C/K :: 1998 - Engine Firing But Will Not Run
Feb 24, 2005
I have a 1998 Silverado C1500 with a 5.0L V8. Since last Sunday, I've had two occasions (both first start of the day) where the engine will fire but not run. It turns over, sounds like it's started but immediately dies.
Possibilities???
1) The fuel pump does engage but I lifted the breather off and can't smell or feel any gas in the throttle body. Maybe fuel pressure? It's not all the time though.
2) I checked all relative relays and fuses in the engine compartment...they appear good.
3) After pulling and reinserting the fuses, I filled the bowl up with gas manually and it eventually started..after 15-20 minutes of off-and-on attempts. It doesn't die after it starts and then restarts just fine for a couple of days.
4) I filled up the tank last Saturday and did not have this problem prior to then..could it be bad gas? I have not used any injector cleaner or additive yet.
What could this be????

I had posted earlier about replacing the harness or at the very least the plug that broke off of the cam shaft sensor on our 98 Subaru Outback. Well, I replaced the plug, and the cam and crank shaft sensors as well and it is still cranking but not firing.

I went to start my car this morning it cranks and nothing it is not firing at all, and I do not hear the fuel pump when I open the door like I usually do. It just happened all the sudden. Is there a way to check fuel pressure in these in the W8? Also any known problems to make them do this? So irritating...

Got a 2004 Elantra that ran hot the other day. When it cooled down I added some water and tried to start it but it just spins over and over and is not firing. Had some trouble with it earlier in the day with the engine racing and feeling like it wasn't getting any power to the wheels. Anyway, after running hot it just turns over. First thought it was the timing belt being broke but turns out it isn't. What else could cause this? Have checked the fuses and none are blown. Acts like it has no compression at all.

Been having issues the past month with the car taking a couple times to start. It's very sporadic. Sometimes I'll only have this issues once a week. Sometimes once every other day.
Engine cranks it's just not firing. Almost like what would happen if you were out of gas. Sometimes it takes 2-3 times. Just yesterday it took about 5-6 times. Once started though the car seems fine. Drives fine, haven't really noticed any hesitation nor has it died while driving.
1.6 automatic
130,000 miles
no CEL on
new plugs at 100,000 miles
Changed the fuel filter when i noticed it happening and ran some fuel treatment cleaner in it.
We took it into the shop and of course every time they checked it out it started up fine. even left the car there for 2 days and started up fine for them. They said they couldn't really diagnose it as it seems ok to them.
Fuel pump going bad? Fuel pressure regulator going bad? Crankshaft position sensor going bad?

My wife was driving our Jetta (08 2.0T DSG) this afternoon when it cut off on her. She eased off onto the side of the road and tried to refire, but the starter was just spinning. I popped the hood and the oil was extremely low, so I thought that might be the issue. I put in a quart of oil and everything looked good...tried to start the car, and it's not firing at all. I disconnected the battery hoping that resetting the car would work, but the car just wouldn't turn over or fire...it's like the starter is spinning itself and everything else connected to the belt, but not the motor. I had to leave it about 30 miles away, but plan on going back out in the morning to mess around with it.

We have a 1992 Pontiac Trans Sport with the Chevy 3.1 V6 TBI engine.
Engine was running poor because of a faulty Coolant Temperature sensor (rusted-out pins). Changed the sensor and cleaned-out rust from the socket and now it runs smooth when cold with decent acceleration.
Problem is that cylinder #6 is not firing when engine is hot at operating temperature. Engine shakes lightly but performance remains good.
Distributor, rotor, spark plugs, spark plug wires and Oxygen Sensor were all changed 1 week ago with new ACDelco parts. What to check next?

I started the car the other day and it was running really rough and engine light was on. I started pulling the spark plug wires and pulling #3 didn't make any difference in terms of decreasing performance where the others all did.
I've replaced the plug, and distributor cap. I've also confirmed with the plug out of the block that it is firing.
I'm not sure at this point what to look at next. This happened overnight, not gradually over time, and apart from running rough the engine isn't making any noises which based on sound, and how fast it happened doesn't make me think its a scoring/compression issue.

i have a 1999 F-150 2x4 witha 5.4 liter v-8 with 151,000 miles. Last week the truck began to run rough when i accelerated (ideled fine)and felt like it wasn't fireing on all cylinders and was puffing white smoke. A few minutes later the battery light came on and the truck lost all power and shut off. I replaced the battery and alternator and everything ran fine for a week. Now the issues have come back but i'm not sure the alternator and batter have gone bad again. What could be going on? Have the coils gone bad?

I recently attempted to change out the clutch on my bug for the first time. All went well right up until I tried to start it. The starter kicks over, all the electrical works, but for some reason she's not firing. Upon removing the spark plug i found out there is no spark. The plug cables and plugs themselves are brand new, so I'm guessing that's not it.

The truck starts up fine. then after a minute or so it starts to spit and sputter and back fire through the intake then dies.
What could cause this? Intake manifold gasket leak?
Will a clogged fuel filter cause this?

I was having some problems and one of my friends told me to post up here before I went and saw my mechanic. So my car isn't starting (its a 06 r32). Now I've gone through a whole list of things and what I have worked out is that it is the spark plugs not firing (none of them are) although they are all brand new and were working not too long ago.
Battery is fine and fuses look good no warning symbols on the dash so I'm at a bit of a loss as to what it could be. Relays? Coils?

Diagnostic says 1 and 6 are not firing. Car runs rough slightly. I think one of them is intermittently firing the other maybe not at all.
Possible causes according to diagnostic:
coil, plugs, injector, vacuum leak, wires (From memory)
Gas mileage is excellent. This makes me think its injectors. Failing plugs or wires would cause massive gas loss through misfiring cylinder.
Just bought this car. The seller said the wires and plugs are new. I will inspect tomorrow when I do the brakes.
Assuming they were replaced it leaves coil, vacuum or injectors.

this car is a daily driver and ran very well it has 104,000 miles and well maintained. on a Friday night, it started to rain and my windows were down. my friend volunteered to roll them up and mistakenly left the key in the run position. I was unaware of this until Monday morning so the battery was completely drained. I removed the battery and charged it for about 12 hours until fully charged on a 3 amp charger.
The head lights were bright when I reinstalled the battery but I did not take a voltage reading although i believe it was charged up good.when I went to start the car it did nothing and the fuel pump is not running either. I removed the starter wire from the starter and with a remote starter jumped the starter.. it swirled over fine but no start with the key in run position . it has no fuel pressure and is not getting fire. this car is equipped with an immobilization unit for security.
Is it possible that this caused it to activate? my key also is equipped with a chip I was told by the (stealership) and I only have the one key with no fob to deactivate the security system. my owners manual say I can turn the key to the left in the driver's door to turn off the security also but it has no effect. it is the original key and is very old looking. I have exhausted every hunch I had to get this machine back on the road and I just know one of you tappet brothers is holding the solution to my problem.
