I've been having a lot of noise coming from the front left tire, and I finally had it diagnosed as a bad wheel bearing today.
I noticed that the front wheel bearings are sold individually while the rear wheel bearings are sold as hub assemblies. Is there a certain way that the front wheel bearings have to be removed and pressed on? I'm trying to see if this is a DIY repair.
I gotta a roaring noise coming from my right front while turning. Planning on replacing just the wheel bearings tomorrow & not the whole hub assembly(2008 2wd). Is there a thread that lays out the steps and other parts I may need? I've seen alot different stories on the net on how to do it. Everthing from I can press new bearings to I have to do 4x4 hub conversion. Seems to be some confusion.

View 14 RepliesI have a 2002 Nissan Xterra SE (Silver). I have just a couple miles over 200K on her too! recently, I have had a chirping noise coming from the front left tire. It chirps upon rotating, as well as when i turn the wheel to the left. I only hear the chirp at slower speeds. Also, the breaks have been starting to screech, not a lot, but occasionally. Do I have bad ball bearings? Need new brakes? Both? Or is there a chance a rock is stuck up in there? The chirp goes away when it's wet outside, like after a rain!

I've had a worsening growl in the front end that sounds like it's coming from the front left wheel. I can feel it in the steering wheel, and the sound goes away when I turn the wheel right of center. Center (going straight) or leftward steering, and the noise comes right back.
I changed the wheel bearing today, and there is absolutely no change in symptoms. Turning the CV shaft back and forth by hand, something feels kind of "grindy." It is the same at any point along the shaft, which has me worried that the bad bearing is in the front differential.
This a 3.3L engine although the noise has nothing to do with the engine but front left near tire assembly, what can it be?
View 6 RepliesMy 2005 Prius has 95k miles on it. I've been hearing a cluck-cluck-cluck noise from near the front driver side wheel. I had an independent mechanic test drive it, who said the wheel bearing needs replacement. Should I have it checked out by a Toyota dealer? They're so much more expensive, but are is it worth taking it to them?
View 15 RepliesI have some whine coming from my front wheel bearings so I'm going to replace them both. I'm not sure if this had been done on my truck before, but I'm thinking so since I have Moog greaseable ball joints.
Truck has 250k miles on it. I'm going to check the pads, rotors and slide pins. Anything else that might need work? I'm sure the half shaft could use a once over, but I don't keep my hubs locked so they don't turn much in regular driving.
I have a mystery noise coming from the left front wheel.
I have a 2002 Toyota Camry, 4 cylinder, SE Model, 150,000 miles
It sounds like metal on metal. It only happens at low speeds (less than 20mph). Only happens when I turn the steering wheel right. While I am driving straight, the noise is not there.
Here is what I have changed on my car in the last 3 months:
-New Brake rotors
-New Brake Pads
-New sway bar link
-New sway bar bushing
-New outer tie rod end
-New lower ball joint
More Observations:
-CV joint is not leaking
-Checked the struts for proper movement
-The strut seems properly seated in the bearing plated, nothing broken (under the hood)
-I confirmed that the disc brake shield is not in contact with anything
Am I missing anything? What else could be causing this?
I just put on some new wheels and tires (19" VMR RS4 reps) and there is a weird clanking noise coming from the front left wheel when I am going around 10 mph. It doesn't happen when I'm moving faster, but I have checked it out and don't see anything rubbing or hitting any metal pieces. Could it be the suspension or something else? I haven't heard it around any of the other wheels.

View 1 RepliesOur 2011 w/140,000 miles has a variable front end noise that I suspect from past experience with other vehicles is a bad wheel bearing. I've seen posts of the procedure for replacing the Gen 2 bearings that requires the hub and bearing be pressed out and new bearing back in which would limit the DIY'er, but looking at the replacement parts diagram for the Gen 3, it appears that the hub and bearing unit is bolted in with 4 bolts and may not need a hydraulic press to install.
View 4 RepliesOk at 40 mph and above I have a loud humming noise coming from my left front wheel. I replaced my rotor and pads due to normal wear. I also replaced the bearing. No fix. Tires were rotated a month ago. Could it be my CV joint? The boots are fine.
View 3 Replies2011 Hyundai Elantra, 42k miles. The car is my girlfriends which I drive once every few weeks. Yesterday I noticed a rumbling noise coming from the right front tire area. The noise only comes about when turning a fairly sharp left while above 20 mph. Taking a left onto a side street etc doesn't cause any noise, but taking one while going through a big intersection etc. Where the speed is up a little bit causes the noise. The tires are original, obviously not new, but they still have a decent amount of tread left on them, they're Continental Pro Contacts.
Tire, ball-joint, brake pad rubbings? I'm going to take it to get looked at tomorrow, I did spray the area with a hose in case there was something caught in there, but that didn't change anything. The tire looks fine, no abnormal wear or bulges, the car is in alignment and makes no other noise except in the circumstance noted.
So whenever I brake while reversing (and rarely while moving forwards) I hear this odd grinding noise coming from the front left wheel and can feel it through the brake. Im not a petrol head but I decided to replace a wheel bearing hub myself recently to save money. I am pretty sure I reconnected the anti lock brakes correctly though I doubt it's that. My brakes are good.

Here's the kicker: It only happens when I turn LEFT!!!! I checked and there is nothing obvious that sticks out to touch the tire when it turns...

View 2 RepliesOver the past few months I'd noticed an intermittent grinding noise coming from my left front wheel at low speeds. I took it in once but it refused to play along so I finally managed to catch it on camera and let the dealership listen to it. They booked me for today, saying it sounded like a wheel bearing (to which I agreed) and I dropped her off around ten, not expecting it to cooperate for the second time.
I got a call from the dealer around 2 PM saying that they were able to duplicate the noise and that when they took the left front wheel off and ran the car on the lift with the rest of the wheels off the ground, the noise went away. Even stranger still, when they put the wheel on the tire balancing machine and spun it, gronch, gronch...gronch, gronch....gronch, gronch. It was coming from inside the wheel! I gave them permission to dismount the tire from the wheel and about ten minutes later I got another call saying they'd found a handful of tiny hard rubber balls inside the mounted wheel/tire assembly that were rolling down the inside of the wheel and causing the grumbling at low speed.
Here's the kicker: they were in all four wheels! The tech even saved them for me so I could take a look and they don't look like anything mass-produced; some are larger than others, some are round and some are oval-shaped but when I dropped one on the glass advisor desk, it made a very clear 'Clink!'.
