Avalon 2005-12 :: 2007 - Tansmission Clunks Hard Into Low Gear
Apr 2, 2015
I'm not impressed with our 2007 Toyota Avalon XL with 65K miles that we bought from my parents 2 years ago with less than 40K miles. It's on it's 3rd set of tires, 3rd set of front brakes, it has a left front clunk that nobody can find, we just replaced the 3 rear coil packs and 6 spark plugs and now the transmission is not shifting properly. It is most noticeable when you come to a stop after driving at a moderate RPM.
The transmission clunks hard into low gear. Other times it will not downshift if you are coming down a long hill. I've checked the fluid level and it is good.

We have a 2007 Limited that we love everything about except the way the transmission downshifts to first gear when it seems to me it should stay in second. My inlaws have a 2007 XLS and it doesn't do this. This is our third Avalon and the only one to do this. The dealer we bought from says this is normal but I strongly disagree. Is there a service bulletin on this or what else can be done.

I was driving home from Las Vegas and my avalon just randomly slipped out of gear. I pulled over and put in into park and back into drive and it started to roll backwards the fluid is full and clean.... I bought this car 6 months ago and it barely hit 90xxx miles...

On my 2012 Avalon, moving shifter to the left of "D" for manual mode causes a downshift to 4th gear. Is it supposed to do this? For me, this would be poor design in that I may be setting up to pass, but not quite ready to downshift to 5th yet. And even going 60mph it still gets 4th... Or I may be going to climb a mountain (as I was going to Colorado last week) and only need 5th, not 4th. So I have to upshift to 5th AFTER I move to manual mode..

I have a 2004 Camry 4cyl with and Automatic Transmission. 193,xxx miles. I bought the car with 165,xxx miles. From time to time the transmission would take a little longer than normal to shift from 1-2 or 2-3. It has also had an issue with locking up the torque converter at speeds around 50 MPH which seems to bog the engine some. An adjustment of the foot on the gas pedal fixed both of these problems. (I just let up a little or pressed a little harder)
Well on friday it did something weird. It now clunks very hard when shifting into reverse. Also when in drive it seems to be in 3rd gear. The engine revs very high before the car starts moving but then it seems to run fine once moving and up to road speed.
I have heard that the Transmission may be controlled by its own Computer unit. Is that true? How do I get codes from it?
I have run my scan tool through the OBDII port and get no codes at all.

I had new tires put on, front end alignment done, had to have tires rebalanced and still major shaking between 40 -60 mph. What it could be??

My car is 2007 Avalon(Limited). I have a problem with my A/C.
When I go out from work (at outside temperature of 95 F to 100 F ) I turn the A/C ON, it blows a nice cold air. and then when I stop at the traffic light for 4 minutes or so, the A/C start blowing a hot air(or air without any cooling). then I a had to pull over and turn it OFF and then turn it ON again. so it will become cold again. sometimes it continue blowing a nice cold air, and sometimes it just stop cooling and blowing a hot air for a while and then become cold again. the hot air its like its without the A/C sign turned green but its actually ON.(it happened everyday for a month now)
In the morning(7 am, 80 F), I switch the A/C on and move on to work, it took me around 50 min by car from my house to work. but after around 40 min it became hot again.(not everyday)
Note: Before this problem by 4 months, the ac in the driver side was hot and the passenger side was cold. and I add some refrigerant(Freon) in it and it become OK again.

A/C wont work. The freon is empty no visual scratch or leak found pipe or condenser. I haven't check the evaporator, the latter may be tough to check as it sits inside the dash.

I have a new 2002 Toyota Dbl-Cab SR5 Pre-Runner. I love the truck except every time you come to a stop, the tranny clunks. Also, when you start to move forward again, the tranny clunks again. Ever tow something an when you stop you feel the trailer catching up with you in a clunk? Feels and SOUNDS just like that.
So me being the good customer that I am I called up for a service check. The service dept guy told me that this is normal on all Tacoma DBL cabs, Tundras, Sequias, etc. That is is the two drive shafts separating when I move forward, and pushing together when I come to a stop (esp. a hard stop). They checked it out and also re-aligned the truck since my steering was WAY off and the steering wheel was not even centered.
Now that I have been driving the truck for about 1700 miles, the clunk is getting much worse. This can't be normal! I love the truck but this problem is driving me crazy. Every stop and start I cringe at the expected CLUNK. It shakes the whole truck.

