So finally my wife traded in her vw for a Toyota. We found a 06 Avalon limited with only 68k. It's loaded to the gills with options and we have found only one thing that doesn't work, the back glass power sliding shade. Possibly coincidentally possibly not we have an annoying rattle from the rear when we go over bumps. Is the rattle coming from the non working shade? How do I fix it?

View 1 RepliesOver the last 6 months I've developed a rattle in the rear (possibly right side) that has become louder over time. During the summer months I crawled underneath to see if anything was loose but nothing obvious. Since it's winter now with several inches of snow I don't have any desire to go underneath again.
I'll assume it's not safety related but I did check the exhaust and or any shield and all seems tight.
The back seat of my B6 rattles (more like a buzzing noise) when going over bumps. It makes that noise over bumps even if the seat is folded down.
View 5 RepliesOK, so I have a 2009 Elantra and have noticed that in the last 2 weeks, there is a severe rattle/clunk when I hit bumps that sounds like it is coming from the back right tire. At times it also sounds like it is coming from the seats. I just can't tell. It has been to 3 different dealers. One said they heard it and suggested it was a loose spoiler....tightened and no change. The dealer I bought it from claims they hear nothing (it is SO noisy!). I went to a dealer today who drove with me and said it may be a defect with struts, etc. They definitely heard it.
So I ask new Elantra owners..could it just be that the Elantra is noisy over bumps? Sounds like my shocks are gone. Super loud when going over bumps. My car is only 6 months old.
My 2011 base has a front end creak over bumps/dips in driveways/roadway. Audible at low speed. Started around 3K [advised dealer and got it into computer] now at 18K more frequent and pronounced. Annoying and slightly embarrassing - had Hyundai-owning friends in car yesterday - their Santa Fe is very quiet.
View 14 RepliesI changed the oil and filter in my new to me 2010 Avalon with Mobil One 5W-30 and OEM Toyota oil filter.
Prior to oil change was M1 5w-30 oil with a Service Champ oil filter.
Prior to oil change the oil light went off almost Instantly and there with almost no start up rattle.
After oil change the light oil light goes off much slower...say 2-3 seconds and there is engine rattle for approx. 2 - 3 seconds.
2001 chev s-10 pick up with 3rd door.driver's side door[s] rattle over bumps and whatnot, the doors seem to work perfect and hinges are tight,the door alignment is good, and its not a door panel or loose item...its the door[s].
View 6 RepliesI have a 2005 Limited and whenever I roll any of the windows down it does a quick rattle vibration like its trying to pull away from something that's sticking then it continues to roll. It would be 1 thing of it was just 1 window however its all 4 windows. I thought originally thought maybe some of the rubber molding I seen on the windows, (maybe from the days it was hot over the course of years) were the reason and wiped all the black stuff off the windows with goop. Didn't work. I didn't realize how bad it was until I moved my old 2001 Avalon I'm selling and they rolled down so smooth..
View 7 RepliesMinor rattle when going over bumps! It sounds like drivers side rear... I have had a chance to check of anything in the car was loose (spare tire tools etc...). Found my problem, now I just have to confirm its the rear driver seat belt not resting correctly.
1. Intermittent rattle behind driver
-check rear seat belts that they are actually resting on the cushion loop.
-check rear passenger window switch.
-check door strikers
2. Bass rattle front doors
-check with dealer
3. Rattle at rear of car
-check spare wheel and tool compartment.
My 2012 Avalon developed a slight rattle at 9000 miles that continued to get worse. I took off the right front wheel today and found the top caliper bolt partially loosened. I could turn it with my FINGERS! The other one was tight as were the ones on the left side.
To diagnose this rattle, find a bumpy road that makes it rattle. Put your foot lightly on the brake (to load the caliper). If the noise goes away, it is probably a loose caliper bolt.
It's a metal on metal rattle sound when I'm going slower speeds and paved residential streets that are a little rough. passenger front is where it seems to be coming from. I can almost know when it's going to do it when I'm coming up on a rough spot on the road. super frustrating. Started noticing if after my mechanic replaced both front springs when my driver side spring broke. Took it back to him and he couldn't hear it and made sure everything was tight. What it could be. Thought maybe stabalizer link but not sure how to tell if it's bad.
View 1 RepliesI use the rear sunshade in the summer months, but not all the time - just here and there.
There has never been a child, or anyone in the backseat who has ever messed with the rear shade, it either goes up or down, and has never been messed with.
Today I went to put the shade up, and all I heard was a click from the back area where the shade is. I tired it several times, but all I heard was a little click, and the shade did not go up.
I put the car in reverse (which causes the shade to go down when its up), I put the car in drive, then returned the car to park. I hit the button again, this time the shade came up.
Once the shade was all the way up, I waited a minute and pressed the button again. The shade arms started to fold down, then stopped. The shade will not go back down. I put the car in reverse, and it attempts to bring down the shade, but it wil not go down.
My thinking is, its not the switch (because the signal is getting to the shade mechanism, I can hear a click back there, even if it doesn't go up or down).
I'm thinking it's not the motor, because it "did" go up, it just won't go back down. Although, it could be that the motor is weak, and not enough power to lift, or lower the shade?
Having issues with passenger side door making noise on the highway at higher speeds or over bumps? I've recently begun to notice a slight rattle coming from the passenger side door when at highway speeds which becomes more noticeable and annoying when driving over a bump or less smooth roadways. I just reached 1500 miles. I have looked around on the forum and found some issues that various GTI owners experienced most dated from last year (talked with a MK6 GTI owner today at work who mentioned there was a recall not too long ago on this issue?), but I feel like that would have been since fixed with the R if the recall was last year.
View 9 RepliesMy car has been doing that on and off for a while. Sometimes it can go without that annoying squeak for a month or so, then come back and disappear again. There is nothing like it would only do that on high/low rpms or when the AC is turned on for example. The noise just comes whenever it wants to. Today I had a chance to capture it.

