On my 09 avalon I always fill up the tank with premium gas. Got 225 miles out of it and the gas light came on. Went to fill up again and it only took 15 gallons. I googled it and our tanks are 18.5. Is my light coming on to early? Is there still 3 gallons left in the car when the light comes on?
View 1 RepliesMy car just turned 85k miles. The day it turned 85k, I recieved a message from dealer saying their records indicate car is due for 85k service. Coincidence? Note: I do not have my service done at the local toyota shop. They have not seen car since last warranty work probably 2+ years ago.
Also at about this same time, the service engine light came on, (oil change needed). Since I only use mobil 1 in the car with genuine Toyota filters, I am not to concerned if the car gets another 500 miles on it while scheduling a service. However, this time, returning from a short trip on Sunday, the VSR (traction control) and the check engine light came on. Only Code is p0015 left bank. Monday, warning lights are gone, and oil change is scheduled for Wednesday.
Is the VSR and the P0015 related.
How many gallons do you have left when your light goes on? My car is a lil off topic I have a 2013 Rio but notice that the gas light came on and I still had 4 gallons left........

View 14 RepliesWhen I purchased the 09 XLS last year the seller told me the trunk/cargo light didn't work and I assumed it was a bulb. The bulb could have come in handy several times so I attempted a repair. I removed the bulb and it seemed to be ok, but I decided to replace it will a new 2825 and it also didn't work. I'll assume there is no dedicated fuse specifically for the trunk/cargo light so I guess there must be a break in the line.
Is this common for the Avalon in our generation? It's too cold to diagnose so I'll have to wait for warmer weather unless it's an easy repair.
I have noticed if I turn on the AC and set it to any front defrost setting (either full front defrost or mix front defrost and lower vents) and turn up the heat that when I turn it on the next day there is a horrible smell. If I run the AC and turn the temperature up there is no smell so long as I don't use any setting using the front defrost. The smell is bad enough that I have to open the windows to air out the car. After a few minutes the smell goes away.
The car is an '06 XL. I noticed it intermittently when I first got it two years ago, but this winter the smell happens every time I use the AC on any front defrost mode. My guess is the heating element under the front windshield. If I turn on the heat without the AC on any front defrost setting I do not have the problem.
I recently got new Michelin Primacy MXV4 tires mounted on new OEM Toyota rims and am noticing my 2012 Avalon pulls slightly to the left. This car is the first front wheel drive car I have ever owned & am wondering if this is somewhat normal. It did not seem to do this when I had the old tires(Michelin Energy MXV4) tires with the original rims. It is not THAT bad but I DO notice it. My current mileage is 36k.
View 14 RepliesOn my 2012 Avalon, moving shifter to the left of "D" for manual mode causes a downshift to 4th gear. Is it supposed to do this? For me, this would be poor design in that I may be setting up to pass, but not quite ready to downshift to 5th yet. And even going 60mph it still gets 4th... Or I may be going to climb a mountain (as I was going to Colorado last week) and only need 5th, not 4th. So I have to upshift to 5th AFTER I move to manual mode..

When you turn the wheel it will make about 1 1/2 turns to the right and then locks, but when you turn left it will turn almost 2 1/2 full turns, if you move you will hear what I believe is the tire rubbing, haven't done it since I first noticed this problem. What could be causing this?
The alignment and everything seems fine on the car and there is no other issues with the steering. Just that the wheel turns too far to the left.
So I have ran into the problem of the left headlight flickering. It went completely off today.
View 4 RepliesFrom all I can see, the fuel tank capacity on my '12 should be 17.5 gallons.
As I finish up a trip with it, I know I've "pushed the envelope" as far as fuel range is according to the guage/computer. I get the warning that I need to refuel and that I have 50 miles to empty, but I've driven 40 miles into that last range before refueling, and only been able to put 14 or so gallons into the tank.
My question is: If I were to drive until it literally runs out of gas, then fill it, would the guage/computer recalibrate or do I need to install a new fuel sensor?
I get the warning as the guage indicates just under 1/4 tank remaining, and I have yet to run it until the guage indicates that it's actually on empty (family and dog are with me so risking it is currently out). I'm hoping that the guage itself knows what the real deal is and that the computer is just not with it.... OH, FWIW full is EXACTLY on the "full" line and not over as in my Kia.

Today when I rotated all five Turanza tires (RF > SP, RR > RF, SP > RR, swap L, as per the manual), I noticed the left tires (only) have exaggerated outer edge wear. All three from the right have even wear.
Wifey says it's because I weigh 400 lbs (181kg) and am generally driving alone. When I'm not alone, my passengers are all normal weight. This would be the first time in my life my weight cause uneven wear to tires.
By the way, these tires are LOUD on certain road surfaces.
Have a 2007 Avalon, original owner. For past 3 winters, when temp is 10F or less, there is a loud clicking sound when the car turns left from a stop. The frequency of the clicking sound increases as the car accelerates. Once the car makes the turn, the sound stops. In extremely cold weather (0F or less) the noise happens when turning right, but less intense. The clicking usually goes away after driving several miles and will return after sitting outside overnight or for 4 or 5 hours if the temp is below 10F. Dealer claims all of the CV joints are good. I drove it with a tech this morning and it was clearly present.
View 6 RepliesI know that if the shifter/transmission is set to "S" then it tends to use the engine as a braking system sort of like a manual transmission. My problem is that it does this while in "D" (drive) for about 5 seconds and then it back to normal as in it's like it's put back into neutral. I read the manual and it states that when you place it in "S" mode and then back to "D" mode it retains some of the "S" features such as engine braking, but in our 09 Avalon XLS, it does this all the time while in "D".
Question: Is this normal for engine braking for about 5 seconds while in drive mode?
If so is there any way to get it back to a normal automatic drive mode where as when you release the gas pedal it coasts without engine braking?
Where can I get body side moldings for an 09 Avalon.
The door sides are quite exposed to door dings...
I have a 2009 Avalon XLS with about 60,000 miles. While my wife was driving home from work today the following happened:
AC compressor off (blows hot air), temp gauge not operating, abs light on, brake light on, avg. mileage and distance to empty display displays blanks, shift indicator on dash not lighting.
Rest of dash works fine, audio works, lights work, car runs fine.
I tried finding a common fuse, but really don't know what to look for.
We just purchased seemingly well cared for 2009 Avalon XLS. Navigation system is showing a DVD error (unable to read). First we thought it was missing the DVD then we discovered the DVD port in the truck and through some trial and error got the DVD (#U52) out. We are proceeding with the logic that the DVD is bad.

View 4 RepliesI'm posting for my Dad who recently bought a black 2009 Avalon XLS. He loves the car but there's one annoying glitch: if the car sits too long in the sun, the driver's side door cannot be opened with either the FOB or even by inserting the key in the door. He then has to go around to the passenger side, and either climb over the centre console or reach over and manually unlock the door. What surprises me is that he can't even mechanically unlock the door with the key.
I've spent a lot of time research this, but I've been surprised at how little I've found. Eventually I came across similar complaints with black Toyota or Lexus door locks failing in the heat, but nothing for the 3G Avalon and "heat failures". To confirm, this problem only arises when the car is parked in the sun on a warm day.