My wife's been complaining off and on about a clunking noise with her '06 Passat 2.0T I couldn't get it to replicate; maybe three complaints on the last 10 months? I wrote it off to the transmission, as it occasionally clunks down into gear on downshift; done this since new, maybe twice per year.
Anyway, she just got the tires rotated last week. And oil change has been at the dealer last six months.
That's why I was shocked when I was changing the front pads tonight. I removed the left wheel, and a fractured sway bar was staring me in the face, end link dangling loose.. The brake was far from fresh...lots of rust and crust on the brake.
I can't see whether it was hit, other than the brake. Everything else looks good. I'm just floored that VW dealer, and especially Discount Tire, didn't catch this during routine work.

I have a 1998 bmw 528i (e39) with 200k on it. It runs and drives like a dream except for one little thing.... when shifting into the next gear at around 25mph, if I let off the gas just before it shifts it clunks as it shifts into the next gear. However, if I accelerate through the gear change it is smooth as can be and has no problems through the gears.
Secondly and I believe unrelated, I am also looking for the location of a transmission temperature sensor... I have heard they tend to fail and can cause issues with shifting until the car is up to running temp. I experienced an issues with it once not wanting to shift out of 1st gear until it warmed but that was before a filter and fluid change. Since that, I haven't any issues, but I want to be prepared just in case with one on hand ready to go in.

How I can update the navigation system on my Avalon? I know I will need a DVD for the update, but I'm unsure of version I can get that will work for my car.

Ok...I've been reading about Michelin tires on the forum and unfortunately, I just bought my 07' Limited with a brand new set of Kelly "Charger" Tires. So, I took a trip last week and noticed at 55-73 mph, the car rides nice, smooth, and quiet. However, when I hit 74 or 75 mph, I began hearing a road noise that sounds as if the tires have hit a certain oscillatory air resonance at this speed.
I'm wondering if it's due to the tire tread pattern or something else. Strangest damn thing. When I accelerate faster, the noise seems to diminish a little but still isn't smooth and quiet. Maybe I'm just drowning it out some while it accelerates. When I bring it back down below 74 mph, it goes nice and quiet again.
I have the tire pressures set at 40 psi (trying to get a little extra fuel mileage). However, I'm wondering if this might cause the problem...I believe the pressure should be between 35-38 psi. My TPMS light hasn't lit up, so I guess it doesn't see fault with an extra 2 psi. Anyway, the tires appear to be a quality tire. I looked they show the following ratings.

I am driving a 2007 Avalon XLS with about 71,000 miles. These lights came on together yesterday. After consulting this forum, I checked the gas cap and found it was indeed loose (or at least had not been engaged with any of the "required" three clicks.) I closed the gas cap tightly and restarted the car. The lights promptly came back on.
I drove to AutoZone where someone pulled the codes: P0306 and P0356. They gave me a printout suggesting the number 6 cylinder was misfiring (P0306) and an ignition coil circuit fault (P0356).

The floor on both the driver side and passenger side has been getting wet. I stuck a small pipe cleaner and didn't find anything. Then I shot some compressed air up there and some water came out. I let the ac for 20 minutes and more water drained out from the drain tube but my carpet was wet again. Is there any way to access the other end of the tube?
Also do I need to take off the cowlings to get under the carpet?

I've had my Avalon at the Toyota shop more than 12 times with the same problem...a/c light on dash flashes off and on. The A/C system shuts down. Sometimes the command center says check A/C.
We have gone through the replace game, compressor twice, relay four times, too much refrigerant-to little refrigerant multiple times and loose wire multiple times.
This is supposed to be a Toyota Certified car if that means anything. The car has 86,000 miles.

My beloved 07 Avalon is in the process of getting totaled because someone (NOT ME) didn't bother to see if there was any oncoming traffic before turning. But I digress.
I'm 99% I'll be replacing it with another 07 Limited, and I have to finish cleaning it out of all my belongings tomorrow. In short, I'm taking everything out of it I can, including my satellite receiver. Looking at the procedures for installing the 06 and 09 (which I could find easily online) it looks like all I need to do is:
- remove the panel on the right inside of the trunk
- remove the receiver unit by unscrewing the 2 10 mm nuts
- unplug the receiver
Is there anything else I should grab while I'm in there? And, how hard is it to remove the panel in the trunk?
