Ever third day or so, if I do not lift up on the lever that allows the steering wheel to be tilted, drops down on its own. It is a danger while driving to have the steering wheel move on you unexpectedly and a pain (pun intended) when getting out of the car and slamming your knee on the dropped down lever if I forget to lift it.
View 14 RepliesI am on my 4th Avalon and have loved everyone. This newest one, however is experiencing a slight steering wheel vibration intermittently at 70-75 mph. It also does not seem to "track well" at this speed. I have to work harder to drive this than my wife's Suburban.
Neither one of these problems is "severe", but aggravating and worrisome. The vehicle has about 2000 miles on it. I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow and my fear is all he will do is the balance the tires (and maybe that will do it), but I am afraid the "tracking" issue may be more involved. It almost seems like there is a slight amount of play in the steering wheel.
I have Avalon 2006 Limited. The right side of the steering wheel is not working all the time and this is for all the buttons...

Vibration in steering started in January soon after full brake job, new rotors, etc. on my 05AvyXLS. Pronounced between 60 and 70 mph where steering wheel shakes in my hands. Had tires balanced and rotated 3 or 4 times, alignment, checked tires/treadwear, in 3 diff stores (incl dealer)...same problem. Just bought new set of tires today, thought prob would go away since all pros thought was a tire prob...negative. Same prob, only even more pronounced!
I'm thinking I have a tie rod, wheel bearing, strut/shock, or some kinda suspension prob? I've spent considerable dough with exactly the same prob. And could there have been something related to the brake/rotor job? My pro says no, unless there is vibration when I brake, which there is not! Vibration occurs b/t 60 and 70, whether I'm in the gas or not, and does not happen when braking! What can this be??
I have a 2005 Toyota Avalon. When you turn the wheel it will make about 1 1/2 turns to the right and then locks, but when you turn left it will turn almost 2 1/2 full turns, if you move you will hear what I believe is the tire rubbing, haven't done it since I first noticed this problem. What could be causing this?
The alignment and everything seems fine on the car and there is no other issues with the steering. Just that the wheel turns too far to the left.
2005 Avalon LTD. The leather on the steering wheel and shift knob are discolored and deteriorating. It is flaking off and getting sticky. Is this something that can be re-wrapped at an upholstery shop or elsewhere?
View 3 RepliesMy steering wheel on my 2012 Avalon Limited began shaking above 65 mph immediately after the tires were rotated for the first time. The balance was checked, and two new tires were installed. That did not fix the problem. The car also seems to pull to the right. Wondering if the problem are the tires, or an alignment issue.
View 1 RepliesFor as long as I remember (40000+ KM), I've noticed that my steering wheel vibrates when stopped with the brakes and in D. ie, while stopped at a red light. It immediately goes away when I lift off the brake or put the car into neutral.
The vibration isn't crazy. I can only feel it through the steering wheel or touching around it. However, it is certainly very noticeable and also audible.
Have this vibration through the steering wheel? (Avalon V6) I'm hoping this isn't a defect in the car...
My brakes were terrible and finally got roders and pads for front yesterday ... well the pad on passenger side was like not there anymore almost metal on metal and driver side was not close to being that bad but like driving down road there was a slight hi pitch tick that only occured when steering wheel was slightly tilted left (counter clockwise).
We redid front pads and roders (did bad not to long ago) and now there a terrible rubbing sound and it only occurs when again wheel tilted left or making a left hand turn cant figure it out thought it was the wire clip to hold caliper in place but that's clearing rim .... it sounds like metal on metal and driving me nut was driving last night and after awhile it did go away but i have feeling it going to happen again when i drive it today ...
When I start my car the tilt wheel motor when going to its position is little louder sound can relate to your side folding mirrors. it's pretty quiet once it's started. my ls430 is dead quiet always so was my lx470'
View 1 RepliesMy car has a little bit of a shimmy between 65 and 80, can feel it more when changing lanes slowly, after 80 slows down to almost nothing and by 100 is gone. Road force and high speed balanced, new set of tires (Mich. PS2) still does it. One more detail, the steering wheels is slightly tilted to the left when driving straight, anything to do with this? I'm suspecting the rotors too, but I only have 3,400 miles on my car.
