I have a 2008 with a tapping sound from engine - Sounds kinda like a diesel engine when cold. Not real loud.
It stops once the engine is warmed up. Is that most likely a tappet?
88,000 miles... I bought it two months ago with an extended warranty.
We have a 2005 Avalon that was leaking oil from the oil pan about 8 months ago. Took it into a local shop and they pulled the engine and repaired the leak; everything seemed normal. Fast forward to a couple of months ago and the engine started developing a tapping sound from the valve cover. Over the span of 2 months, the tapping had become significantly more pronounced. It went from barely audible to HOLY $#!% we can hear it from inside the cabin at freeway speeds.
We finally took it to the dealer and the problem was so much worse than we were expecting. They only pulled the front valve cover, but two of the hydraulic lifters had a ton of play in it and there were very large flakes of metal in the oil. They also found whopping amounts of RTV along the seam where the timing chain cover attaches. And it was a ton! You could see goops of orange stuff all over the inside of the timing chain cover seam. While Toyota wasn't able to find the exact cause, the working (and very likely) theory is that the excess RTV broke off and blocked some of the oil ports (and possibly did damage to the pump), thereby starving the engine of oil and causing excessive metal on metal wear.
Have a 2007 Avalon, original owner. For past 3 winters, when temp is 10F or less, there is a loud clicking sound when the car turns left from a stop. The frequency of the clicking sound increases as the car accelerates. Once the car makes the turn, the sound stops. In extremely cold weather (0F or less) the noise happens when turning right, but less intense. The clicking usually goes away after driving several miles and will return after sitting outside overnight or for 4 or 5 hours if the temp is below 10F. Dealer claims all of the CV joints are good. I drove it with a tech this morning and it was clearly present.

View 14 RepliesI have totally insulated my 2013 Avalon XLE with the sound deadening materials. Now, I can hardly hear or feel any engine noise or vibration at any speed unless I really accelerate the engine hard. I have also insulated my wife's 2012 Camry LE but I have not been able to eliminate the typical 4 cylinder engine buzzing sound and vibration intruding into the cabin. I am wondering if the Avalon Hybrid does the same once the 4 cylinder engine kicks in even though it is better insulated than the Camry.
View 1 RepliesI have the annoying "clicking noise" with my certified used 2008 Avalon XLS. It only occurs after the car has been sleeping overnight or after five hours or so of not the running. So this is normal according to two dealers and that I need to watch it but it isn't an issue- normal. Still, it does not leave me feeling good about it. The car has 56k miles and it is smooth, quiet and responsive, just that "ticking". It does go away after 15 minutes or so of driving. They told me why it's happening and I found some answers here, on the forum.
My question is- will it get worse? Will Toyota only address it when the "ticking" gets loud and does not go away and I'm pushing smoke from the tail pipes?
I've been reading up on the LSC 90K recall with the defective VVT-i oil line. How can I find out if my Avalon has had the oil line replaced? Just a bit confused about if any records should exist for this and where I can find out.
Just purchased a used 2008 Avalon from my uncle. The car hasn't been driven much the past few years. I'm driving across country right now from Chicago to Seattle. We are about half way through the trip and I notice that the engine has what appears to be water dripping out near the center of it. I have checked the fluid levels and everything appears to be normal. The coolient is full. I have read that it could be the AC dripping water, however, it is a relatively cool day 45 degrees F at the moment and we just had the heat on in the car. Is this something I should be concerned about?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2010 Accent. My Accent has a tapping sound when the engine is cold. I have read on this site that others have had this problems and it was the chain tensioner. I was wondering if this was something Hyundia would fix for free or how much it cost to get this fixed. Is there a recall for this problem? There appears to be a problem with a chain tensioner on the 2010 model of Accent.
View 26 RepliesSo my 2014 Elantra makes a tapping/ticking sound on cold starts which stays audible after the oil gets up to temp for at least until about 10 minutes of driving. I've heard this noise since I bought the car and of course kept searching all over the forums but everyone seems to have a different opinion as to what causes it and if it's normal or not. I finally decided to drop my car off at the dealer overnight so they could start in the morning and diagnose it. They listened, ran some tests on the engine and said everything was fine, nothing was damaged and that the sound is from the second fuel pump that is located over the engine.
They tested my fuel and said it's making the sound because I'm using a heavy fuel quality, then the tech told me I should run a fuel cleaner every other time I fill the car up. This seems excessive to me? I only fill my car up with Shell gas and avoid discount places which the tech agreed that Shell gas should be fine. I only have 22k miles on the car do I really need to be running cleaners every other tank of gas? Also wondering if using non ethanol gas would fix this problem. I did run 1 tank of non-ethanol but didn't notice a difference and since non-ethanol costs more than premium I went back to regular. I will try a fuel cleaner though?
I have a loud tapping noise in my 07 5.4 triton. when its really cold on the first start up I cant here the noise but when it gets warm its tap tap tap again.
View 4 RepliesMy car is 2007 Avalon(Limited). I have a problem with my A/C.
When I go out from work (at outside temperature of 95 F to 100 F ) I turn the A/C ON, it blows a nice cold air. and then when I stop at the traffic light for 4 minutes or so, the A/C start blowing a hot air(or air without any cooling). then I a had to pull over and turn it OFF and then turn it ON again. so it will become cold again. sometimes it continue blowing a nice cold air, and sometimes it just stop cooling and blowing a hot air for a while and then become cold again. the hot air its like its without the A/C sign turned green but its actually ON.(it happened everyday for a month now)
In the morning(7 am, 80 F), I switch the A/C on and move on to work, it took me around 50 min by car from my house to work. but after around 40 min it became hot again.(not everyday)
Note: Before this problem by 4 months, the ac in the driver side was hot and the passenger side was cold. and I add some refrigerant(Freon) in it and it become OK again.
