The sunshade will go up when you push button but will not go back down when put in reverse or pushing the button. The control arms move about 2-3 inches and stops.

It's annoying and I have been giving 4 different reasons why it happens none of which is true. So those of you that are having or have had the same problem. I do believe it has something to do with the heat.

View 2 RepliesMy rear window sunscreen only worked intermittently for a while, then quit totally. Suddenly, on it's own, it went up and locked in place and will not retract under any circumstances, i.e. switch inoperable; no effect when moving gear selector from Park to Reverse (should retract). Most annoying is the greatly decreased visibility especially at night as the rear window is also tinted, and it also buzzes loudly for 20 seconds when the vehicle is put into Reverse from Park.One Avalon user suggested to pull the 10A fuse or pay about $700. to repair the sunshade unit.
View 6 RepliesI have an 06 Limited. My rear window takes about 15min to defrost in 40 degree weather. And only about 70% of the window is clear. Im not sure if this is the case with all avalons or just mine as i got it about a month ago. My 02 civic si was defrosting in about 5min. Im having trouble thinking that a civic has a better convenience feature than an avalon.

There has never been a child, or anyone in the backseat who has ever messed with the rear shade, it either goes up or down, and has never been messed with.
Today I went to put the shade up, and all I heard was a click from the back area where the shade is. I tired it several times, but all I heard was a little click, and the shade did not go up.
I put the car in reverse (which causes the shade to go down when its up), I put the car in drive, then returned the car to park. I hit the button again, this time the shade came up.
Once the shade was all the way up, I waited a minute and pressed the button again. The shade arms started to fold down, then stopped. The shade will not go back down. I put the car in reverse, and it attempts to bring down the shade, but it wil not go down.
My thinking is, its not the switch (because the signal is getting to the shade mechanism, I can hear a click back there, even if it doesn't go up or down).
I'm thinking it's not the motor, because it "did" go up, it just won't go back down. Although, it could be that the motor is weak, and not enough power to lift, or lower the shade?
I have a 2005 Avalon Limited. A couple of weeks ago I put the car in reverse and I started hearing this loud buzzing noise coming from the rear window area. I narrow it down to the rear window sunshade. It also makes this noise when pressing the button to lower the shade and maybe sometimes rising it. I know it has something to do with the relay or motor when the signal is sent to it to lower it, because a lower the shade signal is sent when the car is put into reverse or button is pushed. How to find the motor or relay without taking the rear seat out. Right now I would rather just disconnect it to stop the annoying buzzing noise. Where can I find a service/maintence manual to maybe find out how to disconnect it.

The rear window sunshade keep coming up on it own when I start the car.. It will always goes down when I push the button, but It wont go up after I put it down the first time though.
View 1 RepliesI have a 2006 Toyota Avalon XLS that shuts off while driving! No acceleration or power-steering; the car simply stalls. The car only stalls when at low speed such 20mph, stopping for a light, or slowing down to turn.
The car will start right back up or you can put into neutral and restart. I have been dealing with this for a year! I have taken it to my Toyota dealer where I purchased and to no avail. The car throws no codes and no indicator light stays on once the the car is restarted. I have changed electrical wires, replaced battery, disabled remote start (previous owner installed; I purchased car used).
I experienced a misfire code for #4 cylinder on my 2006 Toyota Avalon approx 8,000 miles ago and replaced the three front bank coils with Beck/Arnley coils. I didn't realize they were made in china until they arrived. The car ran fine until today when I got another misfire code for the same cylinder. I still had the two old coils in the garage so I swapped out # 4 and I'm happy to report that solved the problem. My question is should I be concerned that the # 4 cylinder has gone thru two coils in 8,000 miles or chalk it up to cheap chinese crap replacement parts?

View 11 RepliesI have been hearing a rattle from the left side of the car. By accident I found that when the rear left sunshade is extended the rattle goes away. When it is retracted it seems to sit in the door frame perfectly. My 05 Treg has 5000 miles on it and I have had this problem for the last 2000 miles.
View 1 RepliesI've been following CL for quite awhile now. I recently bought a 2006 GS300 and have experienced the stuck rear sunshade issue which I believe is a common issue. Mine gets to go up and down but only halfway up. Tried many things such as spraying lubricants etc but didn't work.
So finally decided to take the rear sunshade assembly apart to see what was wrong. Taking it out was not as difficult as some mentioned. Rear seats, side airbag covers, rear C pillar covers, 3rd brake light and sensor then the back board and finally the sunshade assembly. Got in there in under 30 Mins.
Tried to understand where it got stuck initially by checking the arms Etc but all was good. Eventually decided to open up the motor assembly (black box) and check out the motor and gears. Motor worked fine but one of the large gears had a broken teeth. Tried many fixes but eventually decided to buy the toughest steel epoxy in the market. Glued the broken teeth back and let it sit for 2 days to dry out.
Put all things back in reverse order and it worked like a charm. I only managed to take some pics of the disassembly...
After searching the forums about other owners with the dreaded rear shade buzzing, I am trying to located the fuse to disconnect the rear shade. I will remove the rear seat if I need to but would rather not go through the hassle.
The fuse panel is different than the posts for the 2005/2006 non-limited

View 1 RepliesWe have a 2008 Azera Ltd. with 108,000 miles. Until recently rear sunshade worked perfectly as we used in in auto mode retracting in reverse and going up in forward. No noise during any phase of operation. Not sure when but recently sunshade quit functioning. have tried console button without success but also hear no noise indicating a broken gear as others have reported. Have checked fuse on drivers side fuse panel and it is not blown. From this I can only assume problem is either motor has completely failed or switch is bad. I have laid in the trunk to see if i can access system but covers are all riveted so i thought I'd pull the switch and test it but not sure how to remove it without damaging console
View 6 RepliesI can't adjust my exterior rear view mirrors with the control button. I tried looking up the fuse in the Owner's Manual and didn't see the one it could be? I checked 51 and 55. Which one it is? Or what else the issue could be? (I am not trying to do this while the car is moving)(2006 Avalon Limited)

Currently my sun shade is stuck in the middle position and it is very annoying and also is reducing my visibility in my rear view mirror because the bar is in the middle of my view. I took it to my local dealer and they said just to put it in the lower position would cost $800-1000. Does this seem fair ? I didn't break it, and why should I have to pay for something that is a malfunctioning part. The worst part is my rear view mirror is also turning black in the inside of the mirror also reducing my visibility ?