View 8 RepliesI have a 2008 Avalon with 111,000 miles on it. I was messing around under the hood and noticed the power steering fluid looked very dark. I bought a turkey baster and a quart of power steering fluid and did maybe 4 exchanges. During this process I finally paid close attention to what it said on the power steering reservoir "Use Dextron II or III ATF fluid." So, I started exchanging the power steering fluid with the ATF.
View 14 Repliestook the car in today for an oil change (06 xls) apparently I got a small leak coming right from the power steering pump.
Apparently that is what he is telling me - could it be from the high pressure return hose? Is it better to get the unit rebuilt or buy a new pump? (I am going to try that lucas power steering fix in the interim), is there a recall or goodwill warranty on this?
What is the life expectancy of the PS pump? car and 255K (08 Touring) it is beginning to leak very slightly....
View 4 RepliesI bought a 2011 Avalon at the end of last year and it just turned 20K. When I'm going at least 50 mph and straight it will randomly have an uncertain steering feeling like it wants to wander left or right. It reminds me of being in a strong wind or when you're traveling on those certain parts of the freeway that have those little lines parallel to the lane markings.
The latter is just the tires and normal for the tread. (My 2002 had the same thing when going over the lined section of the freeway and went away when I changed the tires). However, this is happening on normal freeway without those lines. It will happen for awhile and then just go away for awhile. I've had the car aligned and the tires rotated and it didn't change anything.
I guess one of the hoses dried out and the fluid is leaking.
Called the dealer to buy a new one but guess what.. They don't sell that hose separate. Only the assembly with the metal line and the price for the whole thing is over $90 + tax .
Red arrow shows the hose that I need and the part number for what dealer sells is 44406
I cleaned everything today and put an extra clamp where the hose is connected to the PS reservoir. Will see if it's going to work for now.
My question is where can I get a piece of hose which will be compatible with PS fluid so I can replace this? Also what is the ID of that hose?
I've been having this ongoing clunk in the front of my 06 Avalon for about a month now. When I slightly hit the brake i'm getting almost a metal on metal clunk sound from right in front of the drivers side wheel area, or possibly on the other side wheel well area, and not sure if its related but a popping noise when i turn my wheel a certain way it seems.
Replaced:
Both CV axles
Both Rotors
Both transmission mount and engine mount (left and right side)
Dog Bone torque bar on top
Drivers side caliper
Control arms
Struts were replaced 6 months ago, and reused old mounts, so I took it out and replaced the strut mount with the bearing on passenger side only.
Control arms have been replaced 4 or 5 times in 6 months because they keep cracking, they are being installed correctly and still having the issue, they're slightly cracked right now (many tiny little rips in the rubber rear bushing of the front control arms) perhaps this is the problem and they're flexing too far? They're Dorman and ordered off of amazon. I have 2 replacement ones arriving tomorrow and will throw them in.
124k miles. I have had multiple shops look at it and cant figure it out, they said everything is tight. One shop said it was internal transmission.
I've been having a lot of noise coming from the front left tire, and I finally had it diagnosed as a bad wheel bearing today.
I noticed that the front wheel bearings are sold individually while the rear wheel bearings are sold as hub assemblies. Is there a certain way that the front wheel bearings have to be removed and pressed on? I'm trying to see if this is a DIY repair.
I am new to Toyota Nation but have been a member for a while on Club Lexus. I have a 2005 Camry LE with an oscillating steering wheel from 20-60 mph. I've just had all four brakes and rotors replaced, tires are about 15,000 miles/1 year old, struts were replaced two years ago at 125,000. I'm guessing it needs a tire balance.

Having issues with a stinky steering wheel? sometimes, i notice a unpleasant smell from it, especially when the car has been in the sun. when it's cold enough, it doesn't seem to smell at all. i know this is due to buildup of oils and whatnot from my hands.
I occasionally clean the wheel with baby wipes. that just minimizes the smell. And yes, I do wash my hands several times a day. I don't think i have particularly sweaty palms. I drive and '05 with no accessories on the steering wheel.
I have an '05 Honda Odyssey, that has a wobble in the steering wheel, when I am going more than 60 mph. It has 87K miles on it. Tires seem smooth. Below 40mph it is not there or un-noticable. There is no pulling left or right, it does not seem to get worse if I go from 60 to 80.