I was trying to listen to the bearings with mechanic's stethoscope and it seems that the tensioner is the loudest one. But if that bearing was bad it would make the noise all the time..
I have a 2007 ES 350, the driver's door doesn't seem to be a snug as it ought to be. Hitting even small bumps seems to cause a jarring of the door. How to snug it up?

View 15 RepliesI have a klunk/rattle in the drivers side front end when I go over a small bump at a slow speed. The dealer said it was the struts - they repleced them along with the upper support thing. Noise still there, next they said it was a worn motor mount - noise still there
View 1 RepliesThe car is a 2004 Suzuki Aerio with 68k miles on it. I've owned the car since 25k miles, and performed all maintenance on time. The car was also maintained well before we owned it (receipts). I've taken it to our garage 5 times now, for the same noise. Here is the timeline of events:
1) Two months ago started making two noises (rattle over bumps and a faint clunk on driver's side when turning). Garage replaced control arm assembly on both sides.
2) Took it back a week later because it was still making clunk (It got worse over this week, and then stayed at this level. I can feel it under the driver's side floor board. Sounds like a clunk/cracking noise) and was making a new rattle. Garage said their air wrench was messing up the first day and a heat shield came loose.
3) Another week later, still making clunk and making yet another weird rattle/grinding noise over bumps. Garage said this time that it's another loose bolt on the control arm assembly. Tightened and double checked everything. They seemed apologetic and embarrassed about the loose bolts.
4) Another two weeks later, still making the clunking noise. I take it back and take our mechanic for a ride. He hears it. I call back later that day and they say they can't find anything wrong with it (checked struts, front suspension, and cv joint). I speak with a different mechanic and he tells me "we don't do any fancy hard turning when we take the cars for test drives. We drive them like most people with old cars drive them." This seems to infer, to me, that it's only making this noise because I drive my car hard. Fyi, I drive reasonably. They say they had my mechanic, the other mechanic, the shop owner (who was on vacation that week), and ANOTHER mechanic from a different garage looking at it, and they can't find what's wrong. Bring it back next week.
5) Yesterday, they say they looked everything over and couldn't find anything wrong. Said they would have to diagnose it by feel. I have to work, but my husband picks it up and says they said it's play in the drive shaft causing this noise, and that they didn't seem worried about it. I only paid for the first visit.
Does this sound reasonable? Should I take it somewhere else for a second opinion? It does it on turns weather I'm on the gas or not. I like this car and I'm hoping to keep it for at least a few more years.
The sunshade will go up when you push button but will not go back down when put in reverse or pushing the button. The control arms move about 2-3 inches and stops.
