what the trigger is.
My 96 Camry runs great (191K) and tracks well while driving; and the steering feels just fine (not loose, no vibration) while traveling straight or on roads with slight bends. No vibrations at all. When I have to make a turn (left or right), the steering stiffens, at first, but when continuing to rotate the steering wheel it eases up and feels just fine. If I have to make a sharp turn, it will go through two or three of these hard/soft cycles. The change between hard and soft is not abrupt. No noise accompanies the hard/soft change; only the effort needed to rotate the steering wheel changes. Rounding the corners, the car tracks just fine and smooth as it always had. No loud power-steering pump noises, at all, under any condition. P/S fluid full; and the fluid does not look dirty, though I don't know the age of the fluid (I bought the car used about a year ago). I have no P/S fluid leaks.
View 15 RepliesMy sister has a Camry that has a squeak in the steering wheel occasionally when you turn the wheel. She lives in another state, and so I'm only going by her description, but I'll be visiting soon.
She describes it as an intermittent squeak/groan when the wheel is turned. I think it may be plastic on plastic, but it is definitely coming from the area around the column (up by the combo switch and ignition switch area), not down by your feet, she says.
I'm not sure of the year, but it is in the 2001-2003 range, I believe. I think this is just an annoyance thing, not a mechanical problem.
Changing the OEM steering wheel to something sportier? I have a 2002 1.8 Passat, without the multifunctional steering wheel. The wheel is huge. I am thinking of changing to a hree 'spoke' wheel, a la GTI or R32.
How would that effect the airbag? What about ease of turning?
Search of AF did not turn up any results. My 02 Silverado 4x4 Crew Cab 6.0 has begun to make a clicking noise when I am driving at low speed, and making any kind of turn to the right. This is in 2 wheel drive. No noise when driving straight. If I am driving through the neighborhood , (say, 20-25 mph), and the road curves gently to the right, I can hear an occasional/intermittent click noise, which sounds like it is coming from the LF wheel. It might give a single click every half second or so, sometimes 2 or 3 quick clicks, then silent for a second or 2, then a few more. If it is more heavily loaded, such as sharper turn, or more speed while turning, it is significantly worse, (more frequent clicks, almost constant).
Likewise, if I am at low speed, and turning more sharply, (such as a 90* right turn at an intersection, from a stop), it is almost constant repeat clicking until the wheel is straightened out. I am guessing it is possibly a u-joint on the left side half-shaft (or whatever it is called), that connects the transfer case to the LF hub? Almost sounds like needle bearings beginning to fail, is the best way I can think of to describe the sound. Even though I am in 2wd, the hubs do not unlock, so the front axles are always turning.
Hoping it is not front hub bearing going bad. I just got reassigned back to Dallas, and I will be driving the truck 800 miles to get there this weekend. I have maintained the truck very well, with the exception of having never even really looked at the front driveline components. (That ignorance could be haunting me now, or maybe just stuff that has worn out).
I only use the 4 wheel drive about 6-10 times per year, usually only for a mile or so to get to maintained roads. Never in 4x4 on dry roads, I switch back to 2WD as soon as possible.
Recently on my gen 6 with about 68k miles I have noticed a very pronounce noise when turning the steering wheel whether the car is stationary or in motion. It makes a loud creaking/popping noise and it cant be heard from outside the car. The noise happens no matter which way I turn the steering wheel. I know Toyota has had problems with their intermediate steering shafts.
View 5 RepliesSo my 09' Camry now has 130K KMs on it and for the last few months I've had an issue where when I turn the steering wheel (at rest and while moving) there is a clunking sound and feel in the steering wheel at various spots in the steering wheel rotation.
I'm worried the u-joints (if it uses them) in the steering column are worn out and might need replacing/lubricating but I'm not sure how to address the issue without an expensive Out of warranty visit to the dealer.
2002 Solara, 69K miles, occasional squeak from steering wheel when turning, sounds as if it is coming from where the wheel connects/rotates at the column - sounds like a weak rubber horn (like clowns use) or a rubbery, balloons-rubbing-together sort of sound. Not loud - only noticed when I was w/out the radio on (had an exhaust repair last week and was enjoying the quiet). It's not an external steering pump whine - it really seems as if it is coming right the steering column. Short of leaving cheese to there to coax out a mouse . . .
View 6 RepliesToday i went to the store and my toyota camry 2002 with 4 cylinder turn on fine. i came back home and car also turned on. after 3 hours, i decided to take a short trip but this time the car was not turning on. there is no cracking, radio and headlight dont turn on. i thought it could be the battery, i used a multimeter and see that i get a 12.6 volt but still no headlight or radio.
The battery is 3 1/2 years old but the fact i get a 12.6 v make me believe is not the battery. I get a little bit of light in the dashboard and when i try to turn on the car it looks like the dashboard light get dim as well as the indicator in the dashboard such as battery indicator, abs, oil etc.
The starter was changed 2 years ago. The car turn on normally before, no sign of long cranking or anything like that. So I think it is not starter either but not sure. when the starter went bad 2 years ago, there was no cracking but the car made a click sound when try to crank. Now there is no click sound and this is why i think it is not the starter.
I have a 2002 F250 diesel, the key will turn to acc. but not on. It feels like it is hitting something in the column. I tried moving the shifting lever back and forth with my foot on the break, as I turned the key but it would not turn. I am thinking the tumblers are OK because it goes into acc. It feels like their is some lever that is not releasing the shift lever, because if I turn the key hard the shift lever jumps. What is wrong, or how the interface between the lock tumbler and the shift lever works?
View 4 RepliesIt's the SIR ASM COIL. I replaced my steering wheel with a custom steering wheel and now this thing keeps the steering wheel stiff because these adapters for the custom steering wheel don't work with airbag equipped vehicles. What I currently did because I no longer need my airbag was I disconnected the airbag wires underneath the dash that clipped on with a yellow clip like most other wires are and then I clipped them where they entered the SIR ASM COIL so it would rotate freely but those plastic stops also gave me trouble so I broke them off and now the steering wheel rotates smoothly as the coil moves with it but I fear that there is something I overlooked with this part and I'm nervous about it. Is there anything else connected to this SIR ASM COIL besides the airbag wires? If so what do I do?