I recently purchased a 2008 Camry 4cyl with 50k miles on it, the car runs great however on colder mornings (near or below freezing) there seems to be a ticking sound coming from the engine bay. The noise matches engine rpm, it will disappear once the car has reached operating temps.
Ive poked around the forum a bit for "camry ticking or clicking when cold" and have found a few threads saying their toyota dealership told them it was normal and that even new camrys do the same noise when cold.
My engine in my 2002 Santa Fe 2.7 v6 has been making a ticking sound that was especially pronounced when cold starting. It would quiet down somewhat when warmed up but still a slight ticking would be there. I thought it was the hydraulic lash adjusters. I know Hyundai's service site sates that a ticking can be heard if the factory filter is not used. I tried using the factory oil filter which did not make a difference. The car had about 85,000 miles on it and I always maintained it well as well as keeping up with oil changes. I took it to the dealer to have a repair performed related to corrosion of the rear trailing arms and had the tech check the engine noise.
It was determined that the cam chains have developed slack and were slapping on the cam chain guides which prevent the cam chains from popping off in case of slack developing which was the case here. The chain guides are made of some type of plastic material and according to the tech showed significant wear. This was all covered under the powertrain warranty. For those that are not under warranty any longer and are capable of doing their own repairs this is the list of parts that was ordered by the dealer. The parts in red are the culprits. The rest are gaskets and seals. I don't think this is an easy job.
Last month I changed the oil and filter in my 1992 Buick Century with 264000 miles. I used a name brand (Citco) of the correct oil, 10W-30, API Service SN. I bought the oil on sale at a local supermarket. Now, I hear a loud tapping sound from the engine, especially when it's cold. It dosen't sound as loud after warm-up. The tapping increases in frequency when I rev up the engine. I don't intend to keep this old car much longer, but is this problem an immediate concern? Could it be a valve problem? Could it Could I have bought some bad oil with a conterfeit label? Other than this noise, the car runs okay.
View 3 RepliesWhen car is cold and leave the house a nasty smell emits from the ventilation system. I have replaced the cabin air filter 2 weeks ago and it seems to smell only when the car is cold. Once warmed up is fine. Is there another filter that I need to replace I just wonder where that old smell comes from.
View 5 RepliesI have this problem for some time already. Most of the time my AC works great - blowing cold air as it should. But sometimes it starts blowing "normal" air instead of cold. To fix that I have to turn OFF and then ON the AC again by pressing the AC button.
View 14 RepliesI purchased the Avalon at the end of the 2012 year. It now has 16,000 miles on it. The car is garaged outside in Massachusetts. On November 10, 2012 (month after purchase) and yesterday, January 28, 2014, the car was brought back to the dealership for a rear suspension clunking noise that happens during cold weather (32 to -10 degrees Fahrenheit). Both times the mechanics say they cannot find anything wrong, nothing is loose with the suspension, and there are no recalls about it.
The best way to describe the noise is when going over potholes in cold weather, I hear a clunk from rear suspension (both left and right side) like something is loose in the trunk (trunk was completely empty yesterday). The sound is not too loud, but audible enough to notice. The rear struts perform well, and the car does not bottom out. As soon as the weather warms up, the noise goes away. It is very really annoying to hear this clunk and the dealership not be able to identify the problem.
I have a 2011 Avalon Limited and live in the Dallas area. Are used the auto setting on my thermostat all the time. I noticed that in cold weather, the AC almost always switches on as part of the thermostat function. I don't understand that. For example, its 30 degrees outside, & I select Auto and set the temperature to 70 degrees, and the green AC light goes on. I want to avoid using more gas than I need to use, so I'm wondering why this might be so. It's a simple matter to simply press the AC and turn it off, but I'm wondering why it goes on in the first place.
View 1 RepliesI have an '05 Camry XLE with the in-dash touch-screen AM/FM CD Nav system. On random cold days I seem to lose my radio reception. When I turn on the radio I receive a lot of static with break-through talking or music. I've tried to change stations using the touch panel, the steering control as well as the manual tuning dial and I still got static.
I've driven to work ~40 minutes and most of them were filled with static and some break-through talking (not of the station I was tuned into though). The last couple of minutes of my drive I did get a station that said it was 98.3 but I was tuned into 95.5. No matter which station I dialed in I still received the 98.3 station.
It seems like the antenna or something in the radio was stuck or frozen. I drove the entire time with the heat blaring on feet/defrost and rear defroster on thinking it might warm something up but that didn't work.
When I turn the car on, the sound to the radio will not work. Occasionally the screen will light up but will have no information on it. Sometimes it will turn on just fine and have all the info. Regardless the sound never comes on. All other functions are working fine like the controls for fans and climate control.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2011 Limited that I take frequently to a local car wash; it is a self serve, brushless system, the only one in this small town. The other day, January 20 to be exact, as soon as I exited the car wash, I noticed that the satellite radio would not play, i.e., there was no sound on any of the SAT stations. I noticed on the video display that the title of the piece and composer (it was Symphony Hall, Channel 76) did display, just no sound. I changed channels with the same result; the display showed what was playing, just no sound.
I shut the radio off and turned it back on with the same result. I then changed from SAT to local FM and was receiving sound. I also tried local AM stations and got sound. When I switched back to SAT, there was still no sound. I drove home with the radio still set to SAT with no sound and turned off the car in the driveway; it was less than 5-10 minutes to home. For the heck of it, I started the car again while still in the driveway, and, voila!, the SAT stations were now giving sound.
What occurred, i.e., why there was no sound on the SAT stations. As said, I have used this same car wash for 2 1/2 years with never a problem of having the SAT stations work correctly after exiting the car wash.
